This week we got the news that the Yamaha R6 is no more. At least, after the 2020 model year. That's right, Yamaha is going to stop selling the most popular 600cc class motorcycle of all time (in road legal form). Today, we talk about why they're doing this, what's to come, and shed a few tears.

If you can get to your 40’s/50’s without accruing a bunch of street Rossi slips and points for stupidity it’s not that much. ZX14R policy for me full coverage 9/3 policy 736 bucks. The writing has been on the wall for a while. When Kawasaki introduced the refreshed ZX6R for a much lower entry price of $9999, it was clear to me that they were trying to resuscitate a dying segment. Honda obviously hasn't updated the CBR600RR for years with the exception of the new 600RR that is only being sold in Japan and Australia. The middleweight sport bike class is moving away from the race replica format. Look at the new Aprilia RS660. The Ducati Super Sport is another bike, albeit a little more expensive. Both bikes have more comfortable ergos and more street-friendly suspension. The popularity of naked bikes is dominating the middleweight class. Triumph is introducing the new budget friendly Trident to compete against the MT07, Z650, etc. Aprilia is going to have a Tuono 660 soon. Ducati has their Monster 797. I am not sure how much longer the big investment in liter class bikes will go on. Those aren't exactly flying off showroom floors, even with bike shortages. Ridenow Georgetown has a 2020 base R1 marked down to under $14k. Last year, Honda had a ton of two model year old 1000RRs leftover that were being sold incredibly cheap. Most people who can afford $15-20K for a motorcycle are older and unable or no longer willing to endure that riding position.

I was thinking the same thing, a new engine coming in the next coming years which will be used for the new R7. The MT07 would then get a redesign with this new R7 engine. I'm aware of how they come to the conclusion but it's still bullshit for a sales rep to without even looking at anything, (he responded immediately without any time to have been able to have searched anything.) just say “I won’t insure those crotch rockets.”. He then also had no issue insuring my dad’s monster 1200, a far more powerful bike than the r6 lol. It kinda makes sense... People start realizing how much more comfortable nakeds are and how fun they are. Torque is fun and it's what gives you the rush. HP is what gives the top speed, but torque is what gets you to that top speed... They also have usable power as they provide more torque in the lower range. You can also track the nakeds with the right mods. With the 600cc supersports gone.. Manufacturers will now trickle the technology from those bikes to nakeds. Things like fully adjusted suspension may start becoming more available for the affordable nakeds which is very good. Not a lot of nakeds now come with fully adjusted forks.

It would be really nice if motorcycle manufactures were to make 500cc super sports. I think a 500cc inline 4 with a similar bore and stroke instead of the 600's tiny stroke would be a lot of fun. I imagine something like that could get pretty good gas mileage as well and still have that inline 4 sound.

3 years ago. I purchased my first bike. It was only after I got a glimpse of a beautifully blacked out R6 that got buying a bike stuck in my head. Granted the guy riding it was a complete “squid.” You know the type. No helmet, jacket or even pants(shorts.) 2 Flagships for me. The R6, one mean machine I dreamt about and the “squid” I never wanted to be like. It’s sad to see it go. Hell, even the WR250R! Holy hell! I bought one this year all supermoto’d out and I LOVE the thing. Regardless, now I own one ruthless MT-09 that still scares me. The never boring “I’m going to rip your arms off” feeling. A WR250R that has me yearn for balance point and hooligan antics. I always just thought I’m not cool enough for an R6 or a super sport. In the back of my mind I always felt like that idiot who says that’s too much for the streets. In all reality, I think I’m just slightly a head of the crowd, I don’t want to be leaned forward 90 percent of the time, back and Butt aches from long rides, I don’t want to be over 10,000 rpm just to feel a bikes true grunt. I want comfort, uptight seating positions, torque on tap and a bike everyone rolls up and asks “Man! What is that!?” 😏 Nakeds are truly where the market is and has been headed. My only regret, as if I would really consider it a regret, was not trying the MT-07 first. Only because it is somewhat a better fit for stunt work. Hooligan at 31 years old! 😎

Even on street its just such a smooth, enjoyable ride. But idk if I'd buy one brand new for about double the price I paid for mine. If I was to buy a new bike I'd be most likely looking at the V2, F3 800, or hopefully triumph releases a redisigned 765 daytona pushing 140-150 hp. The problem with the 600 class is that they've reached its limit. The brand new releases offer little to no upgrades/extra performance to their predecessors so it makes very little sense to purchase new vs used. Litre bikes on the other hand are still recieving upgrades/updates which incentivises the purchase of newer models.

I used to ride dirt bikes when I was younger, so the concept was there, just needed and still need to put into practice what I know. I also got my permit earlier this month and am looking forward to quite a few track days next year. I know a lot of people say you shouldn't get a 600 as a first bike, but it's what I basically started out on and riding it for several months now, am getting more comfortable and used to it so I would say, as long as you respect the bike, you should have no problem riding whatever you start out on. I would never need that kind of power especially living in Vegas where I would never use it, hence why I’ve been looking into 600’s where the power is there when/if I need it but it won’t be so intimidating. Euro 5 regulations effected the r1 a lot and caused them to have to put future planned tech into it to keep up with 4 catalytic converters for eu version. So there is no way you can slap 4 cats in an r6 and still keep similar horsepower. Regulations killed it. Only way to keep up with them is a 1000cc. They had to make the engine significantly more effecient to hold up against 4 cats. My usa 2020 r1 has 1 gigantic cat on it. Taking it off will result in significantly more hp than 2019 r1 due to 2020 engine having huge upgrades for the forced emissions regulations. Thats why r6 no longer. Plus r6 was like 13,000 dollars. It would be awesome if Yamaha made an r7 with the mt07 motor retuned for more top end. And maybe make it a little more comfortable to ride on the street than the r6.

I’ve had a 2003 R6 for a little while now and before hearing about this today I was thinking about trading it for an FZ/MT-07/09. More practical for city riding and cruising and is still good on highway

As a long time R6 fan and owner of a 2012, I was bummed to see this horrible decision by Yamaha. However, still will be plently out on the street and tracks, parts still be selling.

Just bought a 08 r6 amd I hope to flip it for a good profit looking at how rare they’re at the moment. In the meantime I’ll be buzzin around town in this classic bike .
