It is prob more likely that the two stories arose from a single story that floated around orally and, over time became 2 or more versions which were then compiled into a single story at some point. I would say the second story was prob compiled by a different group who had never read the first one. Then, at some still further point, some other group came across both stories, and they were different enough to both earn a place in the mega-book, which we call the Biblee.

@Southern Fun Are you listening to yourself? A boy was abandoned by his mother at age 5, he was taken to an orphanage, where he was physically and mentally abused. He ran away from there and started sleeping on the streets and looking after himself. He started a gang in his teens and was involved in all kinds of evil. He wanted to bomb a church meeting, fully armed and somehow his heart was touched and he gave his life to Christ. From that moment onward, he started telling people about Christ. Then one day, at age 54, he prayed for a woman at a meeting, the woman got healed and she said from all that you have shared, I am the mother who abandoned you and they were reunited..... So, you think that is a story of delusion? Are you listening to yourself at all? Is he the one that is deluded or you that is saying so? Are you listening to yourself?

Yeah. Some religious people also believe atheists have no moral compass, or have no reason to be moralistic, which says a lot more about those religious people than the atheists. But I can’t help but feel bad for people who are Christians, even though I disagree, because believing that there is life after death is what keeps a lot of people going. Thinking heaven and hell is real makes those people believe someone who has hurt them will go to hell, and that their loved ones are waiting for them. Some people need that to cope with death. And, although sad, I think that if it helps them mentally I’m glad they practice it. I just hate when they push it on other people, I got harassed a lot just because in class people were talking about the Bible, and I whispered to my friend,” I haven’t read the Bible, so this is awkward.” She shouted and told everyone I didn’t, and they told me I was going to hell and blah blah blah... Take the story about Abraham and Isaac. Until the end, I was like "stupid Abraham. God obviously wants to test if this guy is a psycho murderer. Way to fail the easiest test in the world. What a monster." And then the teacher is like "Abraham proved his overwhelming LOYALTY". Yes, loyalty to some voice that popped up in his head one day and said he's the true boss man, and that he wants Abe to murder his own son, because... reasons. I had a personal crisis because I could not reconciliate my thinking with what I was told.

Thank you for addressing this story. When I was going through my phase about 10 years ago of trying to be a Christian (though I'm told adults can't have phases, lol), I was working on reading the entire Bible, and came across this story. It made me so mad, and so confused! It began changing the way I viewed God and the Bible. I've been raped more than once, and to see that God condoned, and even encouraged this, made me do upset! My immediate thought was, how could a god that is supposed to be loving, approve of this? This went against everything that I was told he was supposed to be. Sadly, when ever I've brought this story up to anybody, they not only do not know of it, most also attempt to justify it. There is no way to justify this. It is sick. Period. Before my phase, I believed in God because that's how I was raised, but otherwise, I questioned his existence, and wanted nothing to do with religion. This story was a major turning point in my life. I had already began serious questioning for other reasons, and finding this only added to those questions, and changed my perception of the god that I was being strongly encouraged to follow. Not entirely because of this story, but in part due to it, I'm now an atheist. And it really means more than you know that you addressed it. Thank you so much. I also laughed at hard at the bull horn parts of the story, and the goat. Loved it.

When i read that story i wondered: Does that count as a sequel, a remake, or just as a cheap fanfiction? PS: I´ve just re-read it to confirm. The text doesn´t explicitly say that the concubine died because of the rape, she just didn´t move when he asked her to get up. So its quite possible HE killed her when he cut her into pieces. Usually i wouldn´t read it that way, but its the bible, it wouldn´t be the worst atrocity that book condones.

Well, the merchandise (the woman) was already very screwed (quite literally), so what better way to take advantage of the situation than to chop her into little bits.
@zzhoward5 жыл бұрын
I think with Judges 20:4-5 it probably clarifies that she was killed by the rapists. "The husband of the woman who was slain..." - could have easily mentioned that the husband slay her at that point, rather than saying "was slain''. And then in 5 - "And the men of Gibeah rose against me ... and my concubine have they forced, that she is dead." I'm going with "that she is" implying causality there. Kind of, I rode my horse for so long, that he was tired. Either way, it's completely messed up, and just another example of a bible story that make absolutely no sense in retrospect whatsoever.

I remember reading this as a kid and I can tell you that my expectations were slightly subverted when the woman was chopped up by her former companion after dying from injuries suffered from the gang rape. Just slightly because similar things have happened, but the amount of time 10 year old me spent thinking about how he decided which parts to butcher her body into was... too much. Everything else was actually pretty par for the course, so I just read through it, no surprise. And I'd say the biggest surprise pre-New Testament was definitely Song of Songs/Solomon. Whole lotta talk about sex and no one dies an excruciating death and informed me that Solomon was a boob man. Ecclesiastes also gave me my first existential crisis.

@L154N4LG4IB3 жыл бұрын
And also even worse is we don’t even know if the men that raped and beat her all night were even captured and killed. Which means God nearly instigated the extinction of the tribe of Benjamin for nothing and literally had the tribes kill all the men and non virgin women of jabesh gilead and those men could be among the Benjamin men that received virgin women as wives as compensation for their wrongdoing which means the entire thing was literally pointless and no real punishment was actually given.

THIS is the story that officially made me stop believing in the bible. I was trying to read it from start to finish and up until this point, I had already been having trouble finding justifications for a lot of the fuck shit I was reading in there. I was trying with all my might to hold on to my “faith”. But when I read this….. I was done. I could no longer defend or justify a god that would go through all this trouble to kill people and rape women. It made absolutely NO sense and I gave up trying to believe any of it. I walked away and left that mess where it lay. That was in 2010 and I’ve had not one regret since.

DarkMatter2525: this is why I consider you to be the smartest and most original of the new atheist KZbinrs. When I saw the title of this video, I thought "Is this going to be yet another commentary on Deuteronomy? Not exactly breaking new ground here." Then I click on the video and find a totally fresh commentary on a story I wasn't even aware of, filtered through the lens of a commentary on Star Wars. As an aside: I prefer the Jewish interpretation of Judges. Apparently, this part of the bible refers to a period of moral decay in Israel, and the behaviours depicted are not intended to be emulated. Christians on the other hand feel a need to justify every single passage, no matter how barbaric, and consequently, they end up stripping much of what we can learn from said passages.

Why do we have money? As a easy way to prove that you have helped the fellow person today. That you have done something valuable for the society. If money didn't have any use for us we would have abandoned it ages ago. Why do we have rulers? Because we are hirearcical animals. Its in our nature. Heck, It's in the nature of most of the animals in this planet. World without rulers is impossible to create. Yes you can create anarchy for awhile but eventually someone will come along and gather enough support from people that they become the new ruler. And most likely they will be worse, more tyrannical than the rulers we today. I get your point of view, I once thought like you. Technically we don't need money or rulers to survive in this world, but do you really want to live in a world where survival is your primary concern or in a world where you don't have to think how you're going to survive to the next day?
