I appreciate the video! How do you feel like it compares in terms of sounds to software? I'm just getting back into music after years of not doing much. I've got Komplete and am looking for a keyboard now. I was debating buying a true midi controller like the Arturia KeyLab MK2 49 or a MODX or MX workstation that actually adds more sounds as well. I know they're different animals but what are your thoughts on some of the acoustic instruments like brass, strings, EPs, etc. in the MODX/MX vs Komplete and a midi keyboard?

I'm a hardware guy, I like the immediate interaction you can get with hardware, however, I do think software sounds great and many times can be a bit more detailed depending on the sound. That said...I don't think you can go wrong with a nice keyboard, especially since most have USB and can act as MIDI controllers as well.

Very nice! About to upgrade from the MX61. I use the wheels a lot and that’s key in the genre I play so I’m skeptical about the upwards location. I know it sounds silly but it matters to me. Because of that, I’m also considering the MOXF6. What are your thoughts on that?

Thanks bro! On these the DAW integration is mainly audio in/out, and on the Montage you have DAW remote control. They don't have a plugin like the Motif one, they have a control software but it's not an editor like how the Motif one was. The plus side is all the Motif sounds are here as well, and it they are compatible with all the Motif libraries lol. But I know you like racks :)

Ahh understood. I really wish they would bring back something like the Motif plugin editor with studio recall. I always thought that was way ahead of it's time being able to control everything on the Motif and save all settings in the plugin with any session. They stopped supporting it and doesn't work in 64 bit DAWs :( either way, this could be a nice main controller keyboard plus having access to montage sounds which I personally think the yamaha workstation sounds are second to none. Looking forward to seeing more of your content on this.... and yes bro, still dreaming of a new montage rack with all those great sounds and a plugin editor 😎

Thanks for watching. I think transpose would be a function of the connected keyboard and not so much the MODX, as you'd just be setting which notes to send from your external keyboard. I do not think it would actually change the notes you play from the MODX itself.

Finally a digital synth worth purchasing. And the price. I would have gone with the Montage (because of the 4 analog outputs) but the MoDX is 1/2 the price for 98% of the synth. I will just have to use the 10 USB outputs. I am looking forward to hearing more about your comparison to the Montage. For the MoDX to be less than 1/2 the price Yamaha must of cut out lots of good stuff like power transformers, keyboard quality, case quality.

Yeah man, it's crazy, so far it really looks like things such as build quality, the amount of flash ram, controls, polyphony, aftertouch, etc. But as far as the synth engine itself, it is practically the same. And the size is so much smaller than the Montage as well. Don't get me wrong, I love the Montage, and prefer it, as I'm so used to it at this point, but I think the MODX will be a very popular synth and I wouldn't be upset with having it if I didn't have a Montage. I'm sure there will be more that I find different but for the price, I they have a winner.

i have a Montage 7 and i'm thinking of buying the MODX8 (it's lighter and has a weighted keybed). I'm curious about if it is any sound difference between them (due to the converters) and the thing that i'm really curious is if i can use the 8 part performances i make on my Montage on the MODX ( i've read that only four parts have seamless sound switching on the MODX, but i'll be careful when playing). Thanks for the tutorials too i'm glad i found your channel. :)

The 8 parts should be fine as long as you keep in mind the SSS, I hadn't heard of that limit to 4 parts but if you seen that and are already aware you should be fine. I know library/perf wise they load the same things. If you have a specific performance you want me to test hit me up and I can try it for you.

If your organ has MIDI output, you can plug that into the MIDI in of your Montage and trigger it. I don't know your setup or the organ but if it can send MIDI you can control anything that receives MIDI.

Yes, but only with performances that have up to 4 parts. On the Montage this works with performances with up to 8 parts.

Hey bro, I'm really close to getting Modx6, but I wanna know if i can create my own drum Tracks from scratch on this. I don't see a pattern mode to create drum tracks like on the other keyboards. I do understand this is not a workstation but a synthesizer. And most workstations have this function. If it can be done please make video. Thanks

There are no pattern tracks on here, I'm not sure if you can use the arp to make custom drum patterns or not, but there's definitely not a pattern sequencer.

You can hook it up via USB/Midi and sequence multiple tracks. Or you can record audio directly into your daw.

You should be able to do it but I'm not sure I haven't setup a split on it personally.

Jayasurya .p.s. You can have up to 8 parts simultaneously under keyboard control, and an additional 8 parts MIDI controlled through your DAW. You can set the note range of each part and split/layer the keyboard any way you like. Extremely flexible. You can mix the parts and fade them in and out using the faders manually. Additionally, you can have multiple assignable parameters on each part, and control them all at once with the super knob. For instance, you could have the performance start as a solo piano and have reverb depth increase on the piano, and have the pad and bass fade in as you increase the knob. You can even get wild with some effects at the top end. There are so many possibilities.

dude just keep the motif you can just buy and download the CFX sound just buy it online at the Yamahamusicsoft.com You can get your stuff there trust me. You can even find better sounds then the Montage. Keep your Motif XF8. The MODX doesn’t have a good Keybed. Or just get the new Yamaha CP88 it has all the piano sounds of the Montage but just keep your Motif tho

I have a montage 6 which has an excellent keybed but is a bit heavy for carrying around, and I tried out a modx6 at a store, I have to say the keybed on the modx 6 is really not good at all, to the point where iI feel it's not really useable as a musical instrument, the sounds are great but the keybed is really poor, like the mx or roland FA 6 or some cheap midi controller. Never mind all the comparisons, if the keybed on the instrument is not up to par then whats the point in going any further. As far as I can tell all these kind of rompler/synth boards from all makers in this price range have poor quality keybeds with no aftertouch. Such a shame.

It also has rhythm..which the Montage does not have, and apparently..a matrix that interprets a beat by what you're playing. If true, that's dope. Montage was just too much synth for me. Wanted it, but the price was a very strong deterrent. This one, I got. A pretty legitimate, hi tech synth, for half the price of Montage. I got the 61, because it's super compact, but still very powerful, at a very reasonable price. I compared the stats side by side to Montage and technically, they are much closer than one would think given the price difference I've researched the hell out of this synth, and in my view, it's a superior value. I can't justify the price difference. That being said, if I was really commercial, I'd have both. But for now, this is way more than enough. I love it..understandably scaled down, but the power is still there.

Yeah, it's a great synth man! Yeah it has a dedicated button for the rhythm section, and a few other things the Montage doesn't, even simple things like a USB volume knob lol. I'm going to have fun comparing and seeing what all the differences are. Congrats on the purchase, definitely keep me posted as you learn it in terms of tips and tricks you find or things you are enjoying about it!

@@SoundsAndGear Word, I watched Bo' Beats video on it, does a very nice job of getting into it, and revealed it's depth. He says it's a "massive synth". And from what I've seen, have to agree. Mine should arrive tomorrow. Yamaha has failed to get me excited since the Moxf, with anything. I was immediately on board with this. For nearly a year, I wanted somethin' "like" Montage but, nothing captured me. When I saw how they got that 61 crammed in there..it was like POW! Exactly..what I wanted. Going to make some interesting soundscapes with that super knob.

I'd say it feels similar to a MIDI controller, very light and plastic feeling. Of course that's the idea behind it, where the Montage is Aluminum Alloy, this one is plastic making it lighter and with less controls to make it smaller.

Let us hear the difference in the AD input convertors. Plug the montage into the MODX and let us hear. Then Plug the MODX into the Montage and let us hear. Use same preset piano to test.

You're still going to be hearing the output of each unit as the input goes through the DA/Output in the end. I already plan to plug the MODX into the Montage to see what it sounds like coming out of the Montage, if it sounds any different, or you can tell the difference between them through the same output.

@@SoundsAndGear The Montage and the MODX have the same DACs. Output quality will be the same. The MODX ADCs are not as good as the Montage's. Its this that I want you to test.

Montage has the "Pure Analog Circuit", which the MODX doesn' t have. It's this output stage that is proposed as being different between them. The Montage is promoted as outputing a more clear, rich, harmonic reproduction of sound. I want to see if it changes anything in how the MODX sounds.

Lots of hardware has firmware available after it ships, products are manufactured months ahead of time once they are stable but firmware and OS is constantly improved or expanded. With the Montage/MODX, they have very frequent firmware updates they are constantly evolving the platform which is why I dig it.

I have a MODX7 & MX88, now let's ignore the FMX engine for a bit, the AWM2 sounds to me are pretty much the same but it's the editability is much better on the MODX, but with both AWM2 & FMX together I think the MODX is very versatile.

I never used the Motif XF but I'd probably pick it personally because I'd imagine the keybed and build quality would be a bit better. However, MODX has a touch screen and the FMX engine, so it really depends on what type of sounds and functionality you want. I'm mainly into these type of boards for their instruments more than the synth side of it, but I do like having both on the Montage/MODX.

Yeah, I hear ya on the sequencer man. The Montage (and MODX) aren't workstations like the Motif series, they are more performance synths, they ship with Cubase for sequencing. I know that was a big question when the Montage first came out but by the time I got my hands on one I understood what it was so I just approached it like a sound module/synth and not an all in one piece.

Good vid bro. Yea i really wasn't diggin it myself. I went up to guitar center yesterday initially to buy the 6 but was turned off immediately by how cheap it felt. It sounds good & is nice to look at but after laying my hands on it i wasn't all that impressed with it after thumbing through all the sounds. So I ended up going home with omnisphere2 instead lol

As always, the best thing to do is try for yourself, this definitely will not be for everyone!

The plastics do feel like a slight step down from the MOXF. I feel like if they at least put some soft touch pitch and mod wheels instead of the cheap plastic ones from the MX series it would improve the feel significantly. $1300 still isn’t THAT inexpensive lol. I also feel like they used the same keys from the MX this time because the MOXF keys felt better if I recall. They might have had to cut it down even more than before because they opted to keep the touch screen as is, and it has more memory, more expensive electronics than the MOXF at the same price.

Alan Chapman The MOXF 8 keys feel much better than the MODX 8 I’m telling you the truth. I have the Montage 8 personally and it is nuts but...if you want a MODX get a MODX if you want a nice Keybed get an FA 08

Reface isn’t the past. How many people were walking around with portable authentic sounding Rhodes, Wurlys, Clavs, and CPs in one keyboard? Or a DX that could be programmed easily with touch controls, a convincing analog modeled polysynth or organs? Personally, I don’t know what the benefit would be to not include all the AWM2 sounds and engine. Is there an advantage to only having FM-X? Maybe an FM-X module that’s only got the programming controls sold for under $500 would be appealing.

Mmmmm. It's strange how many people wrongly call it MOD-X... even folks who should know better! It is MO-DX (Motif+DX7-expanded engine). I just got a MO-DX7 and I'm amazed at how vast its abilities are. It's important to understand scenes and assign 1 and 2 buttons. Lots of good stuff happens there. Thanks for the video.

It's a shame all these videos don't show how noisy the keys are, Yamaha offered to take my board in and get oiled? Yes they said oiled. But I decided to live with it and just turn up my headphone volume, didn't want to be without it, it's so good.

The pulsing light on the knob can either have the tempo pulsing disabled or just turn the light off completely. I’d be hard pressed to turn down a keyboard for one aesthetic choice I found displeasing though.

Bought one and returned ASAP for modx8 because of the extremely plastic and fragile key bed on the modx6 an 7. Not worth the $1400 and $1700 US $. Save and get the x8.

Yeah, the keyboard is definitely not on the level of the Montage, but depending on what you're going for, it can get the job done.

I was considering one of these until I played it in the store. Feels like a toy or a magnus chord organ. Junk key bed. I was pretty surprised being Yamaha and all. I have a couple of 88 key controller boards, but still really turned off by the bed enough to rule it out. Now considering the MODX8. I don't understand why the designers/engineers at Yamaha would make such garbage and ruin a fairly nice little board.

Yep, the keybed is definitely not the best. That was the intention though, more affordable, portable, etc. The Montage keybed is great though.

@@SoundsAndGear which is cool yet silly. If you dont own a midi keyboard with aftertouch but want the Modx... You also have to buy a keyboard with aftertouch as well. Double deal breaker

@@SoundsAndGear titles sometime do not explain everything on the video and many titles sometime show other different things and generally speaking even specified title repeat most common things about keyboard that beginners or intermediate already know and do not explain the capacity what a keyboard can do and how it works, always playing some sounds or playing style ect. Sorry if i said something to upset you but my comment was general as i could said for other video as well.

It is me sharing my initial thoughts after plugging it up, specifically compared to the Montage in terms of layout, build quality, etc. Thanks.

@@SoundsAndGear The effects cover and mask the real piano sound coming from the Modx. It sounds good. But it's a small sample quality compared to a 6gb Native Instruments Alecia Keys piano or a 6gb German Grand in a Korg Krome for $999

Cool. I never messed with the KORG boards personally, I really don't get caught up in the sample size, programming can do wonders with small samples. But I've heard great things about the Korg piano also.
