That discussion about FTL in the 6:00 mark makes me wish I was in that chat so I could nerd out, but essentially this is why in good SCIFI you usually have designated jump points in between planetary stops. Effectively you'd initially rely on slower-than-light (but still fast) travel to map the distance between two safe points, then rely on advanced computer programs to instruct the FTL drive to travel for how long/at what distance before shutting down. From there it'd be no different than planning a normal trip. The bonus would be if we developed FTL communications (which based on what I've heard last, that might actually be made before proper FTL travel) and then have two waystations talking to one another describing the local cosmic weather to ensure there are no random collisions with foreign matter like asteroids or micrometeor showers.

6:20 One fun issue with current theoretical warp technologies is that any particles the warp field collided with on the way to the destination would stack up on the front of it. When you stop, these particles at *very nearly lightspeed* get launched in the direction of travel. Even in space, there are particles everywhere. Wherever you go, you will fire a highly precise planet-destroying beam in front of you the instant you try to stop. So to answer Ellis' question of what would happen if you warped into an atmosphere... well at the very least it would be the last time anyone got to experience said atmosphere as it would be obliterated.

On the subject of “warp” If you did manage to travel faster than light, chose a random direction (but still towards the more populated center of the galaxy) you would be the unluckiest bastard to have ever lived to even come close to a huge star, let alone an asteroid. Space between stars is really fucking empty. Now, ftl within a solar system might be a different story, but again, as they say “space big but space pretty empty”

"Well, actually" that episode of Black Mirror is kind of the opposite situation. The real astronauts are on the ship while their "flesh puppets" are on Earth. Kind of makes you wonder why they didn't do it the other way around, but then I guess it wouldn't have been as good an episode.
@Salted_Fysh2 ай бұрын
Regarding FTL travel: "Warping" to locations with known data would likely be done using the power of maths to predict the position of objects of interest. If this is not feasible, and you have reasonable sub-light capabilities, or in case where you don't have the necessary data, you could warp outside of the solar system and work your way in or take the necessary readings from there. The likelihood to hit something important out there is close to nil and these kinds of travel methods would very likely include at least some form of protection against smaller objects. That is assuming there isn't a method of FTL communication, in which case you can just designate and communicate entry and exit points points in the system, just like we do with runways and the control towers on airports. There's no reason why it wouldn't work in space other than communication delay.

So im a huge nerd and the whole speed of light or faster than light travel is tackled in multiple sci fi media forms. The closest we have in real life is spaceships having computers that make tiny adjustments based on sensor readings but compared to light speed they still go very slow. Starwars explains warp travel by having hyper lanes, which are giant clear stretches of space dedicated for faster than light travel. Pretty much allowing pilots fo set the ship to fly straight for multiple light years. Other forms of media describe making shields a kind of shield out of plasma that pushes things away and theoretically these can exist it'd just be very draining in terms of resources. Then finally advanced ai with multiple types of sensors and scanners could steer for us but we'd have to rely on the system running on quantum computers and hooe nothing goes wrong which is difficult cause the universe doesn't like computers.
