I'm also the producer for the Winding Road KZbin Channel:

Here on TheTopher, I'm known for putting a camera on my face and driving cars. Whether it's about any of my personal cars or reviews on weekly test vehicles, the goal is to give you an idea of what a certain car is like to drive or live with. Most of my videos are filmed in POV, with my clothes on, and (for like the 5th time) with in-ear binaural audio. Which, if I haven't made it clear yet, is why you should wear headphones. Because of the whole "woah" factor. It's there, trust me. Try it, you'll see! Or don't. As long as you whitelist me on your adblocker I'm okay with whatever you do or don't do with regards to headphone usage. That is all. Oh and I guess you should also probably subscribe. Why are you still reading this, you should be watching the video. With headphones! Hah, had to sneak that in there one more time. Later!

You are by far my favorite KZbin car channel. Period. You tell it like a true DRIVING enthusiast without regurgitating all the auto-journalist bullshit and THAT’s completely unique. When I’m researching a car, you’re my first stop on the internet to get an inkling of the driving enthusiast characteristics and potential. You speak the language (car-guy) properly, fluently and with clarity; and you are clearly in love with driving, just for the sake of it, just like me. Thanks young man. 😉👍

I had Blizzak WS70's on my BRZ for three winters. I drove in every snowstorm and never got stuck. I have an STI now with Wintercontact SI's and they are great tires. They handle much better on dry pavement than the Blizzak tires did. I'm surprised the Continentals aren't more popular I think they are the best all-round winter tire.

Fun Wheel Drive! Hell Yeah! I have Michelin X ICE on my Toyobaru but any quality name brand will do. Studded Generals artics are quite popular among canadian brz bloggers. They seem to have a lot of bang for the buck. Michelins x ice are exellent on cold dry pavement and on wet roads, very good on light snow and slush, but are just OK on ice. Studs are needed on the nastiest stuff and ice. However you do sacrifice a lot of that "every day" dry/wet handling with studs.

Really looking at getting a new 2018 BRZ in the spring, and my only concern has been driving it in the winter (I'm in northwest PA). Been watching as many videos as I can, and it definitely looks doable with the right tires. My only real concern is how the car would handle snow covered hills as I live in an area with lots of them, and I've only found a few videos that talk about that aspect.

BMW life 203 I've been planning different routes I can take if need be, but there's still one or two sections where I don't have a choice. Currently have a 2015 Forester XT with Blizacks and haven't had any issues, but going to rwd does give me some concern.

I would find a way to test drive both an AWD and RWD system the same day in wintry conditions and hopefully in an area where you can actually slide the thing and feel where you lose grip on roads that simulate what you typically drive on. Otherwise you'll never know and without driving to the limit be able to see if it makes a lick of difference for where you live. For instance I used to live on a mountain that strongly urged (required) the use of chains and I found out why they require them when I slid backwards 80 feet into a guardrail in a RAM 1500 on an 16% grade. Had all seasons on. Pretty sure I'd either have needed chains or studded ice tires that night. So even in 4WD-lo I was toast.

Kyle Drexler Unfortunately that's not possible. The only dealer around me doesn't have any BRZs (since they don't sell in this area), so I'll be factory ordering one. Pretty much any car is competent in the winter with dedicated snow tires. Heck I've been through many winters with in Buffalo with real wheel drive muscle cars and regular all season tires. Just drove home in snow tonight in my 2012 Mustang 5.0 with BFG G-Force Comp2 AS tires. 255's in the front and 285's in the back. Not ideal but doable. Just have to take it easy, be smooth, and use common sense. With narrow dedicated snow tires it would be EZPZ.

So I shouldn’t ride in the winter on stock 215/45/17 Winter Tires?
@TheTopher
@TheTopher 3 жыл бұрын
You’ll probably be fine, but id highly recommend going with a taller and narrower tire than stock. Something like a 205/55/17 would be good, or even better a taller 16” tire/wheel

Rear wheel drive is WAAAAAAAAAY better in snow, than front wheel drive.. You always tend to over steer with FWD, and with RWD you can enter, what I call a "Controlled Drift". Making cornering a bit better in snow, as you demonstrated in the video.
@gwot
@gwot 6 жыл бұрын
I think you mean understeer. oversteer is drifting. for the general public FWD is better, if you're either over OR under steering, you're going too fast. If you need to do a "controlled drift" because you're understeering, you're going too fast. FWD can pull the car through limited traction, RWD will need more skill to modulate to keep the rear in check.

Yeah right Under steer.. I keep confusing those two.

As Walter Röhrl once said: "Oversteer is when the passenger is scared. Understeer is when *I* am scared." Regarding what is better for the average person... I tend to disagree with gwot. Yes, FWD will get the average person moving much easier than RWD in the snow. But understeer is much harder to control than oversteer. Understeer in an FWD car, you open the steering and reduce throttle. But when you are going too fast and you don't open the steering enough and are to hectic getting the right foot of, the car will snap into oversteer. And now the average driver will have a problem. The more the suspension is set up to "safely understeer", and the more the weight distribution is front-heavy, the more abrupt this transition will be. Take old (80s and 90s) Audis, for example. They always understeer and plough straight ahead. Until they suddenly don't. And when they bite you, they are so fast and violent, that even an experienced driver with lots of track time will have a hard time controlling that. So our inexperienced, scared driver has always experienced understeer, ad now suddenly finds the back end in front of him. No chance to catch this, if this is your first time. Luckily, there are properly set-up FWD cars too. Take old SAAB 900 (pre-GM), take Ford Focus (all generations) for example. These have a quite lively rear end - this might feel unstable to your grandma, but these cars are much easier to control, as they communicate clearly what they are up to, and the transition between oversteer and understeer is more of an area in which you can move and dance, and not an on/off switch. Unfortunately, that requires some understanding of driving physics, a little bit of feel for the car and some practice - all of which the average driver lacks. In a RWD car on the other hand, controlling oversteer is simple and intuitive. Steer in the other direction and back of the throttle. No bad surpises here. You need a bit of practice here, but as that is fun and more importantly, can be done at relatively slow and less frightening (and less dangerous) speeds, an RWD driver is more likely to have done his homework. But where does the notion of oversteer being safer come from? Easy. That is because manufacturers typically assume that the average driver cannot drive and is going to freeze at the first sign of trouble instead of reacting properly. Pushing over the front tyres when understeering, the car loses speed, and if you have enough room left, the car will eventually come to a speed where the tyres can steer again. So, given enough room, understeer in an FWD car will correct itself, if you do nothing. And if you do not have enough room left, it is A LOT better to crash straight on into an obstacle, where your crumple zone can absorb the impact, than to spin into the obstacle sideways, leaving you with next to no crumple zone. 65km/h head on into a tree, and you'll probably be fine - especially as wou won't be going 65 at the time of impact anymore, but rather 50, as the car pushing over it's front tyres will lose speed rapidly. 65km/h sideways into a tree and you are dead. The trouble starts when in spite of manufacturer expectations, you somehow DO react, though... than the understeering car requires much more skill.

Does anyone know if 16in wheels fit a BRZ with the performance pack?
@TheTopher
@TheTopher 6 жыл бұрын
c bam I'm thinking 16's are out of the question for the performance pack brakes. There are a few threads on ft86 that outline what fits, with some 17's having issues with their spoke design or without spacers . Still, not a huge deal. You could get by just fine in the winter on 17s and 215 or 205 snows.
