YAMAHA MOTIF-RACK XS Demo&Review #1 [English Captions]

I was a Yamaha servicer for over 30 years. The only problem I ever encountered with the Motif rack units was the circuit trace at the center terminal of the DC input jack always cracked. I would bridge the crack with a length of flexible stranded wire. The cause of the break is because the weight of the cable on the DC power supply hanging down breaks the thin copper circuit trace. It is important to wrap the cable around the plastic support strain relief.

My favorite synth demonstration of all time. And the background sounds and rhythms at the end are superb and the highlight of this wonderful demo. Those "thumbs down" or any criticism of this man showing the capabilities of this synth module are utterly illiterate to the concept that any musician who shows respectable skills in a whole variety of styles is in fact your finest musician. This is a well known fact among the musical geniuses that have blessed our ears through the centuries. But pride always gets in the way.

Pretty impressive unit. I know you can't possibly scratch the surface in 10 minutes with all the possibilities, but after hearing STAGEA, I became interested in Yamaha synths that use AWM synthesis. I could see adding this to my rack.

So to select sounds, the Motif Rack uses nested folders essentially, every synth should be designed this way IMO!

Great demo. My only complaint about this machine is that there aren't any 'voices' really - like choir type of voices - but maybe that's because on a $99 type machine they are really just samples. It would be cool to see the PC integration and adding additional sounds.

I only know the little Japanese I know from anime. In other words, I still don't know a thing he's saying. But I just love him (just to make sure, i'm straight), because he's just so pationate about his instruments in all of his videos. It's a joy to watch, plus he plays well. Him and Bert Smorenburg could sell me anything. XD

a midi capable keyboard is enough. But with a computer you can go deeper in the features of the rack. There are lots of things that you can not control from the front panel. Check out the owners manual on yamahasynth com /downloads/ manuals ... it's about 100 pages but well organized

You are right! Do they expect everyone to buy the full XF keyboards? Roland answered with the Integra expander out this year.

Ha ha, believe it or not, I got the Integra. I am not thrilled with a lot of the so called superNatural sounds on it, I'd say they're fairly gimmicky, but the full collectioin of the finely sampled SRX libraries on board makes Integra a definite keeper.

This video has been uploaded like 5 years ago, and still no Motif Rack "XF" on the horizon. That makes me a big upset, because I like Yamaha sound, but I already have a few keyboards, and I don't want to spend thousands on another. Module is what I want, and the Rack XF would be very attractive, with the flash memory expansion and all sounds available. This is really frustrating that Yamaha did not make the rack version of the XF.

I like Yamaha Motif series, especially the ES line with the expansion boards capability. The only thing I am not getting is he inclusion of those arpeggiators, which are in fact auto-accompaniments. Why would anybody need those? A professional synthesizer is to create original music, not using somebody else's, I think.

Excuse my ignorance (I'm just now getting started in digital pianos and all that), but how does this work exactly? If you have a digital piano or midi controller you can just plug this module into it and it adds all these voices? Do you have to hook it to a computer too or is that not required? I'm just wondering because I'll have a Yamaha P-155 digital piano soon and something like this would be awesome if I wanted more voices later on (out of my budget right now though).

I am wondering If you or anybody here can help me with the trouble Ive had recently with my Live set up ; Im trying to control a Motif ES Rack with my Older Evolution MK 449C Midi keyboard controller without a Computer , Ive gone thru the manuals and all that Ive searched for KZbin TuT Vids but I haven't been able to find any useful information ..Im trying to assign some of my favorite patches to the controller so I can switch between them back and forth when playing Live , I have the manuals , and I know a little but not so much about midi , How Do I do this , I know this is not the place to ask for help about this but My Other attempts elsewhere have been unsuccesful ... :(

Sounds like you are going to want to send bank and patch switch. Looks like you need to send control change 00, for MSB and 032 for LSB. There should be a data list showing what the MSB and LSB numbers will be for a given bank ( MSB just selects drum voice, or normal voice, and I assume LSB selects the voice bank.) Once you send the MSB and LSB using the control change events, I would presume you then send a standard program change message. I have never used your keyboard, so I don't know if it can be configured to send this sort of data. And I don't own an ES to test. But based on what I read, that seems to be the process

If that MSB and LSB stuff gets confusing, it's because MIDI is primitive due to coming out in the 1980s when computers were far more limited. Control change messages could contain a value from 0 to 127. So synths sometimes need control messages with a higher range of data, so use two separate messages, one for the Most Significant Byte and one of the Least Significant Byte. If you ever look at a MIDI implementation chart, you will see a range of control change numbers for MSB, followed by a range for the corresponding LSB. CC number 0 to 31 for MSB, and 32 to 63 for LSB. Even though I program computers for a living, I find it non intuitive, to say the least. So the bank change requires two control change messages, on the ES, one for the MSB, and one for the LSB. The program change is another MIDI message, and takes a normal MIDI value from 0 to 127 I believe

Yes. It's just like a regular Motif keyboard but in rack form and uses MIDI CC to change presets, fx, and modes.
