In this video, Diana Bytyqi, DNP-FNP-C, discusses foods that should be avoided, when possible, to reduce the risk of diabetes and for those trying to better manage their diabetes. It is important to know note that, foods are ranked based on glycemic index, a system used to determine how likely a food will increase blood sugar levels.
Additionally, these foods are known to increase "belly fat" known as central obesity, which places us at higher risk for serious health issues, such as, heart disease.
It is important to watch portion sizes and make substitutions, when possible. For example, whole wheat pasta is better than white pasta because it contains more fiber and therefore, makes us feel fuller and slows down the absorption of sugar into our bloodstream.
