Programmer here: If/Else statements aren't inherently slower than switches, it's how he was using them that caused the slow down. Having all NPC's running their tasks per frame on a single script is just terrible, regardless of if/else or switches or what have you. It's not A-synchronized and forces every task to solve itself before proceeding to the next, causing lag. It's the kind of thing someone with zero programming skills would do after researching how to program, and never review their code or ask for help. I remember reading his code when it was first leaked and I sat down with some colleagues and literally re-wrote 13,000 lines into 12-15 lines, for fun because it was an interesting challenge to use our skills in this way. good times.

And the sequel's final version _landed after Joe Biden's inauguration._ *He started in 1992!* The sequel, which he worked on concurrently, *was called Millennium,* that should give a hint as to the original planned release date 😂) A literal full generation of human beings came and went before it was finished. Largely because of the same reasons as Yandere, insane feature creep, multiple useless alternate modes, and fighting with everyone, even people who wanted to help! So grab your favourite version of YanSim and burn it to DVD, _then you can prove to your grandkids you were there!!!_ 😆 It's a good thing Kickstarter/Patreon wasn't around for BC3000, imagine finishing after nearly all your original backers died! 😅

Honestly Yandere Sim could be a good game IF 1. Killing was not an option - the girls in the way of "senpai" are all relativly close to "senpai" and as such it does not make sense that you kill them all after the other without him mentally breaking down - one of them is his SISTER for gods sake 2. since killing is no longer an option it becomes a mind breaking game - figure out weaknesses - blackmaiol - threaten - pay a dude to beat them up - maybe in the case of a teacher make her get fired 3. in the meantime manage senpai find out ways for him NOT to hang out with the rivals by changeing time tables - arrange him getting bullied etc. the ending would then be based on how hidden from senpai and the methods of removel - lets say to get rid of the first rival (the childhood friend) you could find a way for the rivals father to go get a promotion and so she has to leave town which would be the S rank way of dealing with her

I remember following YandereDevs KZbin channel and watching his video about the "email problem" back in 2015. I was 19/20 years old back then. The premise of the game and ideas seemed interesting but when he dropped that video I already knew all hope that this game will be good was lost. If a developer has that less impulse control to just not check emails, then there is no way they are competent. Especially as a one man developer. Lo and behold, 10 years later and we have 6 billion examples of the guy having zero impulse control and terrible work ethic. His patreon went from 5k earnings to 1k. Doing every mistake you shouldn't do. Any aspiring developer should take note of the negative examples this guy represents. In its entirety, the game could work as a visual novel OR if the idea (as a 3D game) was to show-case how awful the yandere girl methods are. Instead it's a thinly veiled fetish game with anime stereotypes that glorifies this type of behavior. He wanted YandereSim to be a mixture of Hitman and Persona. Instead of understanding what makes these games fundamentally fun and great, he just looked at them on a superficial level and ripped features off to implement them into his game. It's terrible. On a different topic: man, Alex can be glad the two devs of the Yandere games were so linient. If I was the developer of either and he dropped that text, I would give him a "k" and block him.

damn, I've been trying to figure out how to make a game like that workable, and now I'm just longing for a visual novel that has 3d stealth/murder/torture gameplay segments. That could go hard, if written well
@vlecxius3 ай бұрын
@@Romanticoutlaw I was developing an idea for how a game like that could look 7 months ago. The concept I came up with was a 2D game. You had an overworld where you could choose different locations and then move around in them like in Persona 3/4. Depending on the people you talk to, new locations would be opened. For example if you talked to a student, they would tell you about a new mall opening. You can ask the student about it and they will tell you where it is, opening it on the overworld map for you to go to. This is to introduce the player to the "information" system that the entire game is revolving around. You are able to gather informations about the rival and from there choose how you wish to get rid of them. Just downright murdering them was the most difficult, with social engineering being the "easiest" but taking the longest. I'm sure there are more ways on how to approach this type of game but I'm a scrub in both coding and the best I can do is 2D pixel art lol.

One thing many people miss about the concept of a "Yandere" is that it's actually not really meant to be appealing. It's basically the japanese anime spin on slasher villains, but obviously done very differently. But because most of the time these characters are cute girls people like Alex started simping for these characters despite their obvious...mental illness, to put it lightly. The whole point of a yandere is to be cute and cheerful and yes, even sometimes sexy (they were designed to BE that way), but under the surface they basically are Freddy Krueger or Michael Myers. Just with the whole extra horror spin of an abusive relationship thrown in there. In short: Originally this type of character was not meant to be appealing. The internet is just to horny for thighhighs, I guess.

Someone pointed out that Yandev tried to get his section on the page removed twice with the excuse that he retired the account, when everyone else on that page is as relevant as the beanie baby craze in internet years. It was the first glimpse I got of his raging narcissism, and I figured if any indie dev would get into a scandal, his would be the least surprising, if he got that upset over his misdeeds on an earlier now dead account being documented.

@sugarpolecat47818 ай бұрын
I mean, in the beginning he was like "Im releasing a demo, because you need to show a protoype to game companies, so they can get idea what the game is" and he's kinda right. You either create a great design document, or you create a fantastic prototype. BUT, here is the thing...just a prototype, will give the companies an idea of what the game is about, but a design document will help you and the team that you might get, a clear goal what you are aiming at. I highly stress that you should always create a design document, even for litle projects. It will help you in the future, especially if you are a developer. Not only that, you should write comments in your code as much as possible and write reviews of your own code, which will help you in code reviews, because it will make you more confident. This guy, however, even without all that -- HE got approached by TinyBuild, an indie dev's dream in those days. AND he got the opportunity to have a skilled programmer work FOR him and fix his code and all that. And what does Alex do? "Don't touch my code >:(" like a petunlant, spoiled child, protecting his stupid toys, like they're some holy grail. Just accept the help, stupid, get the stupid game released, THEN add all your stupid, idiotic, unnecessary features like 1980s mode. This is why a design document is necessary, without it you don't usually have a clear goal, so you come up with "oh this would be cool" and you add all this pointless stupid shiz and never finish the core of the game. To be fair, you don't have to be the best programmer ever to make games. Plenty of Visual Novels are released and hailed as amazing, even though all you do is set AutoClicker to 1ms (lmao, joke). They don't require much programming, just good storytelling. PirateSoftware mentioned he looked into Undertale and it looks similar to YandereSim with the code. People keep poinitng out the ElseIf statements, but that has been inspected too and they weren't the actual problem. They decreased performance in a marignal way. The thing that Fs this whole thing up is that he is making ridiculous amounts of calls on each tick (or frame?) update. It's like a 10k long line of code on each update, that's one of the main reasons it keeps the game chugging like a steam locomotive. It's insane and I've never seen a game do that. This whole thing, is just a mess and I honestly can't belive people bought into it, because I played the demo when it was announced and all the creepy underskirt shots and all that gave me P**n game vibes and all that and the scope that he was aiming for was way too big for a single dude at that time to finish. Watashi is and will be superior even if it's not getting developed anymore.

I wonder what happened to Yandere dev to make him like this. Trauma caused by something that happened to him in the childhood would explain a lot.
@icravedeath.120011 ай бұрын
Yeah a lot of people don't want to acknowledge what impact trauma has on somebody's actions. It doesn't excuse them, but healing the trauma could prevent them from doing it in the future, which is nothing but a good thing.
@seacrystal618911 ай бұрын
He did mention being bullied in elementary school iirc, which was probably why he was homeschooled for the rest of his schooling. Honestly, spending the entirety of school years completely isolated from peers and spoiled to hell by parents would be enough to make anyone a manchild. But no matter the trauma, he had no excuse for what he did. He had SO many opportunities to get out of his rut and refused

As a Wannabe Gamedev myself my projects allways dies short, not because it was bad or anything, but mostly because i was doing i wasn't feeling good or it became too complicated to work, or some good ideas had conflicts with the game style which just became ideas and no game at all. Yandere simulator has a project error which is the time to complete it(there's too much stuff in this shitty game for a short period of time for the setting). 80~90% of the game that was made could just be deleted or reused on another project. Other problem is the creator himself, he always tries to fix exploits and being perfectionist for a game that the idea is so stupid.

@@Koronoir Funny. I recently purchased a Game Engine for cheap (think something like RPG maker but managed by a Japanese dev team). I am changing most of the assets, I am still using the general style of what was given. Although it's more applicable to fantasy stuff, my creative output combined with the present assets now also led me down a path about gunplay with magic. In the end it's what you make of it, though. I don't think you have to follow a certain aesthetic or style necessarily. If you wind up making a FPS RPG with 2D looks and magic, go for it.

scott cawthon made a horror game in 2014 because the characters in Tyke and Sons moved like animatronics and the following happened: - became the most iconic and well known franchises - made numerous more games to follow - most of which had a rich atmosphere with his own unique artstyle - the community making the lore convoluted to the point that it will never be solved - some amazing fangames - started the fanverse initiative to promote said fangames - is still relevent to this day - is about to become a decade old now meanwhile yanderedev: - has not even finished his game - bans people on the spot the majority of the time - sexually harassed minors - responds to mails 24/7

As someone who models assets for Morrowind mods... I still can't get over the 5000 polygon toothbrush. That thing was definitely intended for extreme close-ups in commercials. I never played his game, but I doubt YandereSim even has a 1st person mode to examine such tiny details up close. No sane dev would ever devout a fraction of polygons to such a tiny static mesh. I also saw the original artist who worked on that "Hate and Shame" video comment under another video that they warned YandereDev that such a video was beyond stupid and will explode in his face. YandereDev was really persistent and pushy on making it and was even planning a part 2 for it which is just bonkers-lol.

The only thing I'd like to point out in (unfortunately) YandereDev's defence is the misunderstanding of the "if" statements in his coding. dyc3 made a video analysing YandereDev's entire code, and he mentioned that, while yes, the "if" statements looks horrendous from a stylish perspective, but in terms of actual power consumption, they matter very little. Using dyc3 as an example again, he tested it with 10 million iterations where one was only using "if" statements, and the other using switch case statements, and he concluded that, yes it does make a noticeable difference at that point, but that's only after using it 10 million times. The major issues with the game's optimization comes from, and I quote dyc3: "It's a bunch of little things. There is no one big magic optimization bullet. 2 of the biggest things is draw calls for the students (or draw calls in general), and the legacy animation system. There's also the implementation of PromptScript, which requires a bunch of components to run Update(). Oh, and the fact that skinned mesh renderers can't be GPU instanced, etc. etc. The list goes on. Individually, these problems don't affect fps too much, but collectively, it kills the fps." Sources: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gp3Ie5WQaKuChrc Last statement: kzbin.info/door/cVClhnvO2PaYoiJstwphpgcommunity?lb=UgwqYKf598HtLsnKV314AaABCQ Otherwise that tiny thing (which doesn't really matter, but no need to make YandereDev look worse than what he already is; he's doing that well enough himself), it's a really great video, and I really enjoyed watching it. =)

I actually really appreciate this feedback, and I understand where you’re coming from.
