The gain is actually how much of the mic signal gets picked up. It's how you reduce background noise. You want your gain as low as possible to not pick up background noise or wire interference noise or whatever, but you want it high enough to catch all the frequencies of the signal that you want. The higher you can get the gain without getting background noise or distorting the signal, the better and more crisp it will sound.

so, would you recommend this over an interface like a focusrite or similar? purists will say that the digital converters in a usb mixer are not as good as in the standalone interfaces and are not as good for recording. any thoughts on this? I mean, you sound great on it, so there's that.
@FunnyGuyTimmy4 жыл бұрын
A $100 mixer of really any brand will probably be lower quality than a $100 interface line the Scarlet for sure. That is due to what features are included and how the company had to cut some quality corners to make the mixer as low in cost as the interface. How ever once you go past $200 in name brand mixers and interfaces, the line starts to blur. The mixer that I have was sold at over $300 when I bought it. Now you can get it for $200. I like using mixers over interfaces because of the features that interfaces don't have. Things like EQ and compression for example. The choice of what to buy all depends on use and skills. If you don't know how to use a mixer or a chained system, just get an interface.

set you gain so the red peak light just comes on then back off a notch or 2 so it does not come back on then your gain will be properly set for that item then you use the level from there for over all volume,, compression is for adding punch and dynamics for volcals which can affect the gain a bit so make sue to also watch the peak led add the compression you need then back off the gain if you need to or just back the compression back off a nothc ... you can also use the hi pass filter on volcals as well but do not use this unless you need to not everyones voice needs to have the filter applied,, the pad will cut the DB levels back on hi gain input devices study the manule and learn the board in and out is the best over all then experiment with things once you understand the manule

Actually gain is the amplification applied to the INPUT in the channel. Volume is the level sent to the OUTPUT. It's easier to think of a guitar amp. You can increase the gain to the point of distortion, to create a certain type of sound. (i.e. a rock guitar) and then the volume allows you to set the level of that distorted, high gain input to the main amplification.

Closed back headphones going into a decent interface will almost always sound better than speakers. Reason being you are isolating your ears from all other sound sources and focusing on just what you want to hear. I am sure there are some setups that will sound better with speakers, but that's more in the thousand dollar range.

Andrew M. Sheppard thanks for the tip. I guess my main issue is I feel like when using the mixer I get way more background noise. Dumb question: I wanna combine Sounds from Logic Pro with sounds from my Roland synthesizer. I'm new to this and I wanna buy this mixer to do exactly that. Does that do the job? I guess that to record the whole thing I'd have to like "collect" the whole sound (Mac & Synth) in the mixer and send it back to Logic Pro. Because right now I can only use the one or the other. THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR ANSWERING! Hugs % Kisses.
@FunnyGuyTimmy6 жыл бұрын
mtsmtsmtsmts well it would depend on what the synth has available for audio or connection out. I don’t think there is a build in way of connecting a midi line into the mixer but if the synth has a 1/4 inch then it should be as easy as plugging a 1/4 inch into the synth and one of the mixer’s channels. But I am not 100% sure. I don’t do music and only ever connect mics to this device.

There is no way of doing that with this mixer. The effects go through each channel. You would need multiple smaller mixers with effects then rout them into one interface or mixer to then feed out. The mixer I have now runs for $200 so I doubt you could do this for less.

@FunnyGuyTimmy6 жыл бұрын
Antoine Inniss pass on those kinds of preamps. Unless you are doing analog radio. The more things you have connected the more noise you introduce. The Yamaha mixer has great preamps and compression you don’t need anything else. If you have a mic that needs more gain that this mixer/interface can handle than get rid of that mic. Get yourself something that is more reasonable. And if you hear from someone you need that kind of setup to do VO, I wouldn’t trust their advice.
