By 1980, Gene Kelly was no longer able to do the highly-athletic dancing of the 40's and 50's, but still demanded to do his own dancing and roller skating in the movie. And he worked, privately, for weeks before arriving on the set to perform. He was 67 when he appeared here. I'm 67 as I write this; no way I could do this. And Classic Gene is still the best. Also, Jeff Lynne and ELO had another big hit with this one.

The biggest mistake was the leading man who was as interesting as wet cardboard. They didn’t have him sing, which you need in a musical. And his acting was terrible. Gene Kelly and Olivia Newton-John brought their A-games on the movie, as did ELO and The Tubes. The movie has a lot of great, fun, silly numbers.

Who, after all, could ever outdo Gene Kelly and Olivia Newton-John? No one. Period. Yes, it's all great, but no one under 20 years old could identify with Gene Kelly or Broadway musicals. That's why it flopped. My favorite part was in the beginning when the Muses came out from the wall mural...very cool. And my roller skating team back in 1981 used to have a routine we did to "All Over the World". Now I have to walk with a cane because of injuries back then.

Then Olivia opens her own Boutique and it flops. She was so beautiful in this Movie. Also without realizing it, she and Richard Gere showed the burgeoning impact of Coffee Houses (Pre Starbucks), and Richard Gere did in in American Gigolo and Pretty Woman. Yes we do and that was a movie version of a musical chorus stage play Heaven Can Wait. However this movie was choppy, clumsy and really a stitched together set of 3 minute MTV style music videos in the infancy of that outlet. The chop rotoscope and psychedelic color lines became a staple of record industry music videos and brit rock films by 1965. She had great success in Grease, which was a proper musical with numerous career actors to hold a plot. She had also had a great ratings ABC TV concert with Andy Gibb and Abba a few years earlier. Her producers are trying to recapture this here, with a substitute Teen Beat discount Andy Gibb. This film suffered as a film as Sgt Pepper did a couple years earlier...for the same reasons.
