DEWALT 20V MAX POWERSTACK 5AH Battery - imp.i284638.net/NKOb2O
--------------------------------------------------------------
When the 5Ah DEWALT PowerStack battery was announced, we assumed it would be a more compact version of the 5Ah battery. When we purchased the PowerStack battery, we were surprised to see it was as large as any DEWALT battery with 21700 cells. This changed a bit of our thinking as to what DEWALT was doing with the PowerStack line. With such a large 5Ah battery, this thing must be a beast.
As we rolled through our testing, we were excited to see what the PowerStack could do, but when we used it for the first time. WOW. Not only did we get FlexVolt power from the battery, but it is also half the size of a FlexVolt.
Our volt meter does not lie! You can watch the performance of almost all of the DEWALT batteries and see how well the PowerStack stands up to them all.
We threw the FlexVolt 15Ah battery in there to see how well it would perform on a drill. We are very surprised the drill handled all of this abuse without any issues. A Big Thumbs up to the DCD999.
While the 5Ah DEWALT PowerStack is commanding a premium when purchased, this battery will not disappoint. It will give you all the amps you want and still be able to hand out 5Ah of runtime. The DEWALT 5Ah PowerStack is a beast of a battery.

This has got to be hands down the best video of this type I’ve ever seen. Having the live voltage out really shows the output capacity of each battery and brings the testing to a whole new level under load.

The best method could include amperage as well, because you have to multiply it with the voltage to get the power. But measuring amperage through the connections would be very difficult, maybe realistically possible with a shunt resistor.

Pretty good. Though I’ve noticed in my own drilling that when you hold the drill at a slight angle rather than straight up, as happened here at times, the rubbing of the sides of the bit slow the tool down, and when you get deeper, it can stop. Stopping for a moment and straightening up fixes the problem. If I didn’t already have so many batteries in different sizes, I would buy some Powerstacks, but they’re expensive. Since batteries can last for some time, I suppose I’ll end up waiting for the Powerstack II, which is when mine will be wearing out.

The size is surprising, but not too terrible. It definitely puts out the power. Still hard to beat the 6.0/8.0 for power and runtime. It WILL be interesting to see where Dewalt takes this new battery tech!? 👍✌

I got a two-pack a couple weeks ago. It cost me 400 bucks, which I needed a few weeks to think about before I pulled the trigger. I was convinced with the promice of longer battery-life, as two 6ah flevolt batteries died out on me recently, plus my regular 5ah is reduced. You should try the battery and compare it with others on either the flexvolt advantage grinder, hole hawg or circular saw

increased run time is a lie. as a matter of fact pouch cells have lower life longevity than cylindrical cells. just look at your phone battery. The only thing powerstack is good for voltage drop, and an immediate push of current vs cylindrical.

The voltage tracking is a great parameter to add in to the physical testing. The older I get the more I want light weight tools that perform. I was hoping the PS 5.0 was going to be smaller than the XR 5.0 but I’ll pick some up next year when they go on sale and see how well they do.

I would support your boards on both sides with the support reasonably close to where you are drilling so you don't get bending/pinching. It's causing problems for you punching through with the forstner. You could also just set the 4x on the floor and not punch all the way through. It's similar to an unsupported/freehand cut with a circular saw. You'll have problems getting through the last bit of a 2x even though the saw is plenty powerful to do much more than that.

Great tests, but the price of the new style battery is off par. On some of my auger style bits, they will ONLY work on speed 2, bore all day long, but at speed 3 they lock up EVERY time. Sometimes it's physics about which speed to use on a drill for a particular bit. I always use 5.0 standard batteries. I can get these standard 5.0 batteries for 40 to 50 bucks a piece, so I can just buy a bunch, vs the $235 of the new style batter for just one. Everything has a special use case though. Keep up the good work.

As long as there is the same number of cells in the battery pack the lower capacity will always have higher discharge cells and those have more power assuming they are using the same cell formate. The compact 3ah will outpower the compact 4ah and the 6ah will outpower the 8ah. Samsung 21700 30t cells vs 40t cells. The higher the capacity of a cell the lower power (amp discharge rate) it will have. This is why they don’t use 3.5ah 18650cells and 5ah 21700 cells.

You are right at the end, I am really excited to see the new tech in the flexvolts. Just think of a 12ah flexvolt half the size of the 9ah I am all 9ah flexvolt and its just fine, but dang I would love to be able to get more amps with less weight/size. I bet we will see something next year because it was a year between 2 and 5 ah batteries. I doubt they will do more than 5ah with 20v next because power wise its fine and seems to push the limit of 20v anyway. Its already comparable to the 8ah 60v But they really need more power out of their 60vs for that line so people dont have to buy a 15ah just to max usage, but more importantly, to run their 120v line of products that may expand, being able to get more power out of each flexvolt is key to longevity of use, performance, and the reputation of that line, which already needs 2 60vs to work.

I see DeWalt has no fear of making a lot of diferent batteryes, but I don't see the no. one priority, 20V max @ 2.4 or 2.5 Ah power stack and 12max @ 4Ah with 3 x 21700 cells ( like Hilti and Metabo have), much more interesting then 5Ah with 6 x 18650 cells like a 24V from Kobalt/Hilti/Flex grey. Sure Bosch and Milwaukee use 6 x 18650 with 3 in the grip, and Makita also with 6 outside the grip, but 3 x 21700 are lighter, more compact, and good up to 40-44A with good cells, and if the 2 -3Ah packs good up to 20-23A can so-so handle DCD 701, then a 4Ah with 3 x 21700 good up to 40-44A is more then good enough.

Interesting test, BUT TOO MANY UNACCOUNTED FOR VARIABLES to consistently come to a definitive comparisons. Examples of probably unaccounted for variables: Age / number of charge cycles on each battery. (Relative internal resistance as a function of size, current draw, temperature / heating, aging of battery chemistry as a function of charging cycles … and so on …) Binding due to not having the drill perpendicular. Progressive dulling of cutting edges. Temperature of motor. Temperature of battery as cut progresses. When I use my pole-saw with 20v vs FlexVolt the performance is night vs day. The larger FlexVolts can get the saw rather hot and not just the motor. Also having a sharpened chain vs one that has been used hard for a day is also a day vs night performance comparison. Liked the test, but hard to draw anything more than generic conclusions.

Here's my 'two cents': 1) The 5ah PowerStack is way bigger in size & price than expected. I'd rather use my 12ah FlexVolt with the same power & 240% more runtime!! 2) DeWalt should redeem itself by introducing a FlexVolt PowerStack (FlexStack?)!!

Not practical to use flexi on a drill. Better suited for the dropsaw, tracksaw etc. 1st gen powerstack better for smaller skins, 12v compatible??? output is more important that runtime. Recip/sabresaw is a power hungry tool. IMHO 😏 Thank you for schooling the people👍
