I would really love a 'Rise of Stone Cold' arc. Going from King of the Ring 96 until WM14. It's a bit long, slightly under two years, but contains a lot of gold. The product changed dramatically in those two years and you also have Austin vs Hart Foundation, the Bret vs Shawn tension and the eventual Screwjob, the formation of DX, the gangware and the debut and/or development of The Rock, Mankind, HHH, Goldust, Pillman.

Fuck thats good, I was thinking of asking if theyd ever cover HHH/HBK's feud. So Summerslam 2002, Survivor Series 2002, Armageddon 2002, Royal Rumble 2004, Wrestlemania XX and Bad Blood 2004. A perfect span of time to document the smackdown 6 era, Brocks rise to the main event, Rocks last full year in the company, first elimination chamber, Eddie's title run, Takers burial and deadman return, and of course the royal rumble win and main event that the company cant speak about. Then on the other side you have so much bollocks. Torrie Wilsons dad, MAIN EVENT BOB HOLLY, Brocks winding down and not giving a fuck, his goldberg match, documenting Benoits lackluster world champ feud with Kane and dicking around with Eugene, Eugene himself.

“Underfaker” Brian Lee buried himself for 3 years in one more way too ( as told by Jim Cornette ). Before this match he went out of his way to tell Vince that he could start for WWF “immediately” if needed. Vince asked him what about his remaining “Smoky Mountain” dates & LEE told Vince he didn’t care about those and would blow them off. Vince told Lee “Great Pal!” , but then immediately Vince phoned Cornette & told him all about Lee’s unscrupulous offer. This both soured Vince as to Lee’s loyalty & caused Cornette to fire him from Smoky Mountain as well. Down the road away’s , LEE would use the real Undertakers shoot name to police, causing Mark Callous to have to appear in court to clear things up. This resulted in this friendship being ended as well. I’m a tiny bit hazy , it was either false ID to the police or to a landlord/creditor in who to Bill for a large $ transaction. It also could very possibly be both as I have both of those floating around in my head from hearing the story (Cornette again).

Simon Wizado not only scummy but possibly career ending for taker. Imagine it went through that Lee was Mark Callaway, now taker is on his way to an event and they stop him for a bench warrant next thing you know he misses the event or PPV and now takers has to face the ramifications of either being pushed down the card or shelved. I’m being hyperbolic but point stands it’s so sinister to do such a thing like that instead of owning up to your mistake

Fun fact about the Hart/Hart cage match: the extensive escape attempts were done instead of drawing blood. In Bret's book, he said they considered it but thought the sight of blood would traumatize Helen, which is understandable. Instead of blood, Bret and Owen chose to have multiple dramatic escape attempts to fire up the crowd. I agree that the match should have had more wrestling off the start rather than immediately trying to leave.

I think they got caught in the build up and basically wanted Bret/Austin from WM13, but in a cage. Which probably would have terrible since Owen isn't really a brawler, weapons would be tricky to implement, and New Gen means no blood.

Personally, I think the OSW crew missed the mark on this one. I never saw it as a blood feud as much as I did a Sibling Rivalry on steroids (figuratively). The door escapes was more representing just how badly Owen wanted to beat his older brother. His obsession wasn’t hurting Bret, it was stepping out of Bret’s shadow and proving that he was the best in the family. Winning by any means necessary was the only thing that mattered and was the primary concern. Hurting Bret was secondary, which he had no problem doing so long that he won.

@JackgarPrime
@JackgarPrime Жыл бұрын
@@bortgunn9079 In a general storytelling sense, yes, you're correct. But in the sense of "What would happen if this was a real contest and both guys wanted to win", having them both diving for the door to get out and win ASAP is the logical route there. Not to mention that this is for the world title, it's not just a normal grudge match. The most important object in the world as far as these guys should be concerned is on the line for whoever wins, and they'd do anything to have it. Plus Bret, during this whole feud, wanted to avoid hurting Owen as long as possible, so he'd also want to get the win as quick and painlessly as he could, to avoid the increasing possibility of harming his brother.

I get what they're talking about with the escape rules of the cage match really conflicting with the tone of the Bret vs. Owen feud, and that's the real fundamental flaw with the concept that the WWF introduced. If you watch any of the old NWA stuff, or even earlier WWF, the whole point of a cage match was originally, "Nobody gets in, nobody gets out, we're gonna settle this fair and square". So changing the whole point of the cage match to be about getting out of the cage instead of being stuck in was always a pretty counterproductive idea. That being said, given what it was, Bret & Owen still tore the house down, and if you're going to judge the match on its own merits, I think it's every bit a classic, 5-star encounter as their Mania match.

As OSW's video game reenactment showed, the reality of the situation is silly, but it can be sold if positioned right. I think the escape should be a door OR over the top. The theatrical way this is presented is for the face to make the climb, and the heel to take the easy way. Well that's silly and makes the face just look stupid. If there is only a door escape, each wrestler would start in a neutral corner. Even if each runs right for the door, it still compels contact. If up and over is the only method, a wrestler would not want to take a coin flip on being a faster climber, and would try to go incapacitate their opponent. Plus this arrangement yields unique spots, so you don't risk recycling spots.

Fun fact: the cage escape rule was created by Bruno Sammartino (I believe) when he was booked to lose to someone but didn't want to 'do the job' So the opponent escaped the cage, Bruno lost, but never got pinned

Love you guys. Long time fan but only started posting recently. I know there are much bigger wrestling fans out there than me but I'm almost more fascinated by the stories backstage than the performances. You do this because you love it and you make us love it. You tell the stories inside and outside the ring, the build up and the after effects. The nostalgia from gaming, movies and music appeal to the heart stings and the intro's stoke the crowd for a rip roaring show. I know that's what you're aiming for but just making sure you know it's appreciated. The joy you get from laughing at each others jokes is warm and infectious. I discovered you while sitting at home feeling like cr@p after chemo. Your back catalogue, and a few other youtubers, helped keep me happy and positive. Thanks for keeping me company. To add to the list of Asian wrestlers who didn't have that theme: Taka Michinoku had a pretty rocking theme during the Attitude Era. Used a koto in its opening parts, and throws in a shakuhachi later, but it wasn't that stereotypical Japanese riff, and it even had some pretty good guitar work when you get a bit further in! Apparently he still uses variations of it in Japan to this day. Must've really loved it!

But my favorite OSW reviews are those years ... It's so fun haha. Moe and Mable, lex express, Doink (who was amazing when Matt Borne portrayed him but terrible after in these years), Double J, Bush Wackers, Undertaker w Paul Bearer etc. Omg. lol. One of the problems for the cage match was the fact the WWF was trying to downplay violence at the time. Bret and Owen were ordered not to use the cage as a weapon and to not bleed, so they decided to add excitement with a ton of near-escapes. They still did way too many escape attempts, and it's still a terrible way to settle a title grudge, but there's at least a reason why it's the way it is.

OOC once again proving why he's the best boi. As for the cage match. Owen said he can beat Bret again, but he clearly didn't care how he did it. He proved he could pin Bret at Mania, why would he need to do that again? He wanted the belt, the one thing Bret had over him. The one thing that, in Owen's eyes, soured his win at Mania. Take that away from him then and only then, Owen will truly be the King of Hearts. Bret, More angry then wanting to murder his brother over this, just wants to beat him fair and square. I'm not usually a fan of Escape cage matches myself, But I can easily put Bret/Owen as one of my favorites.

The Bret Owen match is really simple ring phycology. Owen already beat Bret but it was a fluke, and he knew it so he got help, ie. King of the ring. He wanted to get the belt to prove he was the king of harts at any cost. Bret didn't want to hurt his brother.... How is the story of the match hard to grasp? They did a cage match so Bret didn't have to bury Owen.

No need to put down Bruce Hart. In the truly technical sense, he's responsible for the Hollywood Blondes and subsequently Steve Austin's position in WCW, which of course, led him to WWF. Bruce may be more influential in that way than anyone really wants to believe but its true. Its kind of like pointing out that we wouldn't have the Rolling Stones if it wasn't for Brian Jones. Bruce Hart is an underrated asset to the business and that's the bottom line !

Abe "Knuckleball" Schwartz actually debuted as MVP. He only kept the name for a few weeks but that was long enough to be listed as such in the UK's 1994 WWF Merlin Sticker Album. So, there were TWO wrestlers called 'MVP' in the WWF/E! I'm surprised at Vince for that but he does think that us wrestling fans have short memories.

Clearly, Montell Vontavius Porter is the better MVP of the two and solid "boy stable" material. And Vince has never respected the memory or intelligence of the fans, despite kayfabe being officially dead for 20+ years and fans being much harder to fool.
