Why would bank's profit margin shrink if interest rates fall? The bank borrows money from the state bank at 'x' interest rate. The bank adds a premium (let's say 3%) and lends it out. So, the bank is lending money at x+3%. The state bank decreases the interest by 'y', now the bank is lending money at 'x-y+3%'. Their profit is same on both sides. The bank's profits will only go down if they don't have enough customers to lend money to. If you are going to say that the bank uses depositor's money, that is true. But if they don't have enough money in deposits, they borrow money from state bank. Almost all countries around the world have variable interest rate. The US is the only exception with fixed rate interest on loans. The downside of fixed rate is when interest rate is high, people don't want to borrow as they will be locked into that interest rate for the life of the loan.
