These days reviewers can destroy products without knowing much about it. 1) the blinking light is a warning that the battery power is low. 2) the switch behind the batteries is to activate the shutdown script (you only have to set this once, but still have to input a script aswel, again only once). 3) complaining about the fact that you have to install Raspberry pi and software makes it sound as a negative. The product is build around a raspberry pi so installs is just something you have to deal with. Know what you buy. It's like reviewing a manual-shift car and complain that you have to shift gears yourself. Could have just said: want out of the box gaming, get for example a Bittboy. Not scared of doing a bit of setup yourself get a GPi.

In retropie you can try different emulators or emulator settings for the games that are having problems. Builds are different, but in most emulation station setups, you can repeatedly press "a" as the game is booting to access a menu that will allow you to select between the emulators you have installed for the platform in question. Again, depending on how your build is setup, there should also be scripts for adding libretro (retroarch) cores and other emulators.

Two important notes about Pi emulation FIRST you should overclock to smooth out performance on a Zero but SECOND if you just get the most powerful model of Pi (3 B+) it will run basically everything perfectly without that You will need overclocking for N64, Dreamcast, and a couple others to run closer to full speed Making the 3 B+ portable is a bit harder, but still a good solid option for home and portable play
@sagichdirdochnicht46535 жыл бұрын
Of course the B+ runs games better. That's why literally everyone would use it for stationairy Emulation. Fitting it inside this formfactor without desoldering basically the whole I/O would be quite hard. Plus, there is like zero Airflow - so overheating can get a serious problem. And that's pretty much why the zero runs inside those projects. Way smaller formfactor. But it's still pretty well suited for Gameboy, NES and for the most Part Snes.
@DennisRamberg5 жыл бұрын
This device is perfect (even insanely good) for tinkering. Yet quite a terrible option for people looking for a "out of the box" experience. The good thing is that you can install custom emulation cores that runs very well with the pi zero (I don't know if this is the case with the pre-configuration SD card that Wulff Den is trying out). It seems however that the device would need some kind of Voltage/Ampere sensor for the battery compartment to enable "low battery" warning, and even a safe shutdown when reaching critical levels. I could see myself actually modifying the bootup sequence, adding performance efficient emulation cores etc. But this will take hours to configure and not something that people "just wanting to buy a product" would like. So, I applaud you for making an awesome review, because it really looks at the product from the perspective of a normal consumer.

I like making my own builds in retropie, including customized themes, so I'm probably gonna pick up the gpi case. I'll also probably be installing my own litium ion rechargeable battery because relying on AAs sounds terrible. It's worth noting that the pi 0 is relatively new and the retropie images aren't as optimized for it yet. It's possible that some of the emulation slowdown and sound issues you experienced will be patched out in future updates. Not a great problem for this to have at launch, but it's kinda the nature of emulation. Everything that works well now didn't work well at some point. And for a good gameboy recommendation, I'd totally suggest Crystalis if you haven't played it before. Especially for gameboy color. It's a fun action rpg that has some game mechanics that I haven't really seen replicated since.

Except for the battery draining issue all the complaints mentioned aren't really related to the GPi case itself, but to Retropie. Retropie is no out of the box experience, that is true. You have to put some effort into tinkering around with it and solve all problems yourself. But when you are willing to take the effort it's a really rewarding experience. If you want a more out of the box experience with a Pi get RECALBOX (already comes with the word "box"). But you do have a point there: setting up or changing the emulators on a RetroPie build is anything but easy. You have to edit a config file and know what you're doing. When I get my GPi case I will start tinkering around and maybe upload an image file (without any ROMS of course) with a nice setup. :) The build quality of that thing looks far superb to other portable emulation machines like the whole Dingoo portables (Like the New BittBoy). Taking the price of $69 into account, there is not much competition. Thanks for sharing you insights though. FYI: The safe turn off switch in the battery compartment enables the shut down script. If you set it to "off" the power button will just kill the power. PS: What's a PSP? ;)

I have a Raspberry Pi Zero and it's an "okay" emulation system with many flaws. The biggest problem is that it uses a single core processor and even though spec to spec it should run older console games flawlessly, it really doesn't. From my personal use, it's good for Gameboy, NES, Genesis (Mega Drive) & TurboGraphx (PC Engine). It will run SNES but this is where I start to run into slowdown issues, just like you mentioned in the video. My suggestion is to only use a Raspberry Pi Zero if you need it for a small form factor build, such as the Retroflag GPi or other small form factor option. Hope that helps!

@jamescorrall65355 жыл бұрын
I'm sure someone else has already said it but the issues you had with the batteries are probably because the Pi is more fussy about its voltages than an old Gameboy would be, closer those batteries are to dead the further they'll wander away from the full charge voltage. Also a lot of the other issues you've raised could be fixed either with a better/different OS or with the next generation of Pi 0. This also means that if it uses the same I/O pin layout it may be able to do something more fancy with the next Pi update.

On the retropie wiki if you look up the console it will tell you which emulator to run for each console some are optimized specifically for the pie 0 which make a world of difference

The little red light flashes when the batteries are low iirc. Also it's been some time now so there are a lot of ready made images out there that all you have to do is load your roms and your good to go. if it's a pi zero w you have the option to load them over wifi, or if your on linux you can just insert your sd card into your pc and load them that way too. For game boy / game boy color I recommend Warioland: Super Mario Land 3, and Monster Rancher Battle Card. For NES I recommend RC Pro-AM and Holy Diver.
@vincepale5 жыл бұрын
I don't think you're going to see the shutdown script on the SD card because you're not looking at the actual "hard drive" of the Pi. That's an EXT4 partition that Mac and Windows won't see. hopefully they'll come out with a newer pi zero that is twice as powerful in a year or so and at that point it may be worthwhile to revisit this case. Awesome thorough review.
@vidagogo98295 жыл бұрын
Vince Pale The point of the RPi Zero is to be a computer that’s less powerful to be even smaller and cheaper. It has a single core 1GHz with 512MB of RAM. Twice as much still won’t even satisfy those who are picky about performance anyways.
@vincepale5 жыл бұрын
@@vidagogo9829 I hear you. It's just that the Pi Zero was originally released in 2015, and revised in 2017. I know we're not following Moore's Law as much anymore, but I still think we'll see a revision with more power soon enough.

Its true that some games shouldnt have any problems with the raspberry pi but it really depends on the software revision and what emulator that is running, which can be easily configured in the menu or the raspiconfig.

Seems like you need to use Eneloops or Ikealoops/Amazon Basics Loops. Do some people here even know about rechargeable AA cells? The advantage of using NiMH AA cells is mainly the voltage stability. While alkaline AAs will go down in voltage rapidly, NiMH AAs have a very stable voltage until it just stops working, which is great for a portable consoles. Some links. I'm getting the retroflag case, as I don't have any issues configuring everything and the emulation is good enough for me. Any bugs in the emulators will get fixed and when they do, I'm able to update them on the Raspberry. Also when a new a new Raspberry Zero is release you'll be able to update it, or if the form factor is just slightly different use a 3d printer to print a new 'cartridge' for it. The only issue I have with this case is the lack of availability, seems there were just enough units made to be sent to reviewers. When I got the Gameboy as a kid I enjoyed playing 'Bart Simpson's Escape from Camp Deadly' and 'Xenon 2' and for multiplayer, get a second game boy, two copies of 'Tennis' and a link cable.

Regarding the safety switch in the battery compartment, it's probably there in case you need to go into a recovery mode of some sort and you're using the micro usb.
@alasuisi5 жыл бұрын
if it's the same with respect to the other retroflag cases the "safe shutdown" switch is a mode selector which dictates the behaviour of the on/off switch, if set to safe shutdown, flicking the on/off switch will call the execution of a script which terminates the os and then will cut the power; if set the other way, it will simply "cut the power" to the board (don't ask me why someone would like that option). Also i think they sould have included te possibility to use a raspberry compute module instead of the 0, its a SODIMM form factor with the processing power of the raspberry pi B3+ (which will work like a charm with all those little emus)

I feel liike this sort of product is for me. I like tweaking the emulators to get them to run well. BUT the major problem is the price. Like, $50 for that case would go far in making me want to buy it. It just... until there's that price drop (and I get more tips on Twitch) I can't say I'm looking forward to dropping that much on whats effectively a shell.
@8BitCerberus5 жыл бұрын
A shell ($20-$30), plus a screen ($20-$30), plus a controller ($20+), plus all the work done for you so you don't have to solder anything or dremel an original GB case or require a 3D printer for anything. $70 for a ready-made case that is this well engineered is very reasonable. I've seen DIY kits that are several times more expensive, and you still have to supply your own Pi, and do your own soldering.
@JackBlackadder5 жыл бұрын
Not entirely true - You know we dont have to pay that much for a screen ($8-12), the board for the controller that the Pi attaches to is about $20, and the buttons for $5-ish. Soldering... not a big deal. Dremeling... Not a big deal. Not to mention his criticism of the batteries and screen were very much valid. If they switch to an internal battery pack... maybe I'd find it worth it. Also, just because some retailers charge far more doesn't mean cheaper sources don't exist. And the fact I'm already having to buy a Pi-zero when I have a Pi-3 sitting right here? You might find it worth it, and that's cool. I'm not here to argue - he just said to tell him in the comments if this sort of thing is for us, and imho it is. Just not at that price point.

They should do one for the Raspberry Pi compute module. That would probably even run games up to the GameCube smoothly
@z3razerviper5 жыл бұрын
The on off safe shutdown switch in the battery compartment most likely is to change the mode of the main power switch. I know on the other retro flag cases for the power switch to work as a safe shutdown you needed the safe shutdown set to yes and the script installed.

I can see how installing an operating system who would be frustrating for someone's first time, but I've done it like 15 times including windows and random Linux installations that I put on a flash drive. It's not that difficult just use etcher, I recommend it because it has the simplest layout with the fewest options, automatically sorts to the drives plugged into your system so you don't accidentally install Linux on your main SSD. It will only show up drives with a low importance score, AKA wiped drives or drives with nothing or practically nothing on them.
