The most helpful tips I have for moving is to get free boxes from bunnings, ask coles / woolies for their boxes they are always happy to pass on or your local buy nothing group and label each box, kitchen , bedroom etc. Get a storage unit if you can about a month out and start moving out anything small you can yourself so when the removalists come there isn't much for them to do and it's cheaper per hour. Also make each child a bag for their first night pack like your going on holiday so when they get to the new place they have everything, toothbrush, pj's books, electronics etc.

Great tips. We picked up about 30 boxes for $40 from market place - proper moving ones... purchased a few bits and boxes from Bunnings - they have some great moving stuff now. I don't think a storage unit would be cost effective to be honest... - and we will be moving everything ourselves in my husband's work truck and friends' utes and trailers... loads of hard work. Great tips for the kids too. We actually need to get some suitcases for the kids - I might ask around and see if anyone has any lying around empty. Thanks for your suggestions. x

I support channels by not skipping ads. With all the uncertainty going on, I hope the long apple commercial I'm watching puts something in the pot for y'all. We went through this last year when, after telling us they had no intention of selling for a few more years and that they know there was a real risk it would make us homeless, they decided to take advantage of the market anyway and sell after we'd been there 10+ years (although, jokes on them because they didn't get anywhere near the asking price and lost money on it because they hadn't maintained it either lol I embrace the pettiness 😏) From personal experience, I totally understand the panic and sadness you must be feeling. The realisation of how real the possibility of homelessness is is an incredibly overwhelming and devastating experience. As, is uprooting from somewhere you've called home for over a decade, especially when it's not by choice. It's so messed up that this sort of thing is allowed to happen and that you're expected to just get on with it because "that's life". But it's so much for a person to go through and you're allowed to feel what you feel without always having to try and put a positive spin on it and "think positive". Sometimes it just truly feels (and is) rubbish and that's okay. I don't have anything helpful to say because I'm honestly not sure how I made it through it all myself but I just wanted to say that I'm sending positive thoughts and crossing my fingers that it all works out for you as you need it to 💜💜
@MySemiSortedLife

Wow, that's such a messed up situation! I can't believe they did that to you after promising otherwise. Well, at least they didn't get the asking price and lost money on it! Karma has its ways, right? But seriously, it's unfair that you had to go through all of that. Your comment did truly help - just knowing I'm not alone makes the world of difference. I hope you have somewhere you love now? x

From our renting days I recall you can ask your real estate to help you find a new place - I am pretty sure they are obliged to ensure you aren't kicked out and become homeless. AND, ask the real estate to ask the landlord to be kind and if you find a property earlier than your lease ends to mutually cancel the lease so you don't have to pay double rent beyond the week or so it takes you to move. Most landlords would do this, especially given that it is them who have initiated the need for you to move in the first place. I also think bonds can be transferred from property to property - definitely enquire to real estate about this to see if it is still a thing and how that might work. My guess without knowing anything else specific is that maybe the landlord is thinking to sell empty and take advantage of the high house prices. Maybe they are ready to retire now or something too. Can be all sorts of reasons to do so. Like maybe a family member or them themselves need to live there. Times are tough for everyone. Whatever the reason, I am hoping you will end up somewhere better and you'll look back and see this as a blessing.

Hi Mel, lovely to see you, you can do this, the thought of moving is difficult and we all feel like it's to much but take an honest look at your house? That draw in the kitchen is broken and has been ever since i started watching you, so they don't care about the place so you can do the same, I'm not saying trash it but if you can just let the emotions go. Mine has only had emergency repairs in the last 20 years and quite a bit before that 😳, so you can find a place where you can live that's much better cared for, ❤

So sorry that you and your family have to go through this. I think in many parts of the world housing and rent are outrageous. Our family went through a similar thing just a few months ago. We’ve been renting the same place for around 20 years but a family member of the landlord was moving in. We couldn’t afford to rent another place in the city, we were living in Toronto Canada so we decided to move to another city and buy a home. We were fortunate to have some inheritance. By the way we became first time homebuyers after the age of 50. So it’s ok if you’re a bit older when you’re ready to buy a house 😉. Wishing you and your family all the best!

Be as petty as you like! I don't think you're being petty anyway, it's good to let it out - your landldord can feck right off 😁It's going to cost him to rent it back out for sure. Just a thought - are the kitchen appliances yours? I'm thinking in particular about the fridge. I lost a fridge once due to one of our many house moves. I turned it straight back on when we put it in the new house and the motor blew. You have to leave a fridge switched off for a good 3 hours or so for the gasses to settle back down 🥰🥰🥰

Not sure if it is a Qld wide thing (I think it is), but I think the rules have changed regarding pets... not allowed to discriminate regarding pets now. I think the tenant just need to ensure the fencing, etc would be suitable to keep their pets contained, and obviously pest control still needs to be attended. Anyway... this would be a good thing to check before you get too concerned. And I assume you offered more rent in case that persuades them? (I reckon you would have... just thought I'd mention it in case). We are building a shed-house that a family member was going to move into but that arrangement fell through... it's a shame you aren't anywhere near us, I'd offer it to you. :(

Naw thanks Rach - yeah landlords can't deny pets once you live there - but if you have them on your application and it's a toss up between you and someone who doesn't have pets there's a risk they would still choose the pet-less people. It will be ok though.... ;-)

Oh Mel, I’m sorry. That’s the thing about renting, it’s all relative and you never know the circumstances of the landlord’s life. Since Covid, being a landlord has also become more difficult, that’s not your fault but that’s the sad facts, The difficulties get passed on. I’m 52 and both of my (adult) children are still at home and can’t afford to move out. Can’t afford to get married or start a family of their own and it’s all really, very sad to be honest. Life in Australia is very, very difficult. I have no advice to offer but I offer my sympathies.

Yes - its definitely so hard - the thing I think I'm most frustrated about is that I suspect that this current landlord is a foreign owner - and so they have not invested in this home to make it better for locals nor will locals benefit from the sale or future tenants. I think the government needs to prevent International investors while we face this cost of living crisis so that it all comes back into our own economy...(or at least tax everything higher for those international investors.) Not that I pretend to understand the economy of course. lol Thank-you for your support and encouragement.

Trust me Mel, it’s awful now but I know it will work out in the end. You’ve had so many challenges and it’s worked out in the end. Also, I’ve seen people ask Facebook groups if they know of any rentals in the area and email local real estate agents about properties. You could write a letter about you guys, rental history etc when you apply for places so it’s more personal but don’t mention the pets. I wonder if Mel K would have any tips and tricks since ofc she’s in the real estate industry!

Yep - I've been in Mel's ear a lot... def been in Facebook groups. I think this will be a case of not what we know but who we know.

Is there no chance of getting approved for a mortgage now?

No - and even if there was the market is so inflated that we could end up worse off in two years. It's safer to rent until my eldest is 18.

Is the friend of a friend's house still an option?

It depends on whether they find somewhere to rent near their new job. They can technically commute if they need to.
