GW going to 2.0 on the Contrast range, Army Painter hiring a full Hit Squad of painters to push Speedpaints to 90 colors and revamp the range, and Vallejo the GOAT coming out with these Xpress colors (VERY excited about that matte finish), this is such a great time to be in this hobby in my opinion, we're living in a new golden age of paint innovation and variety and I think we're going to look back at the early 2020's as one of the greatest times to get started in the miniature painting hobby

oh 100%, specifically these new types of semi translucent paints have absolutely changed the game. I picked up the CYMK variants of the GW contrasts just to test some colour theory stuff out and see what happens. I keep finding myself do something with them, that ANYONE who can hold a brush could do and just 'yeah, ok then, here we go' It's incredible lmao what a time to be alive

Generally speaking this is still true and part of why they are my favorite manufacturer of paints for minis, but I was shocked to see that their revamped lineup with new bottles and new logos included not only several new additions, but also some removals. Plus: 23 Xpress Colors, Xpress Medium, Ultra Matt Varnish, 18 regular Game Colors, 6 Fluo Colors (and moving existing 2 to this new sub-line), 2 Washes, 3 Inks, 12 Special FX Colors Minus: 18 regular Game Colors, 6 Extra Opaque Colors (and moving remaining 2 to the main line), 2 Washes, 1 Ink, 7 Special Effect Colors (most replaced by above), Crackle Medium I'm curious/worried now what will happen with other paint lines of theirs.

Troll Green and Space Grey colours seem a bit off. Maybe they just seem more opaque. Otherwise, they seem great. I agree about the colour limitations you mentioned. It would also be nice to have more flesh tones for various skin types. I really like the new bottles and tops, a needed improvement on an old design. Overall, I think it's a great start, and the best contrast range we've seen yet.

Yeah Space Grey by necessity has to be opaque, troll green although a nice had filler is not what I would have done myself

That intro!! You sir, are a genius in disguise! Thanks Maestro Hidalgo. I already have the whole xpress range as soon as they came out and I’m really happy about them. No reactivating and constant properties around the range. Also new, friendly recycled dropper bottles, where you can see all colours perfectly! Also really good saturation and control because of their transparency. I love it!

All they told me is between November and January, but it's already December and nothing. Sadly I can't tell you anything else, because I don't know it. The main issue is Vallejo doesn't sell directly to customers, they sell through distributors and that complicates things

The colors look great except for Lotus Black. I looked at the high res photo linked, and it reads more blue than black. Black Legion (Citadel) and Grim Black (The Army Painter) by comparison actually read as black. I'm excited to try these out. Not sure how much I like the long dry time. Vallejo makes incredible products, so I'm pretty confident this will likely be my go to (with a couple color exceptions).

Templar white is very impressive. Imperial yellow looks like it is just as yellow as the new contrast paints, but it has a solid contrast effect. Same with Martian Orange. I also like their matte finish in general. The smaller range is a gripe, as I'm not sure what I would replace from the contrast paints I already have. Also. PLEASE. Vajjelo, Army Painter, Citadel, ANYONE! MAKE A SEA-GREEN CONTRAST PAINT!

As a returnee to the hobby after many many years I am blown away by how the whole range of paints has changed and all the brands that I'd never heard of before when I was a kid! I have mixed feelings about speed/contrast paints as I'm still relearning to paint with normal ones 😂 but I do like the idea of a sort of cheat code these products provide! These look great! I usually use inks over a grisaille and it's time consuming, as I almost always have to mix colors and add matte varnish (of varnish afterwards). I don't use contrast because inks are cheaper and more versatile for my paint style, but at this price I might get some key useful colors from this range.

Love the working time on these, which imho puts it way above the rest. Being able to move the paint around a few mins after application without causing artifacts puts it more in oil territory, which is just MWAH!

You are spot on, with the ranges CONS, this was exactly what I wanted to comment under the video - Bone, Grey an a Saturated Green - this where the 3 colors I would like to have now. Still I'm very impressed with how uniform the colors and theapplication of them looks on the video. Already sold AP Speedpaints so now I'm just waiting for the premiere in my area. Also - holy smokes Vallejo applying burns to AP by making their range even cheaper than AP - nuts!

We're about to release a small range of 1/144 and 1/72 pilots and ground crew STLs to complement our plastic aircraft kits, and I really want to give these a try with them! I think they will work beautifully on small scale figure models with lots of surface detail. Great video and congratulations to Vallejo on what look like a very good product!

I've found a very good use for Mystic Blue. If mixed with light silvery metallics (I use Vallejo Metal Color Silver) it results in a very nice blueish metal color, perfect to paint gromril armor on dwarfs =)

Nice to hear they dry slower than Contrast, a thing that according to many reviews I've seen seems to be true for the Army Painter speedpaints as well. I live in Japan, and Contrast here is even more expensive than in Europe, while the Speedpaints are nowhere to be found. Vallejo paints instead are distributed by a local company named Volks, and I hope they'll get these new Xpress as soon as possible to try them out...

These look pretty good and first I've even heard of them! After painting 3 games & 100+ minis, Speed Paints have completely replaced Contrast for me as I'd say they're better in almost every way. This range looks like it has several in-between colors that Speed Paint doesn't have and with an equally better-than-contrast finish so but I'll be grabbing this full range too. I need to go look up when these come out

They look great! Those yellows are incredible! The orange and bright blue colours in particular are looking like super easy ways to do plasma coils on Space Marines. The matte finish is very nice to have too. Citadel Contrast has a bit of a sheen to it, kind of a satin finish that isn't always what you want. The colour range is a tad limited for the moment, but the foundation is here and it can grow into an awesome range. Curious as to how they behave over metallic colours. The red and turquoise tones in particular are holding my interest here because I love me some Heresy style Thousand Sons and Alpha Legion. Also curious what they do through an airbrush. Contrasts can do some interesting things there.

The matte finish is not a good combination with metallics sadly, it's a tradeoff you have to make

Would have liked someone to think of Historical figures like Napoleonic era when they design these. How marching figures , artillery and Cavalry go with them. The white will be one to get for this reason. Its less a blue wash like in contrast paints and more a light grey wash colour. And 3.5 Euro is about $5AUD which is similar to Model Colours prices which is GREAT!!

I’m actually ok with reactivation as a method of wet blending. If I can get a thin layer of another color in top of a dry layer without breaking then let the colors melt together similar to oil paints.

I went "WHOOA" upon discovering most of these colors. The tints are so nice, they look so smooth, and the fact that they are WATER MIXABLE (+ the long drying time allowing you to work with it better) The range is indeed relatively limited for now but hey. I'm going to wait for other tests to be sure, but I wasn't convinced by Contrast and Speedpaint due to their respective drawbacks which don't align with my painting style. This could be it ! (Sidenote : They have a very nice purple and that's something rare)

@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures I'm back a month later, having bought most of the Xpress Colors (3€ each here, I love my store) and started testing them, so far I love them ! Gloomy Violet is quickly becoming my favourite purple paint, and they mix so well that the shortcomings of the range don't seem to be that much of a problem Thank you for your testing and helping make these as good as they are !

thanks for this video Juan. For me, having "only" 24 colors to start with is less intimidating, as I can dive into them with a relatively low amount of money (yes one can definitely get a selction of paints without getting immediately the full range, but I suck at choosing paints, I want them all lol) and play with them. I'm sure they will expand the range anyway once they have some feedback from the market.
