WWF King of the Ring 97 took place in Providence, Rhode Island on June 8th 1997. The PPV featured the semi-finals and finals of the annual King of the Ring tournament (this year featuring Ahmed Johnson, Mankind, Jerry Lawler and Triple H) along with a WWF Championship match featuing Faarooq vs The Undertaker. A special grudge match also took place when WWF Tag Team Champions Shawn Michaels and Steve Austin decided to face eachother in a singles bout, a bout that only happened because the initial Bret Hart vs Shawn Michaels match was cancelled.
This video review of the 1997 WWF King of the Ring looks at every match from the show. This upload is also a continuation of the Wrestling Bios "Reliving The War" series.

Maybe I'm just getting old, but Shawn Michaels trying to calm that young man down and get him up the ramp so his mom can get him, that hits me right in the feels. Shawn didn't need to do that. He could have let security handle it. He obviously saw that the young man had Downs Syndrome (I think) and made the choice to help. Legit, Real-Life Hero stuff right there. Steve Austin vs Shawn Michaels on this show was an underrated gem. Just think how great the Wrestlemania 14 main event could of been if Austin's neck wasn't injured or Shawn's back. WM 14 was pretty damn good I thought...... Wasn't EPIC but it was very entertaining. Austin finally gets his hands on Shawn and literally kicks him in the ass you think Tyson is gonna cheat but Austin hits Shawn with the stunner Tyson counts 123 Austin wins. Shawn comes to yells at Tyson and Tyson then knocks him out and lays an Austin 3:16 shirt over his face signaling the NEW ERA....... I thought it was satisfying.

I think on one of the HHH's DVDs, they talked about him winning the 97 KOTR and Vince McMahon wanted HHH to put on the crown and HHH said it looked "goofy" or something like that so he just smashed it over Mankind. The next night on RAW, he was given another crown but he once again smashed Mankind with it. I could be wrong about this info but it is a fun little trivia note.

@@mikeroagreschen5350might be an unpopular opinion, but I think the screwy finish was actually good. @@hittheswitch9394 yeah, during the “Attitude Era” I was in high school and wrestling was very popular at the time. I think it’s like anything though. It goes in and out of fashion. Perhaps at some point in the future it will reach the heights of popularity it once had. That may just be wishful thinking. I stopped watching WWE back in the mid 00s. I have tried to get back into it numerous times since then. Only to quickly loose interest. I think one of the problems with the modern product and being a wrestling fan for around 25-30 years. For me Shawn Michaels Vs Stone Cold was the best match of the show even though it had no finish, the finals of the King Of The Ring tournament with Mankind Vs Triple H was also pretty good which led to a series of epic battles. I love Farooq and Undertaker but I don't think their match was special enough as a ppv worthy main event, the only highlight was the stuff with Paul Bearer which was entertaining. All due respect to those two, I think it would have been fine if their match closed out an episode of Raw instead. Looking back at this ppv, I still think it's ten times better than anything WWE has put out recently. Great review and keep up the good work

I feel the same way. Farooq was a strong upper mid career. He shouldn’t have been main eventing a PPV. However there were two other matches that stood out. In Stone Cold VS HBK and the King of The Ring finals. Perhaps that was an issue with Taker as WWF champion. His title defences were often overshadowed by other matches or angles. The same issue would happen the following month at the Canadian Stampede PPV.

I thought it was a good PPV also. However I do think, in hindsight. The Pillman VS Austin match and HBK VS Bret Hart match on the card would have been better. I wonder how that would have effected things moving forward, if Bret goes over do they still have the match at the Survivor Series? I watched this PPV live, it was the first live wrestling PPV I had ever watched. I was sold on everything the WWF was doing at the time. I also loved the ending to the Triple H VS Mankind match. Cementing Foley as a face and a whole different side to Triple Hs character was shown.

@@martynodonnell8467 I loved Mankind. I followed his career for a while before he went to WWF, but I always saw him as a heel. I could never picture him as a face, probably something to do with being a rediculously huge taker fan (like cheering the million dollar team on when I saw him debut and just wreck the dream team). Needless to say, my 8 yr old ass was INFURIATED when Hogan reclaimed the belt at Tuesday In Texas...

Fantasy booking. Hart goes over Michaels at King of The Ring 97, there match doesn’t take place at Survivor Series. Hart works out a deal with McMahon to stay in WWF. A 3rd match between Hart and HBK takes place at WM14. For the WWF championship. No epic rise for Stone Cold. How different would things have played out then.

@@HabsMike25 the presence of Bret Hart still being around would affect Austin’s rise. There also would be no Mr McMahon, Vinces heel character to play off, as this was born out the “The Montreal Screwjob”. This character was a huge part of getting Austin over during his run. Austin’s injury was important to getting him over, ironically, he would need to change his wrestling style, which more fit the Austin character and it’s during this time Austin, ironically, push to the top began.

That spot where Stone Cold holds the ropes open for Michaels after the fan incident is my all-time favorite moment of wrestling professionalism. Stone Cold shows his respect for Shawn while smirking the whole time like he may not be perfectly sincere, and Michaels plays into the psychology of the match by cautiously refusing the gesture. Couple of all-time legends right there. ...wish the wildebeests had shown that kind of professionalism toward my dad that day in the gorge. He was just trying to give me a nice surprise!
