Re: the 1927 vs. 1945 configuration comment: 1) The guns embedded in the hull are called "casemate" guns. 2) The Nelsons never had any casemated guns; they had the 3 twin 6" guns on each side aft from the outset. Also, Nelson's torpedo tubes were below the waterline, so we wouldn't see any evidence of them from this video. The King George V's 14-inch guns were really good guns. Here's the broadside weight (total weight of shells fired in a broadside) for other Tier 8 battleships, firing AP: KGV: 15,900 lbs. Bismarck: 14,112 lbs. Amagi: 22,050 lbs. North Carolina: 24,300 lbs. The KGV guns might have been smaller than their compeers, but whenever they were put to the test, they did the job and did the job superbly.

MrFatcat17 actually the original design was worked up with three triple 15", it was the preferred option but the upcoming treaty negotiations had a 14" limit with a 16" escalator clause and negotiations wouldn't work of you were building ships with bigger guns than you were proposing to limit ships to. so they switched from three triple 15" to three quad 14", but the additional weight meant the B turret had to drop for a twin and thus you get the historically built KGV. After they started building the escalator clause came in and all future designs were for 16"

Drachinifel its nice to see someone knows their history, people think the kgv class was exempt from the treaty rules but the amended 1936 London treaty meant that she had the 14 inch guns (the yanks used the clause to go 16 inch) and really the extra 10000 tons was good (and the 14 inch guns had more krupp penetration than the 15 inch). For Britain the treaty ended September 3rd 1939 :)

Actually Jingles, the wrongly tiered images were a mess up on WGs part. KGV was intended to be tier 8 and Nelsol intended to be tier 7 from the start. They just goofed when it came to making the stat cards. KGV with 14" guns might play a bit like a tier 8 Scharnhorst.

1. Wargaming has copied _King George V_ in all respects, changed the gun stats to 14", and stuck her at tier 7 as _Monarch_. This includes the credit and XP prices, which has confused just about everyone. If she's a placeholder name for a premium, why doesn't she have a gold price? 2. When you actually look at the data on the 14" guns (not the 15" guns masquerading as 14" guns on the tier 8), they are not significantly better than *New Mexico's*. They have the same damage, worse Krupp (used in penetration calculations), and a lower muzzle velocity. The exact arcs and penetration are as yet unknown (I at least haven't seen a fnord_disc graph yet), but I don't have high hopes. 3. Historically, _Scharnhorst_ had a 20 second reload (actually a bit better at 17.14 seconds). _King George V_ had the standard 30 second. Wargaming has adjusted ROF slightly in the past, but never that much. She is not going to work well at tier 8 with the 14" guns. However, she uses the data for the 15" guns in the current testing version, so we will see what happens.

Vanguard has the same guns as the Warspite (incidentally one of her guns was actually taken from Warspite before she was scrapped), with a tier 9 hull. She'll be a tier 8 premium guaranteed.

Main difference between the Japanese 18.1" and British 18" was the British AP shell was 100 pounds heavier and had an almost 4km better effective firing range (25km vs 28.7km) but had a slightly lower max range (42km vs 38km both at 45 degrees) due to muzzle velocity of 780 m/s vs 740 m/s. British gun holds the record for longest range shore bombardment hitting a targeted bridge 32km inshore.

Interestingly enough, on wiki it says that the conqueror was to be part of the second series of Lion class battleships to be laid down in 1939 (after Lion and tremeraire in 1938) the conqueror was ordered but never laid down. however the other ship of the 1939 batch of Lion class battleships, which was to be HMS thunderer was not ordered. The other two Lion class ships that were planned to be built in 1940 received no name and were cancelled before they could be ordered. the Lion and tremeraire are playable in atlantic fleet if anyone is interested.

ST's come from a variety of skill levels. Some are potatoes, some are average, some are unicums. Don't forget, WG needs to know how the ship will handle in the hands of all players, not just experts. Plus, you don't know how long they've had with the ship when this was filmed... so they could be very unfamiliar with what they're playing. Also, people tend to focus new or rare ships... so trying to test ships can be a real pain

HMS Nelson class also had unique characteristics primarily in the fact that at times a war outer bulkheads in her hull could be filled with water gave her extra torpedo protection at peace they where emptied so kept the class under the weight limitations set by the Washington treaty.

NELSON's 16" guns only had 2080-lb streamlined-nosed, higher-velocity 16" Mk IB APC shells (they were not enlarged British 15" type!), somewhat lighter than most WWI foreign 16" APC (US COLORADO-Class BBs had 2110-lb, which was the closest), and significantly lighter than foreign WWII 16" APC (US & Japanese 16"/16.1" had at least 2240-lb APC (older ships using new ammo) and, in the new US 16"-gunned BBs, 2700-lb APC). Thus, the NELSON Class had the lightest APC shells for any 16"-gunned BB, ever. I am not sure what the term "short-delay fuze" means. The British APC in WWII did have only 0.025-second (the same as German late-model APC's delay-action fuzes in WWI) in their new, post-Battle of Jutland APC shells and all later APC base fuze designs, to my knowledge, instead of 0.035-second used by most foreign APC in WWII, but this was quite long enough to go pretty deep into any target (1/3 of the BB-sized ship width inside the hull before blowing up instead of 1/2 of the ship width doesn't mean much, now does it?). Only in some odd-ball cases would the shorter delay be a penalty. All post-Jutland British AP-type shells for guns 6" and up and very-late-WWII German 5.9" and up APC shells (after circa-1943) had a good benefit in that they could have all delay bypassed on loading into the gun, if desired, making them act much like an HE shell, but able to penetrate the any armor (that they could penetrate under that impact, of course) before exploding -- this would ELIMINATE the so-called "over-penetration" problem that other AP shells suffer if the shell's fuze is set off; obviously a big benefit in this game, if included! Only if the fuze is not set off would the shell go through the target as currently is the case in the game. No other large-caliber (5.9" and up) AP-type shells had this benefit. Any HE shell that "penetrates" like an AP shell has ALL of the same restrictions as an AP shell, including ricochet, in real life with the added problem of being lightly built so that it breaks up much more easily if it hits armor at an oblique angle. How can it be otherwise? We are not talking APFSDS or HEAT or HESH rounds, are we? Those are the only kinds of armor penetrating rounds that act much differently on direct penetration than AP (APCR/APDS projectiles are mostly just very heavy, very fast, small AP rounds for most purposes) and we are not talking about those here. You want to give HE shells, with their much larger explosive charge, the benefits of a reduced AP-type penetration using an optional base fuze -- as with US WWII large-caliber HC shells -- then you also get *all* of the penalties, too. I do not understand what is going on with these "penetrating" HE shells if they cannot ricochet -- they are not obeying the laws of physics.

The Bofors had 7-12 km max range depending on the model, the 5.25 inch/134 mm guns had 21 km (land), 11 km (AA) range. Now had those specs been in game I think CV and DD captains would've complained about it together....

So no talking about the tier 3-6 battleships? I will say I'm interested, but not surprised, with the route they took with Vanguard, KGV, and Nelson. Nelson is a slow ship armed with 16" guns from the 1920s. Much more in-line with the Colorados and Nagatos. You can't really put her at tier 6 because the Warspite, a Queen Elizabeth class battleship, is in the game at tier 6. It would be a crime to not include the Queen Elizabeths in the main British battleship line. The KGVs were built in WWII and are more of a contemporary to the Bismarcks and North Carolinas, and thus with sufficient buffing to her 14" guns would fit at that tier nicely. The big issue with Vanguard is that, although she's fast and armed with the fire control of the Iowas, she only has WWI era 15" guns. Fire control doesn't seem to play much of a role in WoWS, so really I couldn't see her being more than a tier 8. And she didn't serve in WWII, like the KGVs did, and was the only battleship of her class, where 5 KGVs were built. So the KGV would naturally get precedence. The Lions at tier 9 was pretty expected. Tier 5 and 6 were pretty expected to me, and I don't think they screwed up there. Queen Elizabeth fits well at tier 6, Iron Duke fits well at tier 5. However, the tier 3 and 4 I do feel were stupid decisions. What HMS Bellerophon being at tier 3 says to me is that Wargaming is going to try to milk more money out of its players by making Dreadnought a premium. But HMS Orion at tier 4??? What??? HMS Orion has the exact same armament as HMS Iron Duke, and really isn't that much different of a battleship. Although you could have the Iron Duke upgraded a bit more than the Orion, having a ship with 10 13.5" guns at tier 4 is frankly a bit ridiculous. The Americans and Germans only get 12" guns at that tier, and although the Japanese get 14" guns they only get 6 of them. 10 13.5" guns with performance said to be similar to 14" guns at tier 4 is ridiculous! And it's not like the British lacked battleship classes you could place here. HMS Neptune and HMS Colossus would've been perfect! A 10 12" gun broadside, similar to the Kaisers, of 12" guns, which are improved from those fitted on Dreadnought and the Bellerophons, would work far better for that tier than a 10 13.5" gun broadside. So yeah, the decision at tier 3 seems to be a greedy one and the decision at tier 4 is honestly a stupid one. Everything else I can agree with, although the tier 7-8 area is going to require balancing to get right.

Orion had the same guns of Iron Duke (the 13.5-inch Mk V guns) but she fired a 1'265 lbs shell vs the 1'400 lbs shell of Iron Duke. Also, Konig at tier 5 and Kaiser at tier 4 have the same armament and (at least historically) they were pretty much the same ship... exactly like Orion and Iron Duke.

You know, you make good points, and the tonnage difference between Kaiser and Konig was less than that between Orion and Iron Duke. Hadn't actually known of the different variants of the 13.5" gun of the British superdreadnoughts, I had thought they were identical. Hadn't realized the Kaiser and Konigs were as similar as they are; I had always thought the Konigs had better armor in addition to their better turret layout. So I guess the Orion does fit at tier 4 than, more than the Colossus does.

Vanguard was obviously slated to be a T8 premium from the get-go for various reasons, including the fact that it was the last BB ever launched. KGV's guns are most likely going to be 15" in the historical 10-gun layout unless they'd go through the effort of actually remodelling it as the 3x3 15-C design which would delay the line by quite some time and therefore they won't do it. They're apparently toying around with a regular 14" armed KGV at T7 which will probably cause us to get another stupid Scharnhorst/Gneisenau situation where the historically armed ship is a premium. I'm perfectly fine with the Nelson being at T7. It's probably going to be the weakest of the T7 BBs, but at least all of the Big Seven battleships are at the same tier and it's probably not going to be that bad compared to the rest assuming that bow-on tanking will work. Another possibility would be to put the T7 KGV they're playing around with as the regular tech tree ship which advances into the not-quite-15-C abomination at T8 and have the Nelson as a T7 premium. Here's hoping that there will be a choice to switch back to the 4x2 18" gun layout on the Conqueror if they stick with the boring 4x3 16.5" Montana-clone layout. I'm not going to bother to grind towards another boring 4x3 layout that's on literally every T10 battleship save for the Yamato.

The Nelsons torpedo tubes were underwater, and fixed, so might need to get it in the drydock shipyard and see if they were modelled, unlikely to be usable though, but the Mutsu premium gets them, Rodney actually fired some in anger (and maybe hit the Bismarck) so if Rodney becomes the premium... :D

It's basically the same 40MM Bofors that Sweden put on their CV90 APC. (Export versions usually sport the 30mm Bushmaster 2 though, same as the Bradley use.) A nice gun whatever elevation you fire it at.

People underestimate the capability of the 14 inch guns, which were rather fantastic guns in their own right, but were mounted and utilised rather poorly giving them a bad rep. Its also important to note that KGV was the second most heavily armoured class of ship in the world, after Yamato, possessing what is considered to be a superp armour scheme.

Actually, they were better at long ranges than those on New Mexico, and only worse at short ranges (to mid-ranges). This has problems in game, but I can't say much more for NDA reasons. I can only go full history on it. (And yes BeachedWhale, I know who you are from reddit). Anyway, NewMex's guns fair decently against tier 8s and 9s (Failed div'd a bit :/), but saying more is dangerous territory for a ST, even if I try to stick to historical stuff.

I only found out about Arlios last summer, but he is by far my favorite channel when it comes to WOWS, Still love Jingles for the ship history content though.

The KGV has 15" guns ingame and has high AP and HE dmg, as well as high chance to set fire. Also the AP has the same features as the Hood and Warspite, meaning shorter fuses(1,5ms instead of 2ms) and better normalisation for the shells. So she is a citadel wonder on CA's. Also, because those are not enough features she also gets german HE pen(1/4 instead of the normal 1/6 of gun caliber). And lastly they all can heal 30% of citadel dmg instead of 20%. So Yeh balanced as hell.

Just like to point out that the KGV will actually have 15inch guns, its an un-historical set up but at tier 7 there will be a KGV with 14 inch guns possibly a premuim :)

I'm calling it now: The HMS Vanguard is going to be a premium Battleship. Also one thing I noticed about the Lion is... holy crap that thing can scoot. It gets up to speed *really* fast.

Considering there were plans for the KGVs to be upgunned to 16" guns surely that would make more sense then 15inch guns.

Check out the wiki Jingles... specifically the fire and flood coefficient rules: Tier has almost nothing to do with power or gun size and EVERYTHING to do with age. To illustrate this look at the original BB lines.. USN representing the historic TL with the WNT and the IJN the non WNT one to fit Yamato in at T10. The USN built BB's as technology warranted and each new class had better fire suppression and flooding protection.. it also had more technical equipment(upgrade slots). So the older ships burn and flood the easiest and have the fewest upgrades.. the T10 which are all the newest ones/last design built of that class within the games parameters.. had the best protection and fire and flooding and the most upgrades. Yes there are some exceptions but generally you can tier by year of construction..

Had a Lion on the enemy team in one of my matches recently. Game was going well for my team, but unsurprisingly, once that thing popped, everyone just ignored the destroyers and battleships around them just to get a couple of shots at the Lion. Equally unsurprisingly, we lost. Lessons learned: Whenever your team desperately needs a comeback, just send a new ship on a suicide mission. 100% success rate.

Jingles i can tell you right now from experiance, the Conqueror (at least) has the most over powered heal in the game, equal to the minotaur/neptune heal, i know this after seeing one heal from 5k to around 40k hp with one heal, it does 4927 damage on a normal penetration, and it has decent citadel protection (didnt get citadeled from a missouri shell striking where the citadel should be located, from a range of 14km)

Jingles just to let you know, the King George the 5th guns are NOT 14 inch guns, they are 15 inch guns. The tier 7 premium King George Class (currently named monarch) gets 14 inch guns.

When it comes to the King George V, they might reflect the British emphasis on rapid fire you mentioned in the Bismarck videos. If the ship can fire fast, and has the German caliber/4 math for HE... we're talking a decent ship.

The biggest problem I'm seeing with British battleships is that it seems that historically they went for damage, not penetration. In Wows, you would have the highest alpha damage, *and* penetration if you literally fired a giant solid metal slug.... Irl each 14 inch shell from the KGV hit substantially harder than the shells of the Iowas if they penetrated. But in this game they'll be weak as shit even when they do penetrate.

Even with the 14" - if they gave it a really fast reload ... plus I think there was a superheavy version of the 14" for these that did about as much damage as the 15" ... and it's probably very tanky with it's armor ... it might be able to pound pretty hard if you were attentive to where you were firing on bow-on targets. It also could really be Hell on cruisers with its fast firing rate.

I believe that the Vanguard should be tier 10, it was after the last battleship to serve plus it was a very good ship. The Royal Navy has more then enough battleships for a second tree but of course that itll far in the future as the first hasnt been released yet. With a bit of research im sure we'll find that it'll be possible for the US to have a second battleship line too, maybe add some paper ships to fill in the gaps.

There is a design problem on the King Goerge V. At the place of the ships, the small ship is usually on the upper place next to the fireplace and in the place of the ship there is the catapult in front of the two hangars

Jingles, KGV with 15" gun isn't fantasy. The 15" Mk II gun was initially developed specifically for the 3x3 15" KGV plan.

I'll wait and see on the KGV, after all the Scharnhorst is tier 7 with 11" guns, so there may well be more to the 14s that make up for the lower caliber. And they may change it around still.

There were actually studies for a 3x3 15" design for the KGV. The reason for it not being carried out was the Second London Naval Treaty which aimed to limit the calibre of guns to 14". Some info on the 15" guns: www.navweaps.com/Weapons/WNBR_15-45_mk2.php
