The assessment/entrance exam to a Taiwanese university is a reading test, not a speaking, conversation, or listening test. Therefore, the words used in the test are mostly related to academic topics and supposed to be more difficult than verbal languages, just like the reading test in TOEFL or IELTS exams. Aside from the reading test, the high school students also have to take 2 listening tests which are more conversational though. However, to be reliable, the assessment should cover listening, speaking, reading, and writing questions to fairly assess the students' actual English proficiency for university study.

How to get a girlfriend Normal people: Hi baby. Me: Hi Okapi.
Well, we will try to simplify when we talk or having conversations with others. However, we still need certain amount of vocabulary words to read the letter we received; especially business letters that most US and Canada businesses contact with their clients.

I totally agree with u. Those questions in exam u can tell they are for academic use instead for just simple daily use. Therefore the correctness is important too. U cannot compare the difficulty for academic English with what you use in daily conversation.

The point is that this is NOT good English, it is Chinglish using difficult English words.@@thippharatwu9317

@@nancyyang5431 Could you kindly define Chinglish and point out the so-called Chinglish sentences. I'm looking forward to your reply, thanks.
So when I went to high school in US, my English teacher was so amazed at my grammar and writing.... Mine was even better than many American kids... But my hearing and speaking sucked. Good thing I was thrown into a high school where had no Chinese. Then when started to work, no Chinese in our company, either. That's how you improve the hearing and speaking.

Hearing =You're going to have a hearing in court. I think you should've used "listening" is more accurate.

Don't use then and when at the same time.

@@matthewlo55 I was about to comment on OP's use of "hearing" too :p "Hearing" can also refer to the ability to perceive sound, e.g. My grandpa won't wear his hearing aids.

What do you mean by, where had no Chinese, there is a grammatical error there, and also the meaning of the sentence is unclear. If you mean that no one knew how to speak Chinese in your high school, then you should change another way to convey what you mean.

Also, it is ungrammatical to use had after where in your sentence, it should be ‘where there was something’
