I'm happy to say that I attended this show and I'm so glad that I did. I'd started watching the WWF in 1989, Summerslam was the first show I watched actually!! On Sky One here in England. Wembley stadium was about 45 minutes from my house at the time by public transport. A brilliant show and I'm surprised it's the only big PPV show that's ever happened in England.

1. Of course Bret made the match awesome, but I'll say that the fact that the Bulldog was able to hold up his end and make the match as much of a masterpiece as it was shows that he can be credited to being a great "follower". The match wouldn't have been so great if it involved those less capable of having a good match, gassed or clean. 2. During his 1994-1997 run, I wish the Bulldog had a second run with the Intercontinental Belt, preferably during his heel run in Camp Cornette.

I remember meeting Davey personally. He was very nice and took the time to answer some questions that I was interested to find out about--e.g.--when Ozzy Osborne escorted him and Dynamite Kid to the ring, if they were afraid that Ozzy would bite poor Matilda's head off. Davey laughed and said, "Actually Ozzy was more nervous than we were" and implied that it was likely due to Ozzy not being used to that type of audience.

It was sad to hear Davey Boy had so many issues at the time as he and Bret delivered one of the greatest matches ever. Not only did Bret have to play the Heel to Davey Boy's Babyface but had to carry him for most of it. Respect to the Hitman for that. Also sad to think just 10 years later Davey was gone. Watched once, will watch again! Rethought my original comment, and concluded that this more than useful for new wrestlers than to understand pacing, storytelling and how to go over whilst having lost, but also how to make a match interesting without continual high spots, and how to have an amazing match with someone not up to par.
@ziahamm16033 жыл бұрын
When some people try to downplay Brets accomplishments in the ring or claim he was overrated my simple answer is for them watch this match. Bret is shall we say, not too shy about blowing his own trumpet, but when it comes to this match its fully justified IMO.
@ziahamm16033 жыл бұрын
@ShadowAngel go back and read my comment again. It related to in ring ability. Besides I'm pretty sure he was a bigger draw than HBK and Diesel so your comment is complete and utter nonsense as well.
@ziahamm16033 жыл бұрын
@ShadowAngel revisionist history I see. You tell yourself what you need to bud. Its common knowledge that Bret drew more than Diesel and Shawn. Plus Bret had a strong presence with the international markets and probably was the most popular WWF wrestler overseas until Stone Cold came along. There is a reason why Vince put the title on him 5 times (though I dont count the 1 day title reign after the final 4 PPV as that was merely transitional) He obviously must have succeeded in some regard if that happened so your comment that he 'failed hard' so many times holds no water.
@jameswarner58783 жыл бұрын
Hart v Perfect the year prior was a superior match, but Hart v Bulldog had a far superior build and more on the line. It's similar to Hogan v Warrior, the match itself wasnt the greatest main event of all time but the bulld and what was on the line makes it one of, if not the greatest main event in Wrestlemania history... no matter what the WWE polls say.
@pjay2133 жыл бұрын

Bret did the exact same thing with getting Stone Cold completely over. A phenomenal match with the double turn to boot. He was spot on when it came to matches and what people needed to see in a match.

The greatest match in SummerSlam history let alone wrestling. Also Bret I’m fooked. Bret Hart is the innovator of the ladder match. Without Bret, there’s no ladder match. There’s no TLC. This is a great revisiting of one of the greatest matches of all time. Bret deserves tremendous accolades for everything he did & endured in this match. Bret & Davey were 2 of the 3 best wrestlers to come out of Stampede ( R.I.P.) & you know Stu was very proud of what he witnessed here. The HF & The BD's had the best tag team matches in WWF history, so it was great to see how they progressed in singles bouts. Allen Coage claimed he saw Davey & Dynamite allegedly inject Matilda with steroids, so I lost all respect for them as human beings. Looking at the performer only, Davey was like Scott Steiner- ridiculously gifted as an athelete for his size. Could have been the world champion & the face of the co. had his head been on straight. With the details behind this match, Davey didn't deserve to win, but for nostalgia it was always a great memory to see him reach his peak here in his homeland. R.I.P. Davey

I absolutely love the Hitman and his matches are as good as he says they are, and I know all wrestlers have egos but there is something about Bret's that is just really annoying and probably half truthful, i know there were hitman fans but the UK loved the British Bulldog and for him to say the UK fans really wanted to cheer for him which may be true, but high unlikely, is kind of annoying to hear, still love Bret's matches, but that ego is hard to digest sometimes lol
