I am a man, tall, and in pretty good shape, who frequently hikes alone in the backcountry with a large knife strapped to my leg. On my 20+ mile hikes I see very few or no other people. About once or twice each year I will come across a lost hiker or pair of hikers and some of them have been women. Every single one of those hikers has been ecstatic to see me, never afraid.

My guess is that they would be less thrilled/happy to have encountered a bear even if they weren't scared as that would not get them out of the woods. No one who is lost in the woods and simultaneously encounters both a man and a bear thinks to themselves "thank goodness, someone who can help" and then rushes to consult the bear and avoid the man. And if they do, we shouldn't be taking anything they say seriously anyway because they've lost the thread on reality.

They brought up a good point though. If you’re in the woods and you spot a bear, it would be “Oh shit, I ran into a bear in the area where a bear should be.” But if you just find a random man standing in the woods, there’s the immediate concern of “Wait, what’s a random human doing just standing idly in the woods?” I think we spotted the problem with the question. It’s inherently suspicious to find people in the woods, because that’s no longer considered our normal habitat. It was a loaded question to begin with. Let’s try with a different setting. Would you rather find yourself locked in an IKEA alone with a bear or man?

The amusing thing is that I take weird hikes sometimes, and the biggest threat that I worry about when I do that kind of hiking is that I'll run into a person who is being as weird as I'm being. Not because of there gender but because they are people and as this video shows any person no matter gender can be dangerous. I rather come across a bear than 2 women hiding a dead body. Any bear you act the same and just play dead or act big because they aren’t sentient it would mostly work in most instances. Playing dead in front of 2 murderous not going to work I just a witness.

And though I don't think any of them is particularly dangerous,as someone who has lived in forest next to bears, I would choose a bear. Bears a less dangerous, never had any problems with them. As a someone who's spent time in the woods, and have encountered both. The bear has my attention when spotted, but never misbehaved or set off my instincts. I just got out of their zone. A mountain lion posed more danger one trip than any bear I've ever seen. I have spotted 2 men that set instincts off. One so badly I was looking for danger coming before he was in sight or a sound was to be heard. Most people in woods are some of the nicest I have met though. But always listen to those instincts.

This video helped me realize that I need a backup RB to boost my rushing yards. I am going to get killed again next season if I don't fix my mistakes from last season. As a man, I don't blame you. I don't pose any threat to female hikers, but they have no way of knowing that, and one is very vulnerable in the hinterlands. Meanwhile, fatal bear attacks are exceedingly rare. One is statistically safer in the woods with a bear than with a man or a woman, especially if one refrains from petting cubs. Showering or swimming are both massively more dangerous activities than hiking in bear country. (Edit: actually, if one is hiking in bear country, one still has to worry about people, dogs, and other dangerous creatures. I might worry a little about some arkoudaphobic person trying to shoot a bear, and hitting me, and that sort of thing, but being attacked by a bear is pretty low on the list of valid concerns, even if I'm paranoid enough to still worry a little about that unlikely scenario).
