To everyone whining about the taxi ripoff: he’s a solo traveler in a foreign country. Fighting over the fare could take a bad turn, and he has no backup. For safety purposes, it’s better to just let the jerks get the money. You can make more money. You can’t make more life.

There's no that hype of insecurity in Tanzania, we Tanzanians believe all white people visiting Tanzania are super rich, it doesn't mean if you deny to pay that money they will leave you or do anything bad to you, big no, they're just trying you to see where you will get to!

Stayed on Mafia in 2018 for diving. Loved it!! The south beach is beautiful and in the north you can encounter whale sharks. You should have stayed a night or two.

If the check-in agent wasn't wondering why you were turning around and heading straight back to Dar, then I was! I don't know how you can go to the time and expense of going to these out of the way places and then not allow any time for at least a quick look around! I know you love to fly, but not having so much as an overnight stay would leave me feeling so unfulfilled. But hey, we're all different I suppose. 🤷‍♂️🙂

The runway had a history of being sponsored to be tarmac a couple of times and the money vanishing over the years. My memory of doing the runways inspection was the aircraft being a lot lower and the turn at the far end being very close to the tops of the palm trees before circling around.

Nice! You should do the cross the pacific on a 737 flight. It’s the tiny island hopper flight from Hawaii to Asia. It used to end up in Hong Kong but I think it now ends up in Japan. Did this very flight in 2015! Pilot let me sit up front and do an aileron roll in the cruise with all my mates in the back! 😂 went for a scuba diving course. Mafia is one of the best places in the world for it!

Best to negotiate fare before getting in taxi. Have done this around Africa and in Eastern Europe. Meter is not used. Agree with other comments that you are making it harder for other travellers to get a reasonable fare.

Probably, they're wondering why the Mzungu went to Mafia....and back. Oh well, you haven't lived until you've taken Air Tanzania's ATR42 Flight from Dar to Shinyanga, where I was working, a gravel strip, when the over-confident pilot ignored the windsock, and landed downwind. As we passed the end of the gravel runway....and went off the end....i braced myself against the bulkhead. The male flight attendant said that I should sit normally, and I pointed out to him that we had just gone off the end of the runway......he got very pale. lol

The copilot is clearly Tanzanian (his accent is the brand) and the captain is very likely a Tanzanian of Indian decent (as there are many such Pilots in Tanzania).
