The dashes on tanks also need a reduction on the end lag after using them. Your character dashes in and has to wait like a full second before you can even hit an AoE ability despite having the GCD available. It's like you dash in and your brain just blue screens for a second before they go oh yeah I should swing in a circle.

This is actually just a ping issue. With low enough ping you can dash in and aoe without a huge amount of delay. You can test this using noclippy to simulate low ping (or just take my word for it)

@@ianjohnson3274 The only Issue i realized is that Fated brand on the Gnb seems like it hits when the Animation is ending and not on the initial spot, which makes its awkward to use in Wtw Pulls while sprinting. Could just be my imagination though.

Drk was my first tank job and now its my least leveled one (semi perm sitting at 81) and that was before DT. Now I want to play it even less. Thank square, let me go back to being the only needed healer in a party as war and continue having fun

Hot take: as a new player and a level 30 black mage and got to experience pre and post dawntrail, it honestly feels easier and better. Usually I try to optimize my dps throwing in some thunder, mostly the standard rotation, and honestly it makes the standard rotation easier. I don't need to wait for my mana to automatically regen, I don't have to suffer dps loss because of mistakes. But what I hear from higher levels, it forces you to use standard rotation more. Yeah from my experience, it's more beginner friendly and for people with bad hardware/connections and more room to recover without suffering a dps loss at lower levels, but it also removes uniqueness and versatility at higher levels

Bosses spin and turn around enough these days that positional are just kinda nice when you can plan to land them. Thinking about how all the bosses will reappear in the middle of the arena facing the wrong way, finish a 1.5s cast and then turn to face the tank before turning to face another DPS or healer to attack, then turn and throw an aoe at another dps. Positionals made sense when the bosses were far less active than they are now.

This. Positionals blow when your boss is constantly spinning around. Oh here's a double tank buster where the boss has to turn multiple times on the vokes. Oh here is a multi hit line AoE where the boss is facing you for 20 years so you can't even TN for all of it. Oh time to run around the arena constantly so you can't even consistently be behind or to the side (P12S P1 good luck consistently hitting rear during SC or Para3).

Part of why I fell in love with Reaper is that I have absolute control over when I do positionals. In fact the only times I don't is if I play poorly and don't manage my gauge properly, outside of that it's all on me to decide when the right time is to use a positional or if I want to pool them for a True North angle. Viper ... can do that to some extent but rather than a decision I'm opting into it's more like a wave of relief to know I have a stack of TN for Dreadwinter instead of praying the boss stands still. I want to say skill issue (which it is) but man ... One thing you start to notice the moment you have positionals (even as Reaper) is how much "unnecessary" movement bosses have like why do bosses have to recenter so much, and even with a good tank stuff is constantly shifting around. Given enough experience with a boss you start being able take everything into account but I dunno. I feel like there are more interesting approaches to difficulty than "Boss suddenly rotated 90 degrees, enjoy the potency nerf".

Truth, and if you are a viper you dont really get many instances where you can press true north because most of our ogcs are already taken by dps abilities. Most of vipers rotation is one gcd two ogcds. Sometimes we have opportunities to press it but it feels like those opportunities never line up with when you need it. I only think viper really needs the double weave on uncoiled fang removed. It's just clunky anyway and often times the button presses dont even register.

I prefer it without damage. It's nice to not have to think about it as part of your dps rotation. I hope they eventually remove the dmg from the pld and war too.

@@jdragoon099 I don't think I've ever thought of what was Rough Divide as part of DPS rotation, maybe something to randomly add in, but it didn't have a high potency, at least I don't think it did

I like positionals when they matter, but they haven't really mattered for a hot minute. Back then it felt rewarding when you hit positionals, especially when DRG had skills that changed only when you hit positionals but even then, it felt less like a minor loss in damage and more like a "You fucked it all up you scrub" when you missed a positional. Now, the only reason I even remember positionals on Monk is cuz I've played it so long it feels weird not hitting them. Otherwise I feel punished when i fight a fate boss solo simply for having the audacity to fight it solo and not having any tank friends around

I don’t think people are complaining because positionals might be removed, I think it’s more people are complaining that they might be taking away the overall busyness and fastness of the job as a whole.

I used to hate positionals but after playing viper and having nothing else going for them (party buffs, mitigation tools, etc.) there’s virtually nothing else going on for them other than pressing shiny buttons. I would hate to have to stand on one spot and just follow the shiny buttons. At least right now, like Xenos said, if people want to ignore them and lose out on potency, they can.

7:00 Bro, I don't know what's wrong with people in this expansion. Way too many times where Pictos will bomb the mobs then just not bring them to me and just sit there taking damage instead of bringing them to the tanks.

Sounds like some bad pictos tbh. I've gotten used to pulling off of tanks with pictos' burst. So much so that I usually run right next to them, so when I do, the add just walks right up to us. I also use swift+rainbow to gain a white stack while running until the tank has made it w2w. I'm glad they're buffing tank aoe aggro, however.

7:06 The last time this happened to me was in a low-level dungeon, Haukke Manor, I think. I fat-fingered grit along with unmend, so I lost grit right after unmend shot out. Didn't realize I didn't have aggro, so a BRD pulled and sprinted away instead of towards me. By the time I noticed, he was so far away that I just couldn't catch up until he died. BRD blamed me for not holding aggro (fair enough) but also the healer for not healing him. The healer went off on this man. "I don't think you wanted to be healed because you were running from me, so I didn't bother chasing you." - or something like that.

Didn't positionals back in HW proc other abilities? I vaguely remember DRG having to hit F/C and Wheeling Thrust correctly in order to get their Geirskogul procs?

Combos literally didn't happen without positionals back then. You'd get a limp noodle hit with no follow-up and no effects (dots, etc.)

Honestly, my only complaint on viper is that I have to constantly look down on my hotbar to see which ability goes next in the chain. I don't know why each ability has to have 2 different procs that do the exact same thing.

@@whodis3489 Salted Earth does have Regen health and grants you a 20% as long as you're inside of it. I just doubled checked the PVP job actions, the cure potency is 2K

The fact the only thing they're doing for SAM is reducing the recast timer on Tendo tells me the designer for it doesn't even play the class. There's 0 addressing of the fact that you have to sit on Meikyo charges as the duration ticks down during the 2 minutes because you need to start the burst with Tendo and Tsubame or they'll end up outside of raid buffs. At 2.14 gcd you end up with 4 seconds left on the timer if you don't move during any Iai casts at all in the 2 minute burst (so there's no ability to delay casts to reposition if needed because you'll just lose all the meikyo charges and end up way behind in the rotation). Or the fact that 4 years of muscle memory for Tsubame went out the window because not only can't I use Tsubame to track where I am in the rotation anymore if needed because its usage is tied to Meikyo and it has no cd, but also the fact that I need to remember to press Meikyo when I already have 3 Sen, despite never having to do that prior, just to use Tendo in the first place. Either make Meikyo a 30 second buff so that it's not so easy to drop the buff during 2 min burst. Or just make Midare be Tendo all the time and cut the potency from 1020 to 860 so it's still the same potency every minute since you already do 2 Tendo and 2 Midare every minute, and give back the charges and cd to Tsubame. Unless their plan was for people to use Tendo outside of raid buffs, all the changes they made this xpac are nonsensical and annoying to play around if you played the class at all prior.

Even in skill's tooltips positionals are not indicated consistantly. Sometime it's directly in the difinition, sometime it's indicated as a bonus.

People complaining about Tank Emnity never played before Shadowbringers when Tanking and keeping emnity was somewhat challenging. Anyone who I've seen complain about it since DT came out is just mad because they can't use 1 AOE to establish their aggro and then keep running, literally you just AOE a second time and you're fine 99% of the time.

Seeing people call viper too weak or low dps is hilarious when even on an rdps chart its in the top when it has no party buffs at all and the only adps with a higher cap than it is samurai which has like 4 abilities that are 900+ potency lol

Probably just a good chance that they're all too dumb to play it properly - despite the fact the job practically plays itself. It's really just "get your buffs up, spam everything that isn't your filler until you need your buffs refreshed and have no Dreadwinder phase to do it."

@@Skitch213 even easier, Once you have your personal buffs up, all you need to pay attention to is your noxious gash timer, and your filler/dreadwinder will automatically keep the other two up.

@@arkalonhd4219 That's pretty much exactly what I said. Get the buffs up, spam the big stuff and never use your filler unless you don't have a charge of dreadwinder. That being said, you're very much right about dreadwinder keeping everything up. I usually open with Dread Fang > Swiftskin's Sting and then just spam dreadwinder phases and Awaken phases until there's no resources left and I'm forced to filler for a few GCDs.

Pictomancer reminded me of why I picked and love BLM back in 2.0. They were not easy to play but was very rewarding for playing decently good. Now, BLM is just as unapproachable as ever with the only reward you get for playing decently is maybe you dish out similarly with other braindead DPS.

Blackmage is one of the EASIEST jobs to play in the game imo. learning the rotation might be a bit harder than others imo but performing on blm is by far one of the easiest jobs in the game now with an insane amount of instantcasts it leaves the ONLY kind of optimizing left is leylines placements.

I I think what throws people off is the inability to be mobile in fights. I think the fights is what makes it hard to optimize so people equate it with being "hard". Depending on the fight you will have to know when to transpose, leylines, swiftcast, greed then use gap closer to party member. But that's not the class itself. That's design on the fights.

Thing I find funny is how blm has a decently long rotation. Sure you don't have to follow it to the "T" but with pictomancer you just pop hammer time, press it 3 times and I sware to God you do more damage then any full DPS rotation in the game. I'm not complaining it feels really nice to see chonks of HP vanish but I feel like any other dps is lacking now.

Positional abilities solve a problem that no longer exists in the game. Positional abilities like backstab and blindside are skill checks for melee dps that tune up melee damage during content where another player holds threat. The reason this used to be important was so that melee with positional skills felt weaker on their own. This kind of design philosophy isn’t really relevant anymore, and there are better ways to show skill than force positions on players.

It only took 6 years of continuous feedback to get charges on Lightspeed. 2 Charges and a CD reduction to what I'm assuming is 60 seconds is going to be great.

I like positionals currently. Whether I had played with them in Heavensward or not is irrelevant. I do more damage when I hit them and it keeps the fight more interesting IMO. Is it devastating when I miss them? No, and I'm happy that it is not.

it's just a little optimization who is really fun to think about when you fight something, without positional melee would be so boring he say that because he is a main tank, but as a main melee, without positionals it would be a snooze fest most of the time

@@Elyakelarthars says the same thing and he’s Mained melee a fair amount of time. Positionals used to matter in HW because they’d actually break your rotation combo . All you lose now is a little potency. People think positionals are difficult or interesting but they’re not, especially when most including yourself 100% use true north whenever you can. Taking away positionals means they can be much more creative with mechanics. Xeno is right, positional are an old system that hinders the current fight design.

@@alexandraalmagest The only reason some bosses dont have positionals is if they're wall bosses. Its not cause "its good enough to not matter",its a fight design thing. When the boss is facing towards you 100% of the time you cant hit positionals,they couldve made it so it was a standard boss and you lost all your positionals,or make it the way they did.

Landing positionals is trivial anyways, yea sure less potency but thats it. Its not like its not gonna proc another skill or you wont get a buff if you didn't land it.

With VPR you do have to make sure you have a long enough duration on your Death's Design (or whatever it's called, I forget at the moment) before you go into reawaken, but that's about it.

Yes, I played back in ARR when Heavy Thrust wouldn't give you the buff if you didn't hit from the side... Impulse drive, if not hit from the rear, would not start the combo... positionals that punish like that are a bad thing. Positionals that give boosted damage are actually really good for the game's health as it's something small that less-skilled members of the community can ignore completely and their gameplay will (for the most part) not be affected while also providing a tool for those who wish to push themselves a bit more can have something to work on. I think your desire to just have melee play the way you want is exactly what gets us into ShB and EW era fight/class design

VPR and DNC are really close in how their skills flow with the difference being that DNC uses a proc based system, while VPR is an alternation system. My crossbars are even set up very similarly when it comes to their single target and AoE mapping. So if you think DNC is an easy job, VPR is right there alongside it. The cries of it being nerfed is an overreaction as usual, but it is surprising that the announcement was made so quickly. I figured it wouldn't be until well after the Arcadion was released before they did anything.

I almost made that mistake with unlocking and learning viper; I looked to hard. You really just need to hit shit when it lights up. Flanks means side directional, and hinds means rear TBH

I took PLD through MSQ, and one of the first things I noticed at level 97 is that DPS burst damage made it difficult to hold aggro in chain pulls. I've had to abuse shield lob and provoke a lot more than I used to in order to keep aggro on trash. WAR had a similar issue before DT where their AOE kit didn't have any enmity generation beyond what tank stance would give; it's just more apparent with how much burst damage the DPS can pull off now.

This is the consequence of every expansion now just adding big damage cooldown instead of changing rotation or adding a combo ability. Big drooler DPS hit big damage button the second the pull starts, multiplied 2-3 times for every expansion since shadowbringers that this started and you got problems.

I just let them die at that point. It's fine if they're new and paniced during a mechanic, but I have very little patience for slackjaws. If you wanted to be healed, you'd be in range of the heals.

@@whodis3489 it's not a hard ask for them to not be out of range of the heals. You should know by at least lvl 70 how far away you can be and still get healed, and that's super generous. Its also super rare considering you have to go out of your way to not be in range of most heals. Cure 3 is probably the only one that consistently doesn't get everyone from my experience, but it's usually a cold day in hell when I'm forced to use Cure 3. Newer players have an excuse, but the lvl 70+ machinist should know better than that. I'm not going to keep giving bandaids to the wall licker who should know better.

Those Sam skills currently have no recast timers. You cant currently use those either of those skills without fisrt using the ogcd skill meikyo shisui. So either this is a translation error or it will change absolutely nothing. A real fix would be to give tsubame-gaeshi its own timer cd again then what the said would make sense.

I'm not sure what it is, but I don't like the attacks that are gated behind raid buffs. Not that I have a lot of room to complain, I don't really play EX/Savage level content so I'm not sure how something like that affects the overall flow of rotations, if at all.

I thought making jobs easy and boring was bad? Sure positionals sucked in Heavensward but we aren't in that expansion anymore, you don't lose your combo when you miss a positional in Dawntrail. Trying to land positionals around the mechanics is fun and adds a bit of extra skill expression to melee.

I think the real issue is that melee dps need _something_ to make up for the extra damage they deal over casters. Melee dps have always paid for their damage with a positional tax in the same way that casters have always paid for their damage by being forced to stand still to apply full rotations (even SMN has a short casting phase). Removing positionals threatens to throw this out of balance without either reducing the output of melee dps or raising the output of casters.

Losing your combo / buff didnt' suck in HW either, Xeno wouldn't know as he didn't play melee in HW, and others that have been around just as long and have just as valid an opinion, did like then lol. If you think you might miss a positional, just hold your GCD for a half second. If your tank is beyblading the boss in raid, kick em. It's better than the current rotations, where a autohotkey script can purple parse on most melees if you keep your character in range lmao.

Yeah the Gap Closer on GNB is so awkward i rarely use it, i just Lightning Shot, its better cos you are at least causing hate, the gap closer makes you sit there with your thumb up your arse for a full second... The part about DPS (and sometimes healers for me) running AWAY always makes me mad, usually because they slap the mob right away, i like to get at least 1 AoE hit off, ideally my combo to really get hate THEN run to the next pack, but they do not like to wait and will just zip on ahead while im getting my AoE hits on the first pack lol

The only reason positionals still exist is to force True North into rotations. Yet the funny part is that the fact that True North exists further proves that positionals themselves are a bullshit mechanic. Edit: Xeno's got a good point about ranged DPS that steals aggro then flees from the tank. But for every one of those there's a tank in an Alliance Raid that gets an AoE tank-buster put on them and then starts humping the leg of the nearest DPS.

At this point just remove the positionals from melee jobs. There is no reason for them anymore. The fights are more complex and you are moving around anyway.

No they should have them for some jobs and not others. And the ones that have them should get rewarded or punished heavily depending how good they are at meeting the positionals. And if you are a player that dislike positionals their are other jobs that those players can choose.

@@OneTallBloke Yeah 4 tank jobs that are basically the same with diffrent skins. And soon meele dps will also all be the same thing in practise. Just stand still and hit buttons. Having positionals matter DID make it harder. Hence having a higher skill ceiling for certain jobs. Again i'm not saying every meele job needs to have positionals but some of them should and it should be a part of that jobs identity. While other jobs could have other ''gimmics'' to them that seperate them from it peers.

GNB/DRK/DRG gap closer has a weird delay both before and after using them - but what baffles me is that they worried about AGGRO MANAGEMENT on tanks?????? ffs, as a DRK i'm struggling here with all these parse healers around and their swiftcast+res "my bad" combo instead of healing me properly....we have problems, and AGGRO MANAGEMENT isn't one, pull properly.

Picto currently does enough damage (like 2600 combined DPS potency) in their first 2 GCDs that tanks need to pull the EX fights with provoke / tomahawk or they will immediately lose aggro until they burst. I think what's going on is that people are doing their AoE burst on dungeon trash mobs pre-pull. That being said, there are also pulls in DT where the first pack has a giant health sponge that could be single-target bursted, but the tank should be voking / tomahawking them...

I think positionals would be good as a specific class trait. Like if a single class had them as part of its core design. But as an overarching mechanic for melee? Yeah it’s super annoying. It’s kind of cool sometimes but it’s not worth the headache it causes in some fights and it definitely does limit fight design. They can’t make bosses that spin around or force you to move too much or melees just lose damage with no recourse. And even if they just made all moves deal their positional damage it wouldn’t even make melees that much stronger since they already are balanced around always hitting those. It just makes them less annoying and more consistent.

Yes P2S was kinda cool, but for every P2S, there's a P7S, or a E7S, fights which absolutely suck and 'not having positionals' doesn't somehow save them from being shit fights The easiest way to test the theory is to simply pick any fight that has positionals. How does removing the positionals 'improve' the fight, beyond 'I don't like positionals, therefore it'd be more fun for me'? The answer, IMO, is 'it doesn't'. Positionals are one of the few things left in the game that allow a player to express their skill level. If we remove them, Melee parsing will devolve to the same thing every other role's parsing is, just hoping for crits This is a PSA to anyone who doesn't like positionals: There's four melee Jobs in the game that don't have any. They're called Paladin, Warrior, Dark Knight and Gunbreaker.

As a traditional fighting game player, Im always baffled by Square shying away from some jobs being harder than others. I play a lot of POTD and with monk the way it is right now, there is no reason to ever use Tornado kick at 60. It is a potency loss to use that instead of spamming Elixir Field in most cases.

Regarding positionals: Why do people rave over these so much? I haven't played a ton of MMOs, but the ones I have played - WoW, SWTOR, ESO, GW2 - don't seem to incorporate positional abilities (WoW maybe had 1 on rogue for backstab iirc). It seems a very FF14-specific thing that has not aged well with the way the game has progressed imo.

I've had aggro taken from with gnb and i thought i was losing my mind on initial pulls. Like I swore I had hit the enemy right with the 2 aoe's but somehow one of them was chasing a dps after it. Also GNB dash is trash!!!!!!

I get the impression this is the start of bigger changes to come. Paladin and warrior party mit has been a barrier while dark knight and gunbreaker are damage reduction. I'd wager they want to have two types of tanks similar to how we have shield and pure healers right now.

As picto I am constantly pulling trash from tanks unless it's my bf who's tanking and I'll get so much trash on me. I'll sit ON TOP of the tank and they STILL won't get aggro off of me; it's absolutely insane. Not even stopping all damage until they stop help this. How hard is it to see if a party member is taking damage to target and provoke? Esp if the person getting mauled is right on top of you ( usually a ranged enemy is the cause of missing their AOE.. if they're even hitting AOE ). Literally no situational awareness.

I mean personally I'd rather they just commit and remove potency from the dashes on PLD and WAR (Don't remember if theres does or not) as well. Never liked looking at openers and seeing it being suggested to fit in the gap closer to squeak in a liiiitle more damage, because if the DPS check is that tight something is already gone wrong.

I love how people talk about positionals like it is a life or death situation and it makes a job infinitely more engaging when most people don't actually know how to do their damn rotation in the first place. I like positionals on a couple abilities. And I think that everybody is blowing this completely out of proportion like they said they're going to remove all positionals. To be honest, I don't understand why we still have some positionals in the respective classes... In my opinion, positionals should be completely removed from the game. Bosses and their hitboxes are getting bigger and bigger, so they might as well take skills like "True North" completely out of the game, you wouldn't need them anyway and yeah, 1 less skill in the skill bar is better for controller players. Not everyone is a PC god or plays with a mouse and keyboard with what feels like 30 horizontal skill and action bars, all of which have to be operated.
