Truth be told. I started driving commercial in 1992. I'm still doing it and I'm giving it 5 more years and I'm out. I can't take it anymore. Safety has become secondary and so many other reasons. You're absolutely right Mark.

If the freight volume is so bad why do they even need new drivers? It's all about keeping the pay rates down.

@@ron-o4d The question remains though. Why the need for new inexperienced drivers if there are too many truck for the available freight?

Because everybody that hires new drivers have dropped their pay rates and people are figuring out it's not worth it to be away from home working all the hours for that kind of money, when the market is bad like it is now the only people that are happy as a new company driver are people that actually like driving and it doesn't bother them to work long hours for Low pay, once you get two to three years of experience better things open up, but most people don't last that long especially now, and all the mega carriers that hire new drivers have contracted freight, they always have work, but they will pay as little as they have to for a driver, and right now there's a whole bunch of people that are willing to work for peanuts and they're always will be

Look at the turnover rate at some of these mega carriers? Some of these companies have 100% turnover. Every single person they train and hire quits or get fired?

17 year driver here. This is what I think. These big company's are desperate on 2 levels. One, not wanting to pay in accordance to current inflation. Two, be in bed with the training schools so anyone can get passed and as fast as possible.

An important point that needs to be addressed. Thanks to this decision all drivers regardless whether they are company or owner operators share financial liability for accidents where prior to this company drivers were not liable financially. I’m thinking of getting a cdl but feel I need about 1.2 million in liability coverage to protect my assets if I should get in a serious accident. Which I cannot afford. So I’m considering not getting the cdl. This will kill the trucking industry as a whole when company drivers need to carry supplemental liability coverage.

If you really want to fix the problems the way Mark says; Do away with Companies that are SELF INSURED, All Companies must have FMCSA approved and accepted credited INSURANCE , NO SELF INSURANCE, NO EXCEPTIONS. Now all trucking companies have no choice but to hire Experienced Professional Drivers, AND KEEP THEM HAPPY….😇 , Wow, just imagine the negotiations in Orientation now 😂, MAN that would drive the SHIPPERS AND RECEIVERS and BROKERS nutts!!!

I heard from the past they were a good company if you are an experienced tanker driver and don’t ever need to go home. My last contact with them was 2010… I’d use extreme caution dealing with tanker companies if you don’t have any experience. Most of those trainers will give you a hard time because they think you’re going to replace them for lower pay. FYI , most drivers just Quit, because of the faulty training.

How in the sam hell did he even get a job with Schneider to begin with? How did he pass his drug test from day one? Schneider obviously went the cheap route in their hiring process with that guy. Had they done a hair test in the beginning they would have known he had a past history of using drugs. Mark, I totally agree with your assessment. The fine should be much higher. They deserve it.

If they actually make it challenging and tedious for people to become truck drivers, they'd have to pay truckers more money= higher shipping rates that will directly affect the largest businesses in the country "the true owners of the country" so its doubtful that will happen.

Here in Michigan the kids have to go through a graduated license, multiple classes, and pay like $500 for it. Yet, you can become a truck driver in just a couple weeks for free if you play the system right. Has anyone looked at the safer scores of these big companies? They have been involved in dozens of fatalities and are still considered acceptable. Being a single truck company, if I was involved in a fatality I would be shutdown almost immediately. Thank God for lobbyists. Just saying
