I think Xioma only really speaks about 4 or 5 to any level really - Mandarin, Cantonese, Fuzhounese, Spanish and maybe another Chinese language? Everything else he's spoken online is more like after a bit of intensive training, which he doesn't speak outside of his vids (like french, wolof, Italian, the american language etc). They're both great polyglots, but approach it in different ways, and Wouter's way is definitely more about quantity.

def the most impressive thing. My girlfriend is 100% proffesionally bi-lingual in English and Mandarin but switching for her takes a few moments to "get in the mind space". She told me its like a different personality in a way. And she's been bilingual her entire life.
@olliemartinelli4034

Tbh I have been bilingual (English and Italian) my whole life and the switching to me is very natural. Like the moment anyone speaks to me in English or Italian I can basically instantly reply with no issues or mixing up the languages. Ig it’s down to individual experience because I’m my household my dad only spoke to me in Italian and my mum only in english so for example at the dinner table the switch between languages was and is always continuous. Chinese and English are also two very different language compared to English and Italian but who knows it’s interesting

Snakker spansk på et nivå mye høyere enn dansken hans, men ville selv om ikke sagt at jeg snakker det. Skal selvsagt ikke ta noe i fra han, det er mektig imponerende det han kan, men ser ikke helt appellen ved å lære så mange språk, men ikke mestre dem. I very recently started Swedish and my main issue is being able to remember en vs ett (I've gotten so many questions wrong cus I couldn't remember if apelsin and citron are both en or just apelsin...not helped by the fact that I cannot see myself talking about lemons regularly) and how nouns inflect. Example from earlier today: Tjej, well MT is no good here because it likes to default to Flicka, and I didn't know any site that listed how to say: the plural, the "the" form and the "the" form's plural. I'm sure there is some logic but I've not picked it up by doing the bare minimum of 2 daily lessons on Duolingo. Will say though, VERY cool language (And I adore the word for spider, Jag tycker om spindeln.)

@@TheGreatBackUpVIDEOS Don't worry too much about en/ett, for kids born in sweden it comes naturally with years of training. Most people who didnt grow up here will be mistaking en/ett every now and then and with time they learn. In fact, as a swede, i had to google when to use en/ett as i don't know any logic behind it. It's just natural.... About the plural form(s) we dont use another word prior to the actual word such as (the) girl. We bend the actual word instead. one/En flick(a), two/två flick(or), the/they/them = flick(orna) the girls (thing) flick(ornas)..... man/män/männen,männens, apelsin,apelsinen,apelsinerna,apelsinernas, fisk,fisken,fiskarna,fiskens,fiskarnas etc :D you can find me at discord with the same nickname as here if you want to

@@zulawoo Where I'm from in South Africa (South-West), most people speak with an accent similar to his here. The northerners speak with a "round" pronunciation of vowel sounds whereas us southerners pronounce them sharply. In the south we also tend to leave out letter in pronounciation (e.g. The way he pronounced "Ons" as "Os" or "Nooit' as "Nooi"). The northerners enunciate the "R" sound a lot as well, they really roll it out. We don't do that in the south.

An artist and polyglot! A true Renaissance man! I've learned tiny amounts of several languages (Polish, Dutch, Greek, Irish, Japanese, Hawaiian) and a slightly higher level in a few other languages (Spanish, Portuguese, Italian). It is such a beautiful challenge, and I've been inspired by this conversation to dig deeper, with more consistency, in a couple of those languages to really be able to identify as multilingual! I tried speaking Dutch in Amsterdam and was sorely disappointed when the person didnt understand me at all and just replied in English 😔😬😆

I don't think they didn't understand you. It's more of a cultural thing to immediately switch to English if someone doesn't comfortably speak Dutch (to the level of native language). The thing about Polyglots like Wouter is that he speaks most of these languages at such a basic level that he has pretty much just remembered phrases that he can use to impress tourists, but is at a level where it is impossible to have a basic conversation or talk about anything more then "I love to talk this language, i think the language is so beautiful." Its impressive, but i wouldnt say he speaks Swedish, Danish or Thai. Those are languages i speak and he is just saying gibberish that impress a tourist that doesnt expect you to speak a single word, or someone who doesnt understand the language is ofcourse impressed

I think a big thing he isn't very good at is phonetics. The six languages where he said he's fluent in, he does sound good. I understand Porugese, French, German, Spanish, Italian and Japanese. And the first ones he showed off were good, you could definetly tell that he could make a conversation with them, but japanese for example is very basic and could be learned in a weeks worth of training. I think overall he's definetly very intelligent, but sounds a bit like he's learning the languages as a show off rather than getting into the culture and with the people like Xiaoma does.

This last weekend I went to Des Moines Iowa to skateboard with friends. I got tacos at a truck and ordered in Spanish and the people were happy and surprised. Then, I went to a skateboard contest and there was an Olympian from Peru there. Peru is the only country I’ve traveled to. Afrikaans separated from Dutch about 400 years ago, and then both languages continued to evolve. So even though they have the same immediate roots, they are not completely mutually intelligible, as far as I know. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Wouter has added even more languages since this video was made. He now speaks several Indian languages too, which is not easy. I am fluent in Hindi, so I can say his Hindi isn't bad (pronunciation needs work), but he want ahead and learned Telegu and Gujarati and a couple of others too. The guy's a machine!

Well it was a bit short and probably something he’s repeated many many times. I wonder if he can really converse in French though, and not the usual hello how are you, how’s the weather stuff. His pronunciation needs work though. For example he said « plus de temps » and « plus de choses » incorrectly. It’s plusss not plu.

He is not fluent, in the sense that he stops for a second before some words, even when he speaks Dutch (his native language): it is a bit his way of speaking. But the Italian was pretty good, easily a B1. If he was fully improvising, higher than B1, but I guess that he prepared a bit this kind of short introductions. He is surely skilled enough to work or have a non-trivial conversation in Italian. Other than a "è difficile per parlare", I do not remember clear grammar mistakes (there was a "due settimani", but it is not clear if it was a grammar mistake or a pronunciation mistake, I would go for the second). While speaking it happens even to natives to mix up a sentence (you start saying "è difficile..." but then you shift to a different structure), especially if you are switching between 23 languages. When I am speaking Spanish or English (for work) and I switch back to Italian (my native language) I often make this kind of mistakes.

I can hear his strong accent in Mandarin and very strong in Thai, but there's not many "internet polyglots" who have both breadth of many languages, and include multiple tonal languages. His Mandarin sounded fluent to me but his Thai sounded more rudimentary. Both are way beyond my level. I'd like to see him in conversation with another Thai speaker such as Paddy or Stu Jay Raj or some Thai youtuber (-:
