Because they want as many views as they can get (literraly kids these days). We old fans of the show are already sold on it. They want to get some newcomers, and if they do, we might get season 7 or 8 of it. There have been times when the comics did that, like when Claremont, cockrum and wein took over, and later grant morrison took over.

Implying that Morph needs to be "nonbinary" is a disservice to the character. I expect Mystique will treated the same from here on out. If all characters that can shape shift are by design nonbinary, then all of them should adapt themselves to look just as plain. Morph was born a boy, why would he want to lose his identity and features of his family, when that's all he has left of them and himself. Turning them into flat, unidentifiable forms and separate from their human ties is homophobic and a very clear comment that the creators of this show don't see nonbinary people as people. Leave it to Disney to ruin a good thing and to use homopbia, racism and sexism to claim their being inclusive.

In the orginal series they never went into Morphs back story, in fact Morph was never supposed to come back after being killed. In the comics Morph was born a white blob with no features, or gender. As Morph got older they took a "all American boy" look to make their parents happy and feel more comfortable around Morph. Morphs natural state is this form in the show and has been in the comics since the 90s. Morph being nonbinary make complete sense. Morph can literally change into anything. In the comics Morph can shapeshift in inanimate objects, animals, humans, alien, creatures, can change their limbs in machine guns and rocket legs. Mystique is gender fluid in comics and has been for some time.

@primuskuhl we are not basing this off the comics. This is a continuing story from the 90s cartoon. I feel what I stated prior is important, too. This wasn't an attempt to make it more like the comics but a poor attempt at being inclusive. Nonbinary people still have an identity, and one they fight for and should be respected for. (Typing this as I listen to "The Floor Show" from Rocky Horror Picture Show.) Shape shifting does not make you Nonbinary or fluid. For some, perhaps, but they would still fight for their individual identity. I would see those characters as more polyamorous. It's okay for them to be heterosexual and also be a shapeshfter. It's okay for Cyclops to come out too. He tries way too hard. We all know he wants to be poly with Jean and Wolverine and that's okay too. Lol. To make such an adjustment to an established series, justifiably needs an episode of backstory and a respectful approach to that conversation. I do not believe it was handled in such a manner.

@primuskuhl watch the BBC's Misfits, it poses a very interesting problem with shape shifting between the sexes as well as what would happen if. If this is a subject of a real conversation, then the story and show should represent that. Otherwise it's just a means of marketing to an audience they ostracized and demean by interpreting the idea as they want to understand it. ("Mansplaining" kind of thing)
