My buddy is a venue owner: He prefers the small metal shows because the fans clean up their mess. The fans know the music is already hard to book in, and don’t want to ruin it. So they keep it clean. Parking lot, and in the inside of the venue. His opinion of his experience. Not mine and not yours. He doesn’t like edm concerts/raves but they make mad cash. Only issue is the literal metric tonnes of garbage the edm people leave. Not to mention left over drugs he needs to watch out for. I’m an “EDM” fan who happened to wander onto this video, and I can say with certainty you are right. For those of us that were into it before the big wave of dubstep/festivalEDM hit the states (dating myself here), what the scene has turned into now is totally unappealing and shameful. But it rakes in the cash. Anyway the point of this boomer rant is to say it’s a trade off. If a scene gets big enough to consistently fill large festivals, it’s probably lost some of its purity. Better to have more shows in smaller venues with fans that actually care imo. So be thankful if that’s what’s happening.

This is how most people think festivals work. They think they can just sell tickets and then pay everyone, while pocketing whatever is left. That's really not how any of this works. Most festivals don't turn a real profit for 5-10 years. Even massive corporations like Live Nation lose money on some of their events. Corporations are literally designed to maximize profits while minimizing costs, so if they can't do it without losing money for several years what do guys like Vega think they're going to do differently? The only way to actually do it responsibly, independently, is by starting out having a party with bands on a private farm for a weekend. Built it from the ground up. Invest everything you make back into making the next year bigger and better. You can at least cover your own costs without much risk, and in about 5-10 years you could have a real festival, with a real company, a real team who know what they're doing, a real audience who want to come back every time, and a reputation with bands that want to see it work.
@christopherconard28315 ай бұрын
This is why after a lot of disaster festivals in the late 60's/70's promoters were required to put up a massive bond before receiving permission for a show. It was already required in some places, but was often overlooked. A lot of "Yeah, yeah. We got that, don't worry." Only to find unpaid vendors, bands, and staff bailing at the last minute. There is also event insurance. This is a policy taken out before the first ticket is sold. For example, if you have a show that has 50,000 capacity with a break even mark of 30K tickets sold, but you only sell 15K they will cover the difference and make sure everyone gets paid. It sounds like the promoters did none of this.

I am wondering how all of this actually happened. The fact he could downgrade to such a little venue probably means that he only sold like 1000 tickets instead of the expected 13000? This obviously would lead to a huge lack of funding. But I don't understand how such a big miscalculation in regards to ticket sales was possible when this festival already took place in multiple years before 2024.
@christopherconard28315 ай бұрын
I've mentioned in another post, there is event insurance. It covers exactly this problem. I'm guessing he decided to skip it. He probably had a good idea when he started, but had no idea what he was getting into. If he's done shows at bars/theaters (I'm assuming this isn't his first) he saw how much a multi day outdoor event could make at was blinded by dollar signs. Unfortunately upscaling from 5,00-1,000 person indoor shows to something like this brings on a lot of new problems. Parking, security, where do people go at night, where are you keeping that many band members and their crews all become major concerns and you can't just wing it. I used to work with a group that organized these sort of things. There is a small army of people required to pull it off. And most of them have a crazy idea about being paid for their time, talents, and effort. Experience has taught everyone involved to get paid up front. Almost everyone has a story about a promoter or organizer who took off either right before, or in the middle of an event.

They flew cross country to play the Whiskey in LA......AT THEIR OWN EXPENSE. It was a pay to play show. They had to but their own tickets for $1500 to resell them. It was a total bust. Cost them thousands of dollars to play in front of less than 200 people with 4 other bands. They chalked it up to gaining experience. My take was, they chalked it up to paying thousands of dollars in travel and food and time to feel like rock stars for a few days. They could have stayed home and got the same feelings and made $42.

I think it was fitting that it was organized through FB. It's exactly how I would expect something coordinated through FB to play out.

4:23 I was about to say, sounds like the promoter didn't pay the venue. Never paid the race track so they bailed. Venue took a risk

Can't wait for the class action on this one. The terms of the ticket purchase, even if they were non-refundable, can be invalidated if what's stated on the ticket is not delivered - or if undue changes/inconveniences occur (for example a venue move of an hour, last minute updates, Saturday being cut short on site & Sunday not being delivered at all)

What is up with these amateur metal promotors! Some kid in a basement thinks it's "rad" to hold a "metal festival"?

Why the hell would you hold a "festival" at a regular theater?! The term festival implies an outdoor event with MULTIPLE stages at the very least.
