Don't know if it's a controversial opinion or not, but IMHO "Antz" was a really great underrated film. It had a memorable soundtrack, interesting characters and pretty sophisticated plot. "Bugs life" is for children, "Antz" is for adults ;)

Actually it's because advances in technology have made humans easier to render realistically or stylistically. Animals were more prevalent in the early days of animation because they were comparatively easier to draw and suspend the disbelief of animation for. In the modern day, it's not seen as so impossible, so going with animals is now a stylistic choice.
