Its funny how in X-Men Apocalypse, Mystique said the students aren't children anymore and that they must fight. And here, she says that they are kids and Charles is risking them for his own ego. Talented Hollywood writers, ladies and gentlemen.
@ShadowSonic22 жыл бұрын
They were trying to force some new internal conflict by making it seem like Xavier has become too full of himself. But the problem is that nothing he does indicates this. So it comes off as forced and empty. Like, they were trying for a Steve Rogers vs Tony Stark thing with Mystique as Steve and Xavier as Stark. It doesn't work without proper characterization and buildup.

And let’s not forget that classic line, “the women have been doing a lot more than the men, so why don’t you change the name to X-Women”
@uglyguy2519 Жыл бұрын
This whole movie is basically characters doing something super ill-advised until something else happens and they do a 180°. Charles is willing to send the team to space in a jet that never went to space before, and have the woman he took in and raised since she was a child risk exposing herself to alien energy, all to score points with the president and the public, which is completely out of character for him. Then, AFTER Jean has a meltdown that endangered lots of young mutants at the party it occurs to him that he should pay more attention to her and whatever the alien energy was about than to fancy ceremonies with politicians. The president trusts Charles and the X-Men enough to ask them to rescue a space shuttle in orbit, and even has a direct line to call them, but one X-man incident is enough for him to cut down all communications and send Mutant Control after them. YOU DON'T ASK PEOPLE YOU TRUST THAT LITTLE TO HELP YOU WITH NASA STUFF. Beast and Magneto are out for Jean's blood after she killed Mistique, even though she was always evidently more powerful than them (remember: she's the one who finished off Apocalypse a decade earlier) and was even more powerful and unstable now with the Phoenix force. But Charles telling them he's sorry and making a speech (something they mocked before, like the video covered) is enough to convince them to to join forces with the X-Men and protect her from super strong aliens, including Vuk, who was unbeatable with part of the Phoenix force at the time and made it very clear that she didn't wish to fight them, only get Jean.

I do hope that when we do eventually see the X-men in the MCU, I at least hope they flesh out Jean's character to be more nuanced, and less affiliated with the Phoenix Force or randomly being tortured her entire life. Although I don't expect her to be a huge character, I would rather prefer to just see her own character, and just like Doug said: "have her be the emotional centre of the group" and just interesting enough to get our investment, for the long term repercussions awaiting her character. Hopefully something similar to how Jean Grey was represented on the 90's X-men Animated Series, or X-men: Evolution (2003).

My thoughts exactly at least have him holding his adopted sister in his arms in her last moments he touches her head showing us the audiences flashbacks of their time together, Charles feels what she's feeling as she is dying that breaks him and causes him to take out his emotions out on everyone by accidentally using his telepathic powers causing everyone to feel the pain something like Logan did almost killing everyone if he can't control his telepathic powers make it darker this can explain how it started connecting with Logan timeline it can make it a gut wrenching explains why Charles blames himself again for losing his sister and he failed again since he killed the x men accidentally making his death much more sadder in Logan

I feel like the bigger problem with adaptations is just that they're focusing on the wrong thing. The thing that made the phoenix saga interesting (for me at least) wasn't the Alien subplots or the power itself, it was how this sudden change affected the characters I cared about. I actually think it would be better to scrap those ideas and have the phoenix be like another personality or something, still, the same powers, just not afraid to use them to their fullest. In doing this you keep the emotional centre more grounded with how it affects the rest of the characters, whilst still being engaging. The goal with the phoenix shouldn't be to save the world from Jean or something that grand, the stakes should be far more personal like save Jean from the phoenix. I'm not going to pretend I know what I'm talking about. these are just my thoughts.
@ScooterinAB3 жыл бұрын
I have to partially disagree. The problem is that none of the attempts to do this storyline established the storyline. It's like the first few episodes of Power Rangers; it just gets right to the action when the original was a slowburn. The Dark Phoenix worked in the comics because people cared about Jean and (as you stated) the other characters affected. But the movies never established Jean as even a two dimensional character let alone one the audiences would care about. To have any chance of working, this needed to be a decades long setup like with the Avengers.
@jacob49203 жыл бұрын

Okay two things that really kind of bothers me about this one, the first the fact both Nightcrawler and Mystique look so close in age when she is his mom. They looks like they could be siblings instead of mother and son. I love Nightcrawler, he was my favorite in the cartoons and I love his look here (mostly because he looks kind of like Rin from Blue Exorcist) but I just feel like it's weird knowing that these two are supposed to be related but they aren't in the movie. Second: I love how Professor X and everyone honored Jean by renaming the school after her, but Mystique just got a funeral and that was it. You'd think she would've gotten a statue or a plaque, or something seeing how Professor X lost his sister. Even Beast was outraged by her death but she doesn't a 'in memory of' item (minus the grave). Those things just always kind of just irked me.

The good news is that this movie gave us some good performances and two fantastic soundtrack albums. The bad news is that the rest of the movie still exists. In all seriousness, though, I don't think Dark Phoenix is that bad, I had some fun with it, but The Last Stand runs circles around it, both in storytelling and overall entertainment value.
@agentofchaos7456 Жыл бұрын
I disagree about the storytelling. Jean in The Last Stand suddenly becomes evil for no real reason. That version of the Phoenix story instead pushes the ableist idea that mentally ill are inherently violent and dangerous. That goes against the entire point of the X-Men franchise.

Ok
@agentofchaos74563 жыл бұрын
Partly, true. According to the cast, crew, and Chris Claremont (writer of the comic) the movie isn’t the full story. It is meant to be an origin story about how Jean becomes Phoenix and she doesn’t become Phoenix until at the end of the movie.
@DJtheBlack-RibbonedRose3 жыл бұрын
Oh wow, that sure explains a lot. The first film should've focused on Jean's internal fight with the Phoenix force and saved her killing of Raven for the very end of the film, which would then be her climactic push towards its consumption due to her shame and grief causing weakened resolve. Part 2 would have Dark Phoenix as the big bad, already well-alive & established, changing her environs as she sees fit while dropping subtle hints to the idea that Jean is not completely gone but left trapped in her own mind, unable to reach out even to Charles. But don't show us that visual right away, have us question & wonder about it over most of the film, maybe through moments of subtle, "blink and you'll miss it" facial acting by Sophie Turner. 🔥

The only thing I'll defend about this movie, is Professor X looking like he doesn't know what emotion to express. As a character who could move cities with his mind, I'm pretty sure his usual calm demeanor is more than just him being professional, and more that he HAS to force himself to control his emotions, and was fighting with his own personal feelings to keep his power in check, managing to express little more than a sad silent rage.
@agentofchaos74563 жыл бұрын
I would also defend Jean’s character. As Xavier explicitly states that the cosmic force simply unleashed Jean’s repressed trauma and that send her mind in the wrong direction. So she isn’t really possessed, but is dealing with PTSD. She displayed many PTSD symptoms and behaviors throughout the film. The Dark Phoenix Saga was never really a possession story. It was about Jean having a psychological breakdown due to a series of traumatic events and that made her into a drug addict (her power was like a drug). The whole possession angle was only in the cartoon version.

I actually feel really bad for Kinberg. I mean, he seems like a nicer person than Singer and compared to Apocalypse (which I hated), this felt like a slight improvement. His directing actually felt better than Singer’s, compared to Bohemian Rhapsody it had less cuts, he got along with the cast better than Singer ever did (the X-Men cast both old and new reportedly clashed with Singer since the first X-Men movie), and in the end he even took responsibility for the film flopping (which is something I haven’t seen that much in directors of a comic book adaptation) which makes him out as a humble person compared to Singer’s control freak tendencies. Shame that Disney/Fox had to step in and ruin it. Compared to the Last Stand though, it wasn’t as bad.

7:05 "She just exists and we're supposed to feel bad for her because everyone else feels bad for her." One simple fix to make this scene more emotional: have Jean cry. It would have been much more impactful if Charles came into the room and found young Jean with her legs on the couch, her face buried in her knees, while crying her heart out. Audible sobs, shaking with grief, all of that would have conveyed the emotional trauma Jean just faced losing her parents. Instead of Professor X going on and on about a pen, have him come up to Jean, place a comforting hand on her shoulder, and quietly say, "You're home." Then, have the scene fade to black. Less dialogue, more emotion. Something that could be said for this entire movie.

Looking back here are a few things that could've made this movie a bit better. Getting rid of the Vux character and make her Emma Frost. I that she died, but they actually could've brought her back. Before Emma died, she psychically transferred her mind into a new body. Emma enters the school under a false name (real name from the body she stole) as a teacher. Manipulating the team from within. Make Jean believe she wants to help her like before. Then reveal who she is and introducing the Hellfire Club. Make the Phoenix Saga a 2- or 3-part film. First would focus on Phoenix, Hellfire part 2, and then make Dark Phoenix part 3 or combined with part 2

Emma was originally going to be the villain for the movie. There is concept art of the Hellfire Club online.

So glad Mystique is dead. Absolutely sick to death of that character, especially the miscast Jennifer Lawrence version. I never want to see Mystique in a movie again unless they're actually going to depict her correctly.

To be fair, them saying another X-Woman is Jean's best friend without showing them doing anything together sounds true to the comics (Storm)

"She's nobody's favourite." She is 10/10 the best of the X-Men. Best powers. Best chaotic storylines. And being an older sibling from an age gap household, a character who has to devote herself to everyone else's needs while also being expected to appear happy and free so nobody feels guilty about the crazy making amount of emotional labour you're always doing. But the films really couldn't even get that across with a the movie's F-bomb "it's just so fucking hard to live for everyone and always have to worry about being there for them when I could just fly away or make them all be quiet".

It’s pretty well known Simon Kinberg’s original script was a more fleshed out story which included the Skrulls and more of the comic storyline but Fox got calls from the MCU where they asked them not to use some of the elements in the movies since the MCU was about to use them. Idk if that changed Jean at all but it does sound like Kinberg had a more stronger vision in mind that had to be changed at the last minute
@agentofchaos74563 жыл бұрын
His original script apparently had the Hellfire Club as the villains. Aliens were meant for the sequel.

As if the X-Men series has ever remotely cared about continuity. Most of the films are better off viewed as separate entities as opposed to actually being in the same chronology.

@@axelnilsson5124 Xavier comes back as Headmaster in 2018 as evidence by Deadpool 2. Everyone from Dark Phoenix appears in that Deadpool 2 scene except Jean. Meaning for the timeskip to Days of Future Past’s ending to make sense, the X-Men need to recruit Deadpool, recruit Logan, and find Jean by 2023 (5 years later)

I kind of feel bad for Sophie Turner. I followed along with the production of Dark Phoenix, and was really intrigued to hear about all the work she was putting in for this, studying up on identity disorders and trauma and the like. She was clearly committed to doing Jean's story justice now that it was center stage, and MAN did she look incredible in those promotional pictures of her Phoenix form. 🔥 Though her performance was ultimately considered by most critics to be one of the film's better aspects (along with James McAvoy's), I was left somewhat underwhelmed by what we were given of her in the end, and felt like there was way more we were originally meant to see. (Blame it on all they tried to cram into that short-ass runtime, which felt like it all flew on by me when I was in the theater. Pun not intended).

Troubled Production: The trouble began when Fox executives looked at the poor critical and commercial reception for X-Men: Apocalypse and felt that the film was an anomaly of what was otherwise a consistently well-performing franchise, rather than evidence that audiences were growing frustrated with its creative direction. In a desperate attempt to win back the fans' trust, Fox decided to reboot The Dark Phoenix Saga, which they previously tackled with the aforementioned The Last Stand to disastrous results. Recurring series producer Simon Kinberg was chosen to direct in his feature film debut due to his aforementioned work as a fill-in director on Apocalypse. Although Kinberg had the backing of the stars (including Jennifer Lawrence, who reportedly refused to do the film unless Kinberg directed it), fans were more skeptical given how Kinberg co-wrote The Last Stand, never directed a prior feature film from start to finish, and lost some credibility for his role in the infamous Fantastic Four (2015) reboot. Filming went smoothly, but once Fox executives got to see a rough cut, both them and Kinberg agreed that the film needed extensive reshoots. Unfortunately, the reshoots didn't occur for over a year since Fox had to renegotiate many of the actors' contracts. It was during this time that Rupert Murdoch, having grown disillusioned with the trend of media consolidation, decided to sell Fox and its entertainment assets to Disney, which owned Marvel Comics and would almost certainly move to put the characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Since the deal wouldn't be finalized for nearly a year-and-a-half, Fox was forced to continue on with the film. The reshoots ended up resulting in the film moving up its release date by several months. All this was happening as the marketing campaign was rolling out. Then things went to hell. James Cameron, who was writing and producing Alita: Battle Angel for Fox, complained that his film was scheduled to open against Mary Poppins Returns, Aquaman and Bumblebee, fearing a box office slaughter from all three. Consequently, Fox moved up Dark Phoenix's release date by four months, only a couple of days after its first trailer dropped, making it a summer blockbuster, while giving Alita the February slot originally reserved for Dark Phoenix. Several Fox executives, including current studio head Emma Watts, rebelled against the move but were overruled. As the merger with Disney closed, many of the film's marketing staff were forced out in the post-merger shakeup, resulting in the film's campaign lacking any sort of message or direction. Not helping matters was that the film, instead of hype building, faced either apathy or merciless mocking on the Internet before its release, seeing it as a Contractual Obligation Project in a franchise that was doomed to end in the merger's aftermath. The end result was a disaster both critically and commercially. The final film was a critically-panned mess that received a lower Rotten Tomatoes percentage score than both The Last Stand and X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Fan concerns about Kinberg's lack of experience were validated as even the most generous critics singled out Kinberg's weak direction as a major flaw. Financially, the film was a massive bomb that opened with a whopping $33 million on its opening weekend in America, the lowest opening ever for an X-Men film. Things got worse when bad word-of-mouth lead to the film experiencing a second weekend drop of 71.5%, the worst for the genre since Batman v Superman three years prior. The lack of legs was further exacerbated by the film being pulled from over 1,600 theaters in its third weekend. The film effectively ensured any thought of the X-Men film franchise continuing in its current incarnation would be dashed. The last nail on the coffin came when Disney disclosed a $170 million loss in its studio division for the company's third financial quarter, specifically calling out Dark Phoenix's poor performance as the main reason for the quarter's weaker-than-expected results. Consequently, Disney moved to gut whatever autonomy Fox had left post-merger, taking a direct role in green-lighting films for the brand and shelving almost every film from the studio in the early stages of development indefinitely. The only films that escaped the purge were those connected to valuable IP (i.e. Avatar, Planet of the Apes, etc.), Fox Searchlight fare and those that Disney chose to move to other brands in their portfolio.

Not to mention that it was originally planned as two-part film, but thanks to Apocalypse it became one-parter. They hoped for expanding Phoenix saga in a possible crossover with New Mutants, but thanks to Disney those plans were scrapped too.. and now we're here..
