Shunsui's shikai is based on children's games and his bankai is based on theatre plays for adults. We know this because the play shunsui is telling is a suicide story of a couple, a man and a woman. Lillie Barro is the man, Shunsui is the woman. I8n Act 1: because the man hit the woman, he feels great shame as if the wounds he inflicted he can also feel them (and it becomes real damage). Act 2: the man starts feeling even worse for what he did and develops a sickness because of this great shame. Act 3: as a way to atone the man drops into a endless ocean hoping to drown and the woman also drowns with him because she pities him. However, the man becomes a coward, starting to swim up to the surface abandoning his promise to drown along with the woman. Act 4: As a result of all this, the woman wanting to get rid of the man's regret and cowardness, cuts his throat and then she drowns, as if the promise they made was never broken. Shunsui is the only character I can imagine who has a good reason to explain his abilities. Like he says, it’s only when both players know the rules, is when it can really be called a game.

It also doesn't really matter since there's a shitload of possible games his shikai can play. If he explains what some of them do, his enemy might let their guard down since they know how that game works. Like even here Lilie got caught of guard by the shadow afterimage then almost got caught by Kageoni (even though he should know that one from their intel). Stark at least had the skill to realize that the games aren't effects exclusive to Shunsui, whereas Lillie's pride would probably never even let him consider utilizing Shunsui's abilities against him.

Anyways, Reikaku = Spirit Sense And the ‘Dharma Doll Fell Down/Bodhidharma Falls Down’ that Lilie Barro recognized as ‘chocolate ingles’ from Spain are both similar, if not identical to Red-Light, Green-Light as a children’s game, which is the gist of Shunsui’s Shikai abilities and like all Bankais, his is the Adult/Inverse version of that concept. The Theatrical Bankai: KatenKyōkotsu Karamatsu Shinjū (Bones of Heavenly Blooming Madness: Withering Pine Lovers' Suicide/ Flower Crazed Heaven Bone Spirit Withered Pine Love Suicide) To release, Shunsui holds his Shikai out in front of him with the blades pointing down, which prompts several black tendrils to extend out from him like shadows (resembling ink-drawn pine branches) while his Zanpakutō Spirit, Katen or ‘Ohana’ manifests behind him who was revealed along with most other Zanpakutō Spirits in the anime canon Zanpakutō Rebellion arc (Eps 230 - 265) as the best in anime. As for Lilie Barro’s transformation, it’s his Vollständig/Voll Stern Dich: ‘Ziliel’ (Judgment of God) which is based on the biblically accurate Seraphim angels since he’s the 1st Quincy to be granted a Schrift by Yhwach as the ‘closest to God’ and has power over the ethereal light itself.

The nature of Shunsui’s bankai reflects a lot of untold personality. His Shikai is a playful thing that makes games it’s power whereas his bankai is the reenactment of a poem of regret ending in a man taking his own life in despair. Shunsui is a man who dresses colourfully, acts playful and talks glib but deep down harbours a lot of regrets and dark thoughts he doesn’t like to show.

Some details about my 2nd favorite bankai in Bleach. Katen Kyokotsu has the ability to turn children games into reality, and the bankai turns theater plays into reality. The play follows a man (Barro) who starts sharing the pain he inflicted on someone (Shunsui), gets stricken with a disease because of guilt, jumps into a river to atone, and finally dies. Katen's favorite plays are tragedies, so using it brings a lot of risks to both Shunsui and his comrades since a protagonist dying in tragedies is pretty common

So for anyone confused about Lillie Barou and Shunsui’s abilities, here’s an explanation: Lillie Barro as the first Quincy to be granted powers from Yhwach (his Schrift) is closest to the god-like figure, so he transforms into something resembling biblically accurate Seraphim (angel with 4 pairs of wings). His power the X-axis allows him to (a) fire shots that penetrate anything in a line, and (b) allow his body to phase through (penetrate) anything else. A more accurate summation of his powers would honestly be the term of “planes” in mathematics. Shunsui’s shikai manifests childrens’ games into reality. He doesn’t always get to choose which game because his Zanpukto is petty like that sometimes. While his opponents will also know the rules for the games to start, Shunsui still has the advantage because he knows the meta. Unless the opponent is a super genius at games like that, Shunsui will usually win. For his bankai, theatre plays are manifested into reality, while the surroundings are affected to have a more gloomy, depressing, and chilling atmosphere. Kubo has confirmed that Shunsui can pull off anything as long as it makes sense in the context of a theatre play and the one he used this time is only one such play.

I love the themed progression from shikai to bankai for example Soi fon's shikai killing in 2 hits while the bankai is rocket that's (supposed) to kill with 1 hit Shinji's shikai changing your sense of direction and bankai changing sense of alliance and Shunsui going from childish games to a tragic play about a couple. Also the reason Shunsui didn't even try to use it during fake katakura town arc is cause if someone smart enough (like aizen) analyzes it and understands it they can alter or prevent the story from playing out.

His form, while it is weird looking, it is meant to resemble a Bibical Accurate depiction of an Angel or Seramphim. Once you realize what Kubo is going for then the form actually works and is indeed meant to be "Godly" or something Divine... a form we mere mortals are not meant to understand.

Lupa is essentially right each act was a different way for an opponent to die , so if the opponent would die at any act before the last the act would end on that note. His Shikai & Bankai are basically childs games but lethally
