I remember when I saw a Game Gear the first time. I was sold on it! Color, back lit screen? TV adapter? I’m in! I just KNEW it was going to be better than Game Boy. I bought one and about 4 or 5 games (that I still have) and loved it. I also had to buy the AC adapter because I’d have gone broke trying to keep batteries in it!! If these things were local and had a better selection or organization of games, I would pick one up. They look so cool!

Wow, this brings up memories of the Christmas that I got my Game Gear. I was SO EXCITED to get it as our household didn’t have any SEGA system consoles up till then. And I too loved me Game Gear back then (1991 ?). But one of the biggest headaches with the thing clearly was the ridiculous amount of batteries it took. What was it like 6 or 8 AA’s? Anyways, thanks Bob for doing a review on this little guy. I was super curious to see what it ended up looking like in person.

I had a petition to get Sega to improve the Game Gear micro. Unfortunately, it bombed at only 20 votes. The improvements I wanted the GGM to have were a bigger size, more built-in games, a cartridge slot so you could play additional games directly from their cartridges, and AV support so you could play games on your TV screen.

I mean I want one because I'm a bit obsessed with portable systems, but for only like 1 cm vertically and 2 cm horizontally (plus it is actually thinner in the z axis, which is arguably the most important dimension to keep small), the gameboy micro has a drastically better library, and almost double the screen size. Plus with an emulator flashcart, the GBA is beefy enough to emulate all game gear and master system games. I agree it is super neat and I want one real bad, but for that price you could pick up a gb micro plus flashcart, just use yiur phone like the average person.

I remember my Game Gear! My god that thing chewed through batteries like you wouldn't beleive... I had Sonic, Power Rangers, Jungle Book and I think there was a game cart that came bundled with it? It had a racing game on it which I played a lot. Cool system, but yeah barely portable considering the weight of the damned thing. I got a Gameboy Pocket in red when those came out in the UK and spent an unhealthy number of hours playing Star Wars, Jurassic Park, Wave Race and Pokemon Blue. Oh and don't forget Links Awakening! The Gameboy was such a killer system back in the day, too much nostalgia. If I could find one in red (in decent condition) I'd buy it in a heart beat but they seem to be pretty rare these days. I have a yellow one and hope that'll continue to last for years to come yet.

you also never have to worry about the battery crapping out since they're AAA's and not a rechargeable. for items like this when the batteries are so small, they don't last nearly the length of time as larger batteries so once it craps out, you lose the emulator. with triple A's you know if it breaks it's a board issue and not the batteries. rechargeable batteries don't always make sense.

As a size of this and with only 4 games per version, I feel it's more like a gimmick toy and should cost like $15-$20, for a $50 they should make bit bigger with 1,5" screen if they wanted to keep really small, or 1,8", and include all 16 games and only change the shell color...
