Just found this video after making an awfully bad mate. This helped me make a really smooth mate. Much appreciated for your time in sharing these tips!

Amazing! I have Uruguayan heritage (live in the States) and have drunk yerba on and off for years. I even own my grandfather's 75 year old mate! I have watched a billion YT videos on the best way to prepare yerba and best brands. I have always had a bitter mate and just assumed I needed to find the right brand or even add sugar. Then I came across your video. PERFECT EXPLANATION! I am enjoying my second mate of the day thanks to you. Take care, from Boston.

my kraus organic mate comes with a manual. my first mate was perfect. (my 2nd was not lol). a few things i've noticed: kraus recommends 80 degrees water temperature but also recommends an additional step: after the shaking they instruct you to fill the cup with 1/4 of _lukewarm_ water, wait for 2 minutes and then insert the bombilla. then add 3/4 of 80 degrees (**** fahrenheit) water and you're ready to go. my first mate was perfect, not bitter at all. my second one, which brought me here was super bitter. i suspect that the lukewarm water was too hot and that the 3/4 of water was 85+ degrees and that i did a bit of stirring. i hope this helps. kraus is a argentinian brand of mate so i guess they know their tea.

Great explanation! I got my bomba & gourd yesterday & tried properly brewed mata for the first time this morning. It was sweeter than I thought it would be! Hints of bitterness, especially if i don't refill the water soon enough & the mata has more time to steep. I did pour over the whole thing for this first time, but I know better now & will pour in the same spot from now on. Thanks!!

Thank you!! I just can't believe that you can find yerba mate clear to south africa WOW!!

In Argentina to mate we put orange peel or grapefruit. You can also put some coffee especially in the morning before going to work. For a good digestion we put cedron gives another taste and is very flavoring.

Hi there!! I truly admire your willing to teach people who don't know anything about Yerba mate!! Great video and excellent explanation of "how to" instruction. In the East and south eastern part of Bolivia is where Yerba mate is drank too.Have you tried "Cedron" I'm pretty sure you'll like it too. Greetings from a Bolivian living in Oklahoma USA.

Hola Silvia. I didn't know that mate common in Bolivia too. What is more common, the hot mate or cold tereré? Cedrón is good. I like it. In English its called Lemon Verbena and quite easy to find in South Africa too. Saludos from Cape Town

Awww! que dulce de ti en responder!! YES in Bolivia we drink yerba mate too - not in the andean Part. Its drank cold on hot days and hot on cold days. I didn't know that I can find Lemon verbena in the U.S. I'll look for it. Saludos nuevo amigo de Cape town :)

Take orange peals or lemon peals on top with sugar. Also instead of hot water you can use hot milk and a little bit of sugar.

Well, this video was excellent. I let the mate step for 3 min before drinking and boy was it bitter!! Yerba Mate works differently than tea. Just pour hot water and step to your preferred taste is the idea.

Great video! Thank you. Quick question. How long can a Mate sit between water refills? I would love to bring one to work and get into trying it out to replace my coffee habit.
@yerbasa15 жыл бұрын
Thank you. This is quite a common question. Generally we try refill the mate immediately. Leaving it to sit and get cold is very bad for the flavour, so I'd suggest you invite someone to have mate with you and just keep going until the flavour is out.

So I am attempting to find the caffeine content in Yerba. I consistently see "~80 milligrams of caffeine in each cup." but never any reference to the gourd. So i don't know if they are preparing as you show us to do or just using a tea bag. Anywho, do you know about how much caffeine per draw? I put about 4oz of 70 degree water in my little gourd and sip it down within 10 or 20 seconds. Is that really a whole 40mg of caffeine?
@yerbasa17 жыл бұрын
Thanks, good questions. The best answer I can give is from an official test that the Natural & Chemical Sciences department at the University of Misiones in Argentina did for me years ago. They steeped 50g of yerba mate (con palo) in 500ml of hot water (70 deg C) for 20 minutes. The amount of caffeine in the resulting solution was 37mg. They mentioned that 80% of the caffeine amount was already extracted within 5 minutes. These results are far lower than what you mentioned, however results would differ between brands, coarseness of the raw material, palo content, water temperature, dynamics such as stirring etc. I hope that helps
@nicholasfields30827 жыл бұрын
Excellent answer. Awesome that you got that test. Much appreciation!

Why is more adding more Yerba better for less bitterness? You never explained it in the video and I'm trying to figure out why I keep steeping it too bitter.
@danieldinev49053 жыл бұрын
I believe it's because less yerba soaks faster and makes it bitter, if you put more, the air in the yerba actually makes it float and it stays dry for longer

i just got into mate ! but when i first take a sip it tastes good but as i sip more the taste becomes different almost weird is that something i’m doing wrong ? or is that a part i have to get used to? thanks!
@yerbasa15 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question, but it's hard to diagnose the problem remotely...just make sure you don't leave the mate to steep though. Mate is something that should constantly be being refilled and drunk and passed around. That's why we pour less water rather than too much. Even adding just 50ml at a time is fine.
@chrisj23085 жыл бұрын
Yerba Mate South Africa great i’ll try adding less water thanks!

Thanks for the video! One question: I just watched a few videos about making Mate in Argentina: very similar to you way making it. The only difference is - they put a little bit of cold water before to fill the rest with hot water. Does it make sense to you? What do you think?
@yerbasa13 жыл бұрын
Hi. A little bit of cold water before the hot water is fine but if you're hot water temperature is right I don't see the need for it.
@ossaguena8 жыл бұрын
yeah, man, i'm drinking Mate right now!
@Daniel-xq6zh Жыл бұрын
I think that's backwards... the bitterness is merely the most powerful note of the yerba's complex flavor In time you start noticing other nuances such as sweet and smoked notes So I say don't flee from bitterness, allow it to be the first step of a deeper appreciation

You mentioned you can use Yerba multiple times. But how would one dry it for later use if you drink only 1-2 cups at a time? Is there a particular drying process? Thanks for the video! I have thyroid issues and a limited list of foods/drinks I should be eating/drinking. Coffee is one I shouldn't be drinking and have heard Yerba Mate is a good alternative with better health benefits. I'm glad I watched how to properly make prepare it. :)

mate's better with hot water... because you take all the best of the yerba.... if you make it cold you just get the taste... like terere in paraguay... Here in Argentina or Uruguay we drink it hot. Sorry for my english.. hahaha

Hey Yerba Mate Guy... I don't know where you got your knowledge about the Yeba Mate. South Africa?? Yerba Mate comes from South Amerika. Paraguay, Argentine, etc... I'ts true that the water doesn't have to boil, but you're putting in the "BOMBILLA" the wrong way. The Bombilla has to be leaned against the "slope". Isually in South America we use Horn as "Guampas" or "mate cups" as you call them. Get your information right and come visit South America. We'll drink some real mate with you. Do you know what "Terere" is? It's the same principal as mate, just with very very cold water for very very hot days!! So if it's cold you drink mate and if it's hot you drink terere!!
@yerbasa18 жыл бұрын
Hi Jonas. You must be Paraguayan. A lovely country. I visited there in 2014. I learned to drink mate in Argentina, Tereré in Paraguay and chimarrão in Brazil. What is the reason for the bomba having to lean on the slope? It works just fine doing it the way I did in the video. Thanks for the invitation to have tereré in South America one day. I hope to take you up on it.
