One of their best vocal arrangements, on any album. I love how they use the vocals as instruments, they kind of take the place of keyboards, in a way. I think this is one of the best songs on which both Trevor Rabin and Jon Anderson shared lead vocals.
@wreckingKREW14 жыл бұрын
The instrumental that leads into "Leave It" is called "Cinema". When Yes broke up after their 1980 album Drama and the subsequent tour,bassist Chris Squire and drummer Alan White were going to start a new band with guitar player Trevor Rabin and somewhere along the way original Yes keyboardist Tony Kaye joined in. This quartet recorded "Cinema".They were going to call the new band Cinema as well. Later on,when vocalist Jon Anderson came back in the mix,they decided to stick with being Yes. This instrumental also won the band the only Grammy of their careers.

Yes in the 80s with records like 90125 was more pop-oriented. While still quite progressive, they were making more radio-friendly shorter hits. This was a big departure from the earlier heavy prog days of the Yes Album and Close to the Edge and Fragile. While all those records are epic, you can't get airplay with a 20 minute song. The arrival of Trevor Rabin in the 80s improved their commercial possibilities while still producing great music.
@trendydelquendy3 жыл бұрын
Trevor Horn's high-produced drums, played by Yes' Alan White here, were sampled by his studio and used again in his art-synth outfit The Art Of Noise , which were a big influence in the electro/breakdance early 80s. Apparently Chris Squire;s "Dommm" bass note vocals were also used.

As a big (old) YES fan, I of course really enjoyed your comment. I'm excited to see what you will say when you meet the good old "YES classics". My favorites are "Awaken", "The Gates Of Delirium" and "Close To The Edge" (I find the latter best on the YESSONGS live album. There is also a usable revised video on "Jon Anderson Official" (1972)) . Attention! These songs are all very long. (that's what I love)
@gradypatterson19484 жыл бұрын
Note that the song "Leave It" doesn't start until the a capella vocals begin: everything before that is a separate song called "Cinema". You stated that Jazz is a big part of your musical experience - one incarnation of Yes included Swiss jazz keyboardist Patrick Moraz. I suspect that you will be stunned by that lineup's one album, and particularly the centerpiece song. The album is called "Relayer", and the song is the epic-length (22 minutes!) "The Gates of Delirium". The song tells both in instrumentation and in lyrics, the story of Leo Tolstoy's "War and Peace" - in turn based on the historical French invasion of Russia! I strongly recommend the Steven Wilson remix of 2014 - the instrumental density gets peeled back, with each instrument gaining a clarity that was not possible in the mid-1970s! kzbin.info/www/bejne/qYDdZqpugcdko5Y

The notification for this came up while I was driving. Hurried home to put it on the big speakers. I knew you were going to love the drums! The popular hit from this album was “Owner of a Lonely Heart” and it’s a heartbreakingly good song. I blasted this whole album driving to school.

As a classic yes fan, I'm not "supposed" to like this album, but it's in my top 5 Yes albums. Maybe because I grew up in the 80s. More likely because it's a great fucking album. Even "Owner of a Lonely Heart" is a great pop song. The rest of the songs, though not as epically long as the 70s stuff, are inventive and musical and not pop at all.
@Widdermaker3 жыл бұрын
I’m glad you liked it! I love this song - it’s one of the most unique and cool songs of the ‘80’s. Highly complex, yet still “hummable.” When people first hear it, they can’t believe their ears. “Owner of a Lonely Heart” was the biggest hit from this album. Yes is like Boston: playing on a different level. And pushing the envelope. You might also like The Alan Parsons Project, another progressive rock band that pushed the limits. “Stereotomy,” “Money Talks,” “Beaujolais,” “Standing On Higher Ground,” “Games People Play,” and “La Sangrada Familia,” are good choices. Led Zeppelin’s “All Of My Love” (thunderous bass drums) and “Fool In The Rain” are sometimes overlooked classics. “Who Are You” by The Who is epic. “Only Solutions” by Journey (more thunderous bass drums!). “Let’s Go,” “My Best Friend’s Girl” (a throwback to the 50’s), and “Drive” by The Cars.” “Urgent” by Foreigner has one of the best saxophone riffs in Rock-n-Roll. “Chained Lightning” by 38 Special. Man, I could go on! Those were the days. ELO, Supertramp, Queen, The Police, The Eagles, Steely Dan, The Steve Miller Band, Toto....jeezus we had a wealth of diversity and richness in rock music back in those days! You have a lot to look forward to!

All Yes is good Yes, but "Wondrous Stories" is my favourite--and i'm nearly frantic listening to tunes like Roundabout and Long Distance Runaround, so feeling more strongly about this track should be impossible. But Wondrous Stories is almost medieval/renaissance in its polyphonic structure and tonalities. The lyrics feel like something Led Zeppelin might've drafted--sort of celtic/folk musical and symbolic references I guess? Rhythmically, i think its beautiful and subtle internal shifts will dawn in a smile across your face. It's not a 'popular' track, relatively speaking, but it's like an ethereal, timeless fairy tale, told over Yes's accompanimental and compositional virtuosic brilliance. It's lovely and peaceful yet striking and powerful. You know... "Yes." :)

Hi Chod. First day on your channel. I'm Illume; nice to meet you. So far, I've only viewed your Yes reactions, as they are among my top groups. I would love to see playlists by artists on your channel, to make finding your reactions by groups easier to find, but if you have only done fewer than 10 Yes reactions, I'm guessing search pulled all of them up. Anyway, I saw your first reaction to Yes, with Owner of a Lonely Heart. As you are learning via your commenters, while a huge hit for Yes, that is not typically of them. However, if you have not already done so, now that you are jumping back and forth between prog and pop Yes, may I suggest you give an audio only version on Owner of a Lonely Heart a relisten? While still not among my favorites, you may come to appreciate the musicianship in that song a little more.

There were times when everything that had the name of Trevor Horn connected to it would draw my attention. It started off in the last months of the 1970s, when The Buggles released 'Video Killed The Radio Star'. When Horn moved away from recording his own material to becoming a producer it got even more interesting. ABC (the 'Lexicon of Love' album is still one of the absolute gems of the early 80s), Propaganda, Art of Noise, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Grace Jones and ofcourse Yes. With the 90125 album Yes hit the big times, mostly because of the monster hit 'Owner Of A Lonely Heart'. Personally I think it's one of the lesser Yes albums.

I love this song! And this album! I've been a fan of Yes since 1974. Is 90125 as great as The Yes Album, Fragile or Close to the Edge? No, however, it's a fantastic 80s album. To me, every song is good or great. I saw Yes on this tour in 1984 and they played the whole album except for "Our Song," which is still a good song. To me, again, in MY opinion, the best song on the record is "Changes." Yes is my second favorite group, surpassed only by Rush.

So, new subscriber here. I am enjoying your journey a lot. I work from home and have been playing your reactions while I work. You mention your background in Jazz music so I was wondering if that extended to the 1970s Jazz/Rock Fusion genre? In any case enjoy all the new music you are getting suggestions for.
