If it's to the extent that it affects the session itself then I agree. A session should definitely be mostly about getting training(and tecniques) in. I've had a PT for about half a year now(she's due to go on leave in less than a month due to having a baby soon) I chose her, because I felt like we had a good connection. We do talk a lot... in between sets and while I catch my breath and I go from our sessions feeling like I actually did a good piece of work(and gone from using the small 4-6kg kettlebells to the bigger ones where I'm almost ready for the 20kg) I don't think I would have gotten a PT, had she not worked there and then my time in the gym would have been a fail as I would just go for machines all the time.

prajwal karate dojo I sometimes feel like the first one, when telling someone what to do, what not to do, show them how, and then let them do it and their form is so far away from what I told them that I just want to pull my hair out. Then I'm like, okay let's back up and go over the basics, starting with form and progressing to a correct squat. Then they're like, "I don't want to do the absolute basics." Me: "....... you can't squat and you're going to get hurt doing it like that." Them: "hhhhhhh. Okay I gues."

Have you tried just giving people one thing to do at a time? I find that if people have never squatted before (as an example), then it's hard for them to focus on more then one, maybe two things. Start them out with BW squats (disguise them as warmups). It's impossible to get injured doing a bw squat, so here it's easy to fix the basics in a squat, one at a time. Something like. "Okay. We start with BW squats for warmup" *They do a BW squat* "Okay, that's great. When you go down make sure your knees are pointing the same way as your toes" *They do a squat while looking at their knees and toes* "That's perfect. Now try and keep your chest up and look ahead" Then just keep going from there, at the end they can get to do a few sets with the bar, and it's usually pretty good by then. and then just remember that perfect form comes with a lot of practice, so don't expect them to be perfect from the beginning. Focus on what they are doing right more then what they are doing wrong. That way they are much more likely to keep doing that when you give them a new que, and it makes them feel great ;)

Christian Olsen I agree, all of these are things that I do. I got one person in mind who I've worked with for a long time, and I'm not sure that he'll ever squat normal. When he squats he leans in on his right medial part of his foot and turns his knee in. I've got him doing bw squats because he needs foundational work. I think the next thing I'll do is wrap a band or towel around his knees to where he can push just past shoulder width and do bw box squats. His form is usually very wide, like a power lifter, but we're working on athleticism so I've incorporated plyos and he struggles with a shoulder width stance. The biggest thing I'm concerned with now is when he jumps, he does it from a power lifting stance and lands that way also, and I'm like "dude, you're going to have knee trouble if you keep doing that." And I've told him about the purpose of an athletic position. Honestly, we're in the middle of preparing for an obstacle race, but I'm not gonna schedule one until he starts adjusting because he's gonna get hurt the way he is right now. He just needs to want it more, and see how messed up his form is. I'm dead sure he's overestimating himself and thinks me trying to fix his form isn't necessary, but it totally is. He cannot get into an athletic position with just bodyweight, or resistance and if he can't do that, then he can't move safely. He also calls off training all of the time. Idk, it's just some people I guess. He just got married so that probably has a lot to do with the way he prioritizes things, and I can understand that. It just bugs me because he's not gonna go anywhere if we keep working half speed two days a week every week.

My first trainer would get mad at me when I asked her questions. Like, "Am I doing this correctly?" or "Do I have my elbows flared out enough?". Her literal reply was "As long as you are lifting the weight you are working out the muscle" Followed by me saying "Well I don't feel it in the chest, and my shoulder is killing me" and how she ended the conversation "Who knows what they are talking about? Me or you?" 6 months of working with her. Never activating my chest. All I had to show from working with her was a shoulder injury. On our last session when I couldn't move my arm correctly anymore without it hurting she told me that my shoulder pain was probably because of poor sleeping habits and that I slept on it funny. I had no idea how horrible she was until after I stopped working with her. Turns out shoulder pain shouldn't happen when doing chest workouts, and if it does happen there are things you can do to make it stop happening. I learned more from a couple KZbin video's then working with the trainer that cost me a few thousand dollars.

sorry I did not explain well, between non qualified and qualified be a personal trainer.it's great learning from books & training in strength training but it not same as qualified trainer,1) if a gym says they can insurance you it lie, you have your own public insurance plus personal cover you & client, as take some life in own hands. with out recognised qualifications you find legally you would big trouble2) recognised qualifications it not only read books & academic exams, you practice in a safe environment many subjects.3) with out recognised qualifications , would not no how to assess many different scenarios i.e food allergies/medical/physical/mental and so onyou wouldn't what Doctor with no qualifications to operate on you.

I was a personal trainer, so I certainly am biased. Though I felt sympathy for the clients in the second to the penultimate scenario - the last scene was of a "worst"trainer who victimizes another, seemingly competent, one - I must admit that I empathized with the trainer in the first scene! No doubt this is because I had a client who ignored virtually everything I said, as though I were not there. I couldn't understand (still cannot) why she would hire someone and pay him to offer advice, which she not only ignored but took deliberate and effective action to not hear: She wore earplugs during each session! (not kidding)

One thing I always see the trainers at my gym doing to a new trainee is pushing them way too hard with either too much weight or too many reps, or starting them out with some super technical lift/movement that a beginner probably shouldn't be doing. It annoys the crap out of me and I feel bad for the poor trainee. Needless to say, I rarely see them come back.

"The Cookie Cutter" --> steals programs off bodybuilding.com and uses them on every single client they have. Doesn't understand what a static or postural assessment is. Probably couldn't tell you what to look for on an overhead squat which is one of the best dynamic movements you can do to get a visual of where the client has limitations. "The carbs are bad guy" --> couldn't explain or even spell out glycolysis and what the process is. Has clients go on crash diets where they are severely limited in calories to think the client is losing weight fast, but doesn't understand it needs to be a gradual loss.

In the UK there's a voluntary registration where you have to prove that you've got actual qualifications to be a personal trainer Most gyms are now accepting people from this registrar. What is like in America

not in Britain, registrar of exercise professionals ( REPS's) is the golden standard, they set what standard qualification is need to work as personal trainersas well International portability REPs is a member of ICREPs, the International Confederation of Registers of Exercise Professionals, which holds the Global Standards adopted by all member registers. Through the mapping of standards at this international level, you have the option to bring in exercise professionals from other member countries, who will be recognised in the UK by REPs. The ICREPs member countries are:Australia ,Belguim, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Poland, South Africa, United Arab EmiratesUSAwww.exerciseregister.org/so like I said gyms are now accepting people from this registrar, won't hire people to work in a gym unless on the registrar as independent personal trainers who have not right qualification they would find hard to gain insurance for themselves & clients.

You missed the super skinny personal trainers, that have never lifted a weight in their life but think they know it all because they've read it all in the books. The trainers similar to the poacher where they butt in while you're working out to ask you what you're workout on and start chatting to you for ages stopping you from actually doing your workout. The trainers that push you to failure on every single set for every single rep.

Rudenutt there was this 130 lb PT at my gym that couldn't do a pullup. And he tells me that I'm not training correctly because my style is for strenght only ...all this while I'm doing pullups with 45s. I'm like yeah nigga keep giving me advice

Just because you're not as strong or as big doesn't mean you know nothing. Where you're doing research and are being taught everything by qualified professionals even if you're not super strong you still know what to do and how to do it. I can't sauat 500lbs but I can definitely tell when someone's squatting wrong, and you wouldn't believe the amount of small mistakes most even professional bodybuilders and fitness influencers do.

@@jackm3672 They dont have to be big, but if I'm getting lifting advice from someone (either gender or size) I want to see that they have increased their muscle mass beyond what they would naturally have. this shows they have been through the process and understand it from first hand experience. One gym I went to, one of the trainers had high school trampolining on his resume. Wtf
@ondrazposukie

haha I think the opposite, it's funny how all trainers have big muscles as is it qualified them to be trainers

@@GhostGuitars So someone has to be enhanced for you to take advice from them? Hmm idk about that. I think that if you see their progression to where they are at and that they can prove they know their stuff. I think that's a good indicator.
