First your videos are wonderful! Second I feel what you are going through. I am a reporter and relatively new to your channel and Auntie K's channel too and I am so very pleased to learn from you both! I just wanted to add my personal experience with comments on my femme form. After I post my show on YT the best I can hope for is that my audience makes no comment on my appearance. I gained a few lbs during the past year and my shirts started fitting *ahem differently-- and the comments came. It is a very fine line for those of us who wish to appear femme, attractive and professional- and the expectations of the public can almost make it impossible to meet their standards- if you are percieved as if you are trying to show off your form, the validity of what you have to say drops precipitously. I can only imagine how difficult it is for young femme artists and musicians and video essayists. For some reason certain people cannot listen and/or think if they can see a bit of decollatage- and they seem to also assume that ones' IQ has dropped if you have two or three buttons open on your shirt. I honestly don't quite know how to move forward? Anyway best of luck to both of you amazing talents!

People now hate self-deprecating humor, they say it ruins the mood to put yourself down. BUT THEY ALSO HATE WHEN YOU LOVE YOURSELF. People will never be satisfied they must dictate your very being. In my opinion I think another issue is who is profiting from these women being sexy. Sexualizing women is a staple in the entertainment industry, and it was all fine and dandy when men did it. But now we live in an age where more women are profiting off their desirability, and now it’s a problem.

There's a reason why someone like a Meg Thee Stallion gets so much heat for her presentation. Even Beyonce' when she started being much more overtly sexual in her music and videos, got so many thinkpieces about how she was disappointing and no longer a role model to young girls. I think there's a conversation to be had around what the entertainment industry prioritizes for the marketing and selling of Black female artists music and imaging and how there seems to be a lack of "balance" from a mainstream perspective but we cannot remove these women's autonomy and agency from the equation.

I think that Chole being vulnerable openly also contributes massively to the backlash against her. Like people are offended that she's affected by the hate. It goes against the expectation of the 'strong black woman'. By being radically vulnerable she's reminding people of her humanity which for some is too much to handle. Like they can't fathom connecting sexuallity and vulnerability, to be sexual you have to be detached and to be vulnerable you have to be "pure". It's so messed up.

"Anyone existing in that type of body and frame is immediately sexualized." This made me feel so seen and validated. I was once reprimanded at work because I had a cross body purse and you could suddenly see I had boobs. I simply want to exist. Yes I completely agree, I have a very similar body type to Chloe and it's taken me a while to get semi comfortable with wearing clothes that may flaunt it, like for example I would always wear oversized jackets to cover my butt so that men wouldn't stare and I would never wear anything that remotely shows my cleavage and I usually also feel safer when I wear clothes that cover everything, which is annoying

@@herenow4550 That's interesting because, at least in the celeb world, it comes off differently. A good example was the Britney vs Christina thing. @@unluckyobserver6532 the women you mention actually deal with the same hate and negative comments especially Meg since she is the newest to the social media but you have factor in Meg was an adult already and start off with the sexy edge to her while Chloe had been expose to popularity as minor and have her growth as woman under social media eye. Beyoncé dealt with it but she started out via the beginning of internet so her hate was mostly website blogs and the press but it’s been mention in interviews before how hard it was on her being so young I do believe it was her late teens or early twenties at the time. As for nicki Minaj, she always got hate they have criticize the hell out of her, she often blame for this being the pioneer of the way for other new artists have come thru the gate being sexy or others would consider overly sexual. With nicki she is adult and she pretty always consistent in her imagery plus with hip hop being pretty big on being confident and bragging tones of the bars it’s normalized so it’s easy to see she is embrace because her fandom but she definitely get hate. What's crazy to me is that both girls talk aaaalll about their sexuality on Ungodly Hour. They're having affairs, they're breaking up and getting back together with different men, they're literally *k_lling* men. Part of what makes their music so relatable is because their lyrics are so raw and personal even when they're fantastical. And they also share a lot of their personalities on social media; they're both kind of nerds but they can also get it, y'know? That's what attracts me to their music, because I see myself in their personalities and what they're singing about. But of course, because the Ungodly Hour promotion wasn't as overtly, visually sexual as Chloe's Have Mercy promotion, people didn't pay attention or raise any alarm bells. Like many other commenters, I also remember when people started pressuring Chloe to go solo from her sister because she was more "mature," and they'd say it's because of her voice but what they were *really* talking about was her body. And now that she's doing exactly that, but on her own terms, people are suddenly singing a different tune. They wanted to control Chloe's body and sexuality. Now that *she's* controlling it, they have issues. And meanwhile, Halle is exploring her own sexuality in the public sphere while watching her sister get attacked, along with the backhandedness of everyone framing her own body in contrast with her sister, which is gross and dehumanizing in its own way. I just hope these girls can stay protected, by their family and friends and by their fellow female musicians. I mean, Beyonce chose them for a reason! Rewatching that live where Chloe's crying broke my heart all over again. Regardless of their thoughts and desires, people need to get over their entitlement to SPEAK those thoughts out loud in a public space. Social media creates this illusion of invitation, the idea that Chloe actually wants to hear what you have to say about her body, no matter how crass or rude or humiliating, and that's simply not true. Maybe just shut up and stream Ungodly Hour instead I dunno...

How are they taking men’s lives? Those men commit suicide which the media casts after conducting more narrative production work as resultant of their ‘victimization’ of men?’ Or would you say it was a murder with no murder victim? She didn’t feel like saying to the media that ‘well maybe he killed himself because they weren’t fucking or talking, or doing complex things involving mutual care anymore.’ But it doesn’t matter anymore does it. I’m confused because that part doesn’t actually make any sense when you say ‘I hope those girls can stay protected”. Actually, it is a bit of a paradox: the idea that women are forced to ‘victimize’ to not become the victims of larger societal vectors of violence, and precarity. Or maybe I’m making an artificial insight, because you never say there’s some compelling factor influencing the relational comportment of ‘girls’. How they ‘decide’ to ‘act’. I have a really, really hard time believing that these women aren’t making these decisions which go against normality because they are just compelled by ‘the way they are’ or their acquired habits. Wouldn’t you say that whatever caused the men to commit suicide, also made life such that it was seemingly a mercy or an escape - as the committing of suicide is - for the women to leave them? Both for the woman, and the man? The pressures of neoliberalism such that without privilege you don’t really have the option to stay with someone through hard times: if you both cannot find work, and cannot eat etc, you will obviously be at a high risk to your health and life. People are forced to move so much in the modern day, mainly within borders, since borders are violent. How can you expect women under so much pressure in a relationship to not have affairs, just as it would be ridiculous to not expect men under pressure to make decisions such as affairs , or engagement with violence (something which is very traditionally a ‘masculine evil’, vs the ‘feminine evils’ of privacy and self control. Societal, financial, personal pressures? Some semi-traumatic event, as many relationships which end abruptly end. girls and men. It’s a difficult dichotomy to work within. People fuck each other and they also make promises to fuck each other and perform the production of emotions with each other for a long time. Promises are promises, just words. A metaphorical gun to your head, yes even a metaphor, means more than words.

I’m sorry for my comment, it’s not well written like I wanted it to be. Just on the ‘killing men’ part, I feel you don’t believe this, but that gets rebroadcast as something like ‘hateful women are purposefully causing the suicide of men’. I feel like that just reverts to the very beginning, turning women’s sexuality into a weapon against them, or people’s in general, as if there is ANYTHING MORALLY WRONG WITH NOT WANTING TO FUCK SOMEONE ANYMORE anything, except, societally wrong, with not following a certain ritual and process of societal detainment when you don’t want to fuck or spend time with that person anymore? what is it that is morally wrong about not verbally sending someone you may not want to speak to a goodbye love letter? If you did that, you clearly still loved them. There’s nothing moral about that.

Why do we assume that Chloe is more aggressive/ less meek because she’s not as small as Halle. So weird this policing of bodies
@DoraWinifred
@DoraWinifred 2 жыл бұрын
1000% this policing is part of the problem with the ideology of femininity, being “feminine” one assumes a feminine woman should be small, take up less space and therefore be meek. When you have a woman that’s bigger It confuses the image because one aspect she “should” be small so then a lot of bigger ladies over compensate with their personality and act meek or become more “personable”. It makes me annoyed because This is probably why people are so fat phobic to Lizzo, they look at her think because she is bigger she should be performing this meekness more that other women but as she is rightfully unapologetically herself therefore people are mad as she’s showing herself and “taking more space”. We need to stop policing people bodies especially women and more so black women. We are just people living our lives and navigating the world we don’t exist for others (dis)pleasure.

And In terms of the humbling point, I think because Black women are looked down on (especially Black women who are dark skin and/or trans, fat, disabled, working-class) and there are people who base their self worth on our demise. When they see a Black woman who loves themself they feel threatened as their foundation for their self worth is crumbling. The moral of the story is to learn to respect and love yourself in a way where you're not constantly comparing yourself to other people. Well I guess I can only speak 4 myself but I think BW are just..black women. Just like all other women. I certainly don't feel jealous or want to put them down (Halle Berry is probably one of the most beautiful women to have ever lived imo) but the trend of women punishing other women for flaunting their sexuality is definately not limited to BW. Even if a lady is pretty but not wearing revealing clothes women who work with her or see her picture online will be bitchy towards her. I think this is well known and happens to women of all ethnicities. I don't know this lady Chloe but the idea of punishing pretty sexual ladies always happens from jealous women and sometimes jealous men. Men sometimes are surprisingly hostile towards a display of female sexuality they don't expect to see or something they perceive as being sexual anyway! The reason for it all is that a sexual female is very powerful and other women are envious of them and pretend they don't good when they do and are scathing about their looks online. Men have the obvious sexual response of lusting after such ladies but less self assured men are jealous. It is fear based as stated astutely in the video, when a woman acts sexually for herself some men get resentful. I just wanted to say it's not just BW who are treated this way if they are perceived as looking sexy, all ethnicities get s*ut shamed and treated with disdain by other women etc. HOWEVER I have noticed that BM really do have a problem with BW being sexual for themselves. They want a woman to be a "wife " so slim, pretty but submissive so definitely not acting sexually. Certain BM on a very popular KZbin channel are rebelling against the modern BW and rubbishing the academic achievements of BW, putting down their looks etc. You may know this channel and it's pretty horrifying to witness the vicious way black men speak about their women. Women of all ethnicities are sticking up for BW on that channel because it's simply unfair to target a a specific race and openly say they need to change everything about themselves. It's BM who are the main demographic who do look down upon and disrespect BW. I can see its roots are in jealousy and control , but the narrative being sold is BW are too aggressive, acting in "their masculine" and not soft or gentle enough or being too sexual like Megan Thee Stallion and not acting like "wife material ", which is relevant to this video. BM feel they are losing control. It's ridiculous to attempt to stereotype an entire race and gender and say they are ALL exactly the same in thought and deed but that's what bitter BM are doing. Seeing confident cheery women reduced almost to tears being told they are average at best and men will never want them by black men is truly upsetting to witness. I feel Ms Itabor it is BM who wish to see the demise of strong independent sexual BW because it is BM who are insulting BW in the most base cruel ways everyday online. Not all women see "Black women" or "Latina women " etc they just see women . Colour is irrelevant to me personally , I wanted to get the point across not everyone wants to put BW down or even thinks in such a way.

The cognitive dissonance of society is insane. It deems low self confidence as undesirable and pressures you to consume products so you can be more confident and beautiful to take over the world, but at the same time shames you when you do have that confidence and tries to humble you- especially if you're a woman, and especially if you're Black. It's so bizarre, it's like a toxic partner that is attracted to your confidence as long as it comes from them exclusively, like "how dare you feel good about yourself without *my* approval?". I like Chloe. She’s theatrical, dedicated, and you can always see that she cares about and puts effort into her performances. I have no issue with how she expresses herself. Women are often told that they’re too much and should not listen to their instincts and intuition. I like watching Chloe be unrestrained and bold. I think the black women and hypersexuality conversation is interesting and does comment on a real problem, but often it just turns into respectability politics and misogyny. In general, for all media, I would be really interested to see an artist who is creative in their sexuality. Because although the attitudes of women expressing their sexuality vary wildly, a lot of times the images of what is sexy end up looking the same.

@@myasmith1820 there is honestly so much. To preface I live in a large German city & also spend some time abroad in the US. So I have some personal experiences and I am female. Also Europe/Germany are not magical places where nothing bad ever happens. Fist of the encounter that I mention above would have never happened in Germany. Nobody would have the gaul to shout this at a women in broad daylight. Might something similar have happened at night, somewhere where people are partying - yes but not in the day. Second I have never been publicly complimented on my clothes or my body in Germany (but also have never gotten any negative feedback from strangers either). In the US there would regularly be comments on my body and clothes both negative and positive. I also have only ever been catcalled in the US never in Germany. I also never really felt unsafe in Germany at night but felt unsafe in the US in my own apartment (but that might also be due to differences in how the cities are constructed). But that is a bit besides the point… So back to the point, at least where I was in America slogans that proclaim association to stuff where everywhere on cars, on billboards, on clothes. Associations off all kinds political, religious or just hobbies openly proclaimed. In Germany you would never know, for example you would have to guess the polictial association of a person by their status. The only people that openly proclaim their political affiliations (apart from maybe a small sticker on their car bumper) are either far left or far far right (but even then their clothes might make that association more clear). I also have never seen ones political association advertised (I vistied the US during the election of trump vs. Clinton) - whole houses either decked out in red or blue and once again a lot of slogans. In Germany I have Never seen polictial advertising done by a private individual on their own ground ( thinking about it might be illegal to do so - we have very strickt rules about how and when political parties are allowed to advertise). This is just what I can come up with on the spot so my thesis is that Americans to tell other people a lot more about themselves and also tell others a lot more of their options to their face than Germans would.

I've never been a jealous person, and I cannot stand insecure people (I know we shouldn't hate, but I legitimately hate insecurity because it's so destructive), so it irks me so much when confidence is confused for arrogance. Assertive black women are seen as especially arrogant because most of the world's societies see us as people who should not be confident, that we're out of order if we totally love ourselves, which shouldn't take away from anyone else but "does" because people feel our self-love means we can't instead always look at them (which they're used to, meaning white folks and black men). That's why every time black women praise ourselves when no one else will, here comes a non-black woman (usually white) on some "all women" stuff. It's because they not only see us as lesser than and they more deserving of that praise but also because they're used to seeing our own people not loving us openly.

(i.e Disney movies, TV shows, celebrities, politics) usually the person who controls the narrative gets to write it. (old white guys 👦🏾) what is on media and what is shown matters so much and can change the perspective of so many. once something is accepted usually on the media then it's kinda known throughout the society. like for example being apart of the LGBTQIA community is a lot more acceptable especially when being shown on television or the media as okay. not all the way okay tho which is why they're still discriminated against or have heavy biases put on them. it really matters how people are depicted for everyone else to see. right now the only people we're getting the full sympathetic story to are white people. mostly white men. then white woman. mostly pretty people too, that's a whole thing.

I’ve been a Chloe and Halle fan for a minute now and I think there’s something to be said about how we don’t have black woman image variety in the mainstream music industry. I take no issue with Chloe doing her and feeling herself and think people are weirdos for attacking her and other black women who are embracing their sexuality overtly. However I must say I feel like the music industry is telling us hey if you’re a talented black woman wanting to break into the industry you better be ready to sell sex…which I do take a problem with and I think is sad. Before chloes big solo debut with have mercy and her feeling more sexy in her performances(AS SHE SHOULD!). A lot of black girls and young black women online-twitter would talk about how we love the fact that we have a black female duo that isn’t following the standard black woman image of a Megan,Nicki, beyonce, Rihanna e.t.c that have a sexualized image…and I love and live for these women but honestly it was DIFFERENT and nice to see a black woman get props and praise as she deserves and people giving it to her while she wasn’t being overtly sexual. Im trying to not sound misogynistic with what I’m saying as I support women being sexual and feeling good 100% but I also know that the music industry demands sexuality from black women in a way that I don’t see for white women…someone like Billie eillish and Olivia rodrigo can be celebrated and attain success without intentionally leaning into their sex appeal and I haven’t seen that kind of mainstream you’re the shit recognition maybe since lauryn hill? I don’t know if my point is coming across and I also know that Chloe should live for herself and not us and I know all women to varying degrees will be sexualized by the industry but I just think of the mainstream black women in the industry right now and all of their images are overtly sexual and I wonder if some of them also feel that this is what they have to do because society did not give Chloe and Halle the same attention they are giving solo Chloe AT ALL.

I remember that one situation in high school when I borrowed a shirt from my best friend after a sleepover. And I have a B bra cup. No one said anything bad about me all day. No one cared about the top actually. And THEN my best friend put on that exact shirt on herself few days ago. And what happened? Two teachers said it was inappropriate and the principal told her to change. And when she said “I don’t have anything to change to”, she, the principal, gave my friend a huge smelly shirt from lost-and-found box. My best friend has an E cup. It shows perfectly how people created some dumb rules about what people with certain body types can wear and cannot wear. Like, mind your business? It wasn’t even some revealing shirt! And she had to cover up because that’s how her body’s made. I was so mad that day. And honestly? I still am. And as always - your video essay is amazing. My high school has one day when seniors are allowed to wear working type clothing instead of our usual uniform. One of my friends showed up in a blouse and pencil skirt. Even though her skirt was the right length (covered the knee), she was still asked to change. This is despite the fact that many other seniors were allowed to wear a pencil skirt with no problem. I thought the principal was being silly, but now i see that it's probably because she had a curvier figure.

I think that guys attack women for what they wear because they feel ashamed that they lust after someone's body. They don't want to take responsibility for being the source of the problem so they blame the person they are lusting towards. Guys know that their behavior is problematic, but don't want to accept that, so blaming women absolves them of the guilt they have regarding their instincts/thoughts/feelings. I think a lot of guys are afraid of their thoughts so they preemptively try to solve the problem of having weird thoughts by placing the burden on women to dress less "sexual." If girls dress more conservatively then guys will have less sexual thoughts. By having women feel shame about their bodies it lessens the load on guys to feel shame because they will have less sexual thoughts. In the video you said that people are allowed to acknowledge that someone is hot, but that does not give them the right to the other person's body. Something that I realized that is similar to that is the fact that I'm allowed to feel the way I do because that's something that I can't control, but that I can control whether I react to my emotions or thoughts. Just because I am mad doesn't mean I have to burst out and yell at people. Same concept with seeing someone hot. I can acknowledge that they are hot, but I can choose to not look at them any further and to not have weird thoughts. I think the problem is that a lot of people don't recognize that they are allowed to feel how they feel and that they shouldn't feel shame. That's where I think the problem is. It's because guys feel shame about seeing someone and thinking they are hot and then having weird thoughts. No one likes to feel shame so they try to get rid of it and that gives birth to their mindset that it's women's fault for dressing sexy. When they place the blame on the women that allows straight guys to sexualize women with no guilt.

People talking about how they hope her new song shows off her vocals - please bish She wanted a performance song so she put out a performance song - and she gave amazing performances. If you want vocals - go listen to the two albums she did with her sister or go listen to the covers they did. Some always want to be dictating what artist should do and what direction they should go - like, how about no? Just sit back and enjoy or ignore what they come put with. People be trying to box this poor woman into an image they have of her, not accepting what she’s trying to tell the world about herself. Let her experiment.

Personally I've never really had that feeling of being "sexy" or "attractive", and have felt jealously towards women because of that. I feel like another point needs to be made. I was on Discord when Chloe posted her dance challenge and there was a fully grown man in there dragging her and calling her all types of names and kept saying how she’s his daughters age. I’ve noticed this trend before with straight men, if they are aroused sexually by someone they “shouldn’t” be aroused by they will lash out at that person. I’ve seen this happen when a straight man might get involuntarily aroused by a gay man and they will start to disrespect that gay man and throw slurs at him or constantly speak on their disdain for gay people. That guy on Discord probably felt being attracted to a young woman his daughters age was inappropriate (though she is an adult) and wanted to “punish” and insult Chloe because it’s somehow her fault for arousing him. The topics of sexuality and sexual attraction is still so taboo and we need to start having HONEST conversations about it. Like real, in depth, lay all the ugly truths on the table kind of conversations.

Haven’t watched the entire video but ngl something about this topic triggers something within me. I think my gripes with Chloe’s Have Mercy era isn’t the fact that it’s sexual, just that it is so aggressively sexual in nature. Music videos, performances. It’s gotten to the point where I hesitate and end up not clicking on any new posts or videos because I just get very uncomfortable with some of the things she does. I’m guessing this issue is going to be addressed in the video but imo being 17 and black, I’m just tired of black girls only being promoted by the media once they become overtly sexually (keyword being overtly) and it seems that that’s where they’re personas and personalities begin and end. I know some people think that the people criticising her new image are just haters hiding behind constructive criticism (many are) but some of us really just want to emphasize and show her that we like her music, her voice, her talent. We appreciate her body but it’s not the only thing we’re here for. It sucks that celebrities fall victim to people’s unpredictably shifting perspectives on subjects. I wish she could just live and explore her life without the baggage that comes with having to retain a respectable image and the image of younger black girls against the misogynoir that comes from the world but at the moment that’s just wishful thinking. Black girls understand that we’re nuanced but the rest of the world does not. There’s a part of me that wants to prove that we aren’t always preoccupied with sex and everything associated with it ( toxic Ik, I’m working on it). But that’s not her responsibility to take on. This is why I’m just taking this as a challenge to not say anything and allow people to grow and come into themselves. I don’t watch her videos but I do stream her and Halle’s music ALOT and so do a lot of my friends. We want to see her win.

I agree. I’m an OF fan, and this pivot by Chlöe wouldn’t be as alarming if it felt like SHE wanted to be sexualized because it was her desire. Not what sells. Every video feels like Chlöe’s cosplaying at being someone else’s idea of sexy. She’s super talented. Yet, the world only knows her for one lackluster song. This evolution reminds of CxH’s song, “Simple,” being played out in real time. Chlöe seems to have realized no one wanted her when she and her sister were covered and making quirky and unique beats. So, she’s now going the hypersexual route to project herself into mainstream. My biggest gripe is Chlöe NEVER appears at pease or ease being others image of sexuality. I get Eloho’s point. I just wish Chlöe, like Lizzo, would keep herself offline doing her exploration phase into her sexuality to protect herself from being emotionally battered. She’s seems like such a sweet person. But, appears to want outward validation too much making her an easy target to be bullied online.

I am actually a huge Chloe fan, but I think the issue people have with this new “version” of her is that it doesn’t seem authentic. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with her expressing her sexuality and showing out, because her body is FIRE. She just doesn’t ooze effortless sexuality. It comes across as forced and cringeworthy at times because it just doesn’t seem natural. I think that she’ll figure out what genuinely works for her in time. We can't know what is genuine for her, because we aren't her, and we don't know all off how she expresses herself sexually, behind closed doors (nor do we need to, that's her business). The only reason some people feel it's forced is that they are uncomfortable with how overtly sexual, she is. But that's yall's problem, not hers. You can't project your feelings of discomfort onto her and make up nonsense about it not being who she really is, just because you don't like seeing it for whatever reason. It's fine if you don't, but it's not because it's inauthentic, because you can't say that for sure, when you don't know her personally. And being a huge fan of hers, and watching her grow up, doesn't equate to knowing exactly when Chloe is being her true self and when she isn't. It's enough to just say, you don't like seeing her that way, and not be worried people will call you a hater. You don't have to force this "it's not organic to who she really is", narrative, to justify that opinion. Just have that opinion, without also making baseless assumptions about the woman.

My opinion is that Chloe’s overt sexuality looks forced. It’s my opinion, to which I’m entitled. No, I don’t know her personally. I don’t know whether she’s a sexual being behind closed doors or not, nor do I care. There's still no basis for saying that is forced, just because it "looks" that way to you for whatever reason. Pointing out that a lot of people share the opinion that it's forced and not genuine to her, doesn't make it any less based on nothing. But people can have that opinion, and feel to express it all day, as long as they know that they can't actually be sure what's natural to her and what's not.

Isn't she also like 22?! Everything you said is spot on per usual. She's still so young and figuring herself out so I will always offer grace in the face of that. I don't know why people act like most of us weren't just like her at some point in our younger years. Or maybe still there which is okay! The only difference is that she's coming into herself in front of the whole world. Seems like she has a great support system around her though which I'm glad to see.

Incredible video! I'm mostly commenting to help boost you in the algorithm, but do y'all think that part of this issue is how racist stereotypes have frequently depicted black women as "masculine"? Like it seems to me that part of the outrage at Chloe Bailey, Megan Thee Stallion, etc comes from anger that they are "succeeding" in feminity in a way that's supposed to be reserved for white women

Humility is a HUGE part of purity culture in Christianity as well, which I think has a big impact on American society at large. The Bible is not very supportive of women, unfortunately, and the few passages that do discuss women directly are mostly about humility and duty to one's husband and home. While the Bible does warn against "lustful thoughts," women's clothing is much easier to police.

I don't have a ton of background on Chloe - I didn't follow her child acting career, I also haven't really been aware of her social media presence, so the only context I have on her 'image' is the transition she made from Chloe&Halle to her solo career. I've seen a couple of their interviews, and it's very clear that Chloe is a kind of a lovable nerd, and obviously a talented young woman. I agree with every point in this video, so just adding my thoughts. Chloe's agency (as far as her sudden overt sexuality) in the context of how aggressively prescriptive the music industry is with the image of female artists (especially black women) is what's questionable to me. It seems manufactured, and FOR the male gaze primarily, like some kind of a fucked up requirement of success. As in, if you're a black woman in R'n'B *AND* you are curvy then you *HAVE TO* gyrate and show your whole body, because there's no other way you can or should be seen. Basically, I hope is that Chloe is actually growing into her sexual power naturally and not being coerced by the media machine, music execs and warped societal expectations of what 'growing up' looks like for a woman.

Lord have mercy, I am so tired of folks deputizing themselves as modesty police and policing other people's bodies and actions in those bodies. The respectability politics are strong within this topic too. There is a history of not only the dominant group but religious groups policing the female form. Some folks in these groups are having trouble relinquishing control, letting go of the "protector" role they think they play, and do not know how to sit with discomfort. Just because something makes a person uncomfortable doesn't mean another person owes the person in discomfort anything. As I watched, I am reminded of how much more Black women's bodies have been more heavily, disproportionately policed. Our bodies, hair, speech. In school, I was so keenly aware of how the dress code was enforced mostly on Black girls, particularly with figures, yet white peers especially less curvy were given a pass to wear the shortest shorts and skirts. They were not sexualized and put under the same moral scrutiny. They were allowed to innocently exist. Until sex itself is less demonized, women deemed more desirable and/or sexual will continue to be policed/humbled by the groups seeking to gatekeep morality and respectability.

Self love isn’t just an act of appreciation, it’s also an indirect act of feminism, because in a world that is so insistent on black women portraying one appearance standard and personality type, it is a show of resilience and soft power to say that we love our personalities and our appearances enough to be our unapologetic selves. If you can’t do it out of love, do it out of spite.

That part about fear of envy. Obeah and all kinds a black magic our parents warned us against. People steal and curse your things, so much more. Which is why, I try to play dumb, or downplay my beauty (sounds weird but I don't mean that in a bad way) not because of virtue signalling but because standing out comes with a cost. One that can be very bad. So most times, I don't show up physically or try to be hot, even for myself because I know the attention I would get and I don't want to pay the price for it. Or pretend to be absent minded in classes and so on because people can be dreadful.

Is it just me, or does the obsession with “humble women” have some ties with the obsession with the ingenue? Like society loves the idea of a young woman who just came into their own and doesn’t know how good they look yet. It’s pretty infantilizing to assume that beautiful women should always be like “who me???” and not be aware of the power they might hold.

Her sis shows skin too and has bikini pics but no one comes for her. Why? Because no one feels uncomfortable with her sister's beauty. But Chloe has the body of a goddess and it makes women who aren't built that way feel a way, mostly insecure. We need to stop feeling insecure and appreciate our own unique beauty. Chloe is stunning and still growing and learning. Why should she hide or be apologetic for her feminity? Her and her sis can wear the same outfit but Chloe will always get more "hate" and cover up comments.

Pretty privilege's downside. It can be actually really terrifying sometimes when people get mad at you for them being attracted to you but you not being interested. I remember many times when a man got angry at me because I just said 'no thank you' to whatever his request was and said that I was the one that made him come up to me...Maybe because I wore makeup, or did my hair nice, or wore some clothes THEY liked. I actually wonder how much this happens to women in general... I literally live in a foreign country so I dunno who most of the people you are talking about are, but I thoroughly enjoyed the convos. Also your points about humility I totally agree with. I have realized if you humble yourself then people will treat you nicer, but if you're actually honest and the other person feels weaker than you then they will hate you. (noticed this at work, so I just stay humble at work and be myself outside of work) I've come to feel that its attractive only because you relinquish power to them and they feel they can control you.

It never happens to me because I’m a minor who never goes outside, when I do go outside I wear mini skirts and such but I don’t get comments about it (at least to my face) in public probably because of my petite frame. My body type isn’t considered desirable, but it’s not a body type that people actively are prejudged against. So I’m invisible to unwanted eyes (men), the comments I get are all from girls and that makes me happy cause I’m lesbian lol.

It happens to me all the time, at work, at the store, minding my own business. I’ve been threatened, and received a lot of aggressive backlash from politely expressing disinterest in other’s pursuits, if not relentless pressuring to entertain interactions I’m not interested in. It’s harder because I’m asexual and aromatic and people (especially men) seem to pretend to not comprehend how I am not interested in them just because they express interest in me. I understand that I am considerably attractive to others, but it’s irrelevant to me in most areas of my life. Not just that, even people who are not interested (usually women) will express disdain and go out of their way to be mean if they think I receive preferential treatment because of my appearance or if they feel I’m not humble enough (which I refuse to accept as I believe humility is a useless denial of reality), maybe stemming from their own insecurities. I usually keep to myself and don’t go out of my way to attract attention from others, but I recently decided hiding myself is a way these people win and is a waste of effort on my part.

She was really like this for a while and then suddenly decided that was too much and that being like that was not reflective of herself, now she went back to her “roots” (covering up more, singing country music, not smoking as much) and now she’s respected again. Was that her decision to “go back” or was it all of the pressure of society? I honestly don’t know. I get what people say about Chloe but who cares? She is doing what she wants and as long as she ain’t hurting no one, live your life girl 👏🏾👏🏾

I wish I had the space to do this when I was a teen and didn't have so much trauma to heal from in my 20's. If I wore a well-fitting women's suit even, I'd be seen as wearing inappropriate work attire while a slim woman wearing the exact same style would be respected. I don't need a different body to be worth listening to and respecting, everyone just needs to change their minds.

I feel like the humble thing being attractive is because women with low self esteem are easier to win over. so an attractive humble woman will supposedly be easier to win over, ie less attractive/ rich men can pull them or men in general can win them over with less effort than women who understand their value and expect people to reach their standards in order to get close.
