Year Old Long Toenails: Trimming Extremely Long Toenails
A 91-year-old patient was brought to the office by her son. Due to health issues and concerns about leaving her home due to the pandemic, she has not had any foot care in over a year. As a result, her toenails grew extremely long, causing discomfort, a change in shoe size and shoe styles, corns, calluses, and skin scales. The last time she had her nails treated (pedicure) was a year ago at a nail salon. This video illustrates the issue of foot care challenges in the elderly and how family members can intervene.

Wow! This is a doctor who truly cares about his patients as seen through his bedside manner. I love how he carefully asks probing questions in order to find out root cause of the patient's issues without making the patient feel ashamed. He gave this woman some much needed TLC for her feet.

I have to admit that when my mom became ill I never thought about her toenails.😞 Her older sister is still alive, blind and is 89.She has no children so I will definitely make sure to check her feet. Blessings Dr. I hope you sleep peacefully at night for all the good you do for your patients during the day.

After my Father died, I brought my Mom to GA to live with me. Her feet were in bad shape. She was with me for 6 wonderful years and her feet were soft and her nails were trimmed! I'm so glad I was able to take care of her. Not everyone has that situation. I worry about old folks not having anyone that looks after them.

I wish so badly other podiatrists would take note.... It's not hard, it doesn't take very long, and it helps your patients tremendously to go the extra mile. Not a single other podiatrist on youtube does what you do Dr. Jefferson.. And it's a shame. You are the best podiatrist of all. Period, hands down.

I have a brother who is in his 80s , having serious health problems along with diabetes, insists on doing his own med management and gets it all messed up. No one has examined his feet, doctor not interested. I want him to see a podiatrist but he refuses to do so. I'm on the east coast and he's on the west coast. He has a son but he is not helpful. Very frustrating.

Poor lady. The nail polish told the story of how long her nails were neglected. With the pandemic, my nails were neglected too. Hands and feet. Very long and completely uncharacteristic for me. Having the use of one arm doesn't help. After meeting my sister unexpectedly outside a store in August, she saw my fingernails and after laughing at my condition she asked about my feet. Same reaction. That day her and her daughter trimmed my nails outside her house on the patio. They were laughing so hard that tears rolled down their cheeks! At least the foot pain from walking around with long toenails is gone. I was too embarrassed to ask for help. I could've injured myself if I'd attempted to do it. I tried. Don't be afraid to ask for help.

Glad your sister and niece were able to help! And even if this woman's son weren't comfortable doing it himself, I bet a lot of sons would be willing to have a conversation like "I'm looking for a way to deal with this" and maybe help phone around to find the right professional.

I like that you get information about your clients' lives, like how they're feeling generally, if there's anyone at home with them, how mobile they are, if they're eating enough, etc. You treat the whole person. A friend of mine was unable to walk or sit up. Her toenails was about a inch and a half. I asked her why no one would cut them for her and she said “I am on blood thinners”. She then said “the nurses would every two months”. I couldn’t stand the nails that long. I asked her if I could cut them and she said “sure just be careful”. I took the cutters and only cut the free edge and straight across. She was happy and unharmed. I painted them hot pink for her. I never truly understood how important it is to check on families feet till now. Great video and you was very nice to this lady. Thank you for helping her.

What a lady ! 91 years old still going strong 😀. It’s always sad when seniors don’t get the care they deserve. When she said that she couldn’t wear proper shoes to her son’s funeral it made me feel sad. Mind you sometimes it’s not the family that is to blame if for example seniors have long nails or skin problems. Lots of elderly are too ashamed or just stubborn to ask their caregivers for help. Taking his mother to dr. Jefferson is the best her son could have done. Not only are her feet thoroughly taken care of, dr. Jefferson also sees to it that other illnesses or problems are addressed. Every time I see the beginning of the videos with the sights of Washington it makes me think back of the time I spend a part of my holiday in and around this beautiful city. Me and my young daughter came to the US to visit my husband who worked there. Because he couldn’t accompany us we had to do all of our trips alone. For a European who has never been to the US this was a bit scary. The people though were so friendly, amazing. We had a lot of fun and when all this virus misery is over I’ll sure come back. Keep safe people !

Weird question, if you don’t mind taking a minute to answer. I was a ballet dancer before my accident. I’m sure you can guess what my feet looked like. I finally had the fungal nails treated a few years after my accident, but which time they were raised with that crumbly stuff under them. Except, 3 of my nails did something I’ve never seen on any videos- in the middle of that yellow crumbly stuff was blood vessels and nerves. I trimmed my nails often and cleaned them very well, but those 3 always bled and hurt like hell to cut and scrape. My understanding is that the yellow stuff is just shed skin and nail bits that build up. So how could there be blood vessels and nerves in there? My nail clippings were cultured and confirmed to be standard fungal issues and a 3 month course of oral meds fixed them completely and they’ve been normal for 13 years now.

What a wonderful job you did for your patient! You go that extra mile, but you are so very nice about it. You give very important care information in such a soft conversational way. In my opinion you are the best!!!!!!!!!

What a great example of someone not wanting to ask for help. She admitted to purchasing new shoes in a bigger size to accommodate her toenails instead of getting them taken care of. So sad but thankfully her son was able to get her help.

Bless her 91! Her feet will feel good in her shoes now. I have got to try and find someone to do my brothers one foot . He lives in a small town far away. The other foot is amputated . Take care and be safe Dr Jefferson

I really respect the time you took to not only trim her nails, but address the dead skin. I have no doubt that she went home happy. 💕

It is SO comforting (and rare!) to see a doctor, a podiatrist, take an interest in the WHOLE patient. And Dr. J does it on a regular! Thanks so much for what you do! Many a Dr. could take a hard lesson from you. Just because you're a "foot" doctor, or any other kind of specialist, doesn't mean you ignore the rest of her body!

I get so happy when I see that you have uploaded another video. The world needs more people like you. I always have a big smile and a heart full of love and gratitude watching you interact with your patients. I must admit that I get a little teary eyed at times as I watch the videos. Your patients must feel fantastic when they leave your office.
