In this 60 minute yin yoga class for hips and shoulders we are going to pull and pressurize the deep tissue of the myofascial sling to relieve shoulder pain. Your shoulders are connected to your hips and hamstrings through myofascial lines. When we honour the way fascial trains move through your body we can have more success at relieving shoulder tension and pain. Drawing on Tom Myers theory of anatomy trains we will explore the myofascial sling that connects your shoulders to your mid back and hamstrings in this yin yoga full class.
When we practice yin yoga we are getting into the deeper connective tissue of the body that surrounds the muscles. This needs to be treated differently than muscles which respond well to rhythmic repetitive action. Therefore in a yin yoga class you will find long holds, where you relax the muscles, come into stillness so that the slow gentle traction can affect the deeper denser tissue that wraps around the muscles, joints and bones.

Dearest Melissa, I did finish the class and listened intently to your poem. I so appreciate you sharing your spiritual journey with us on KZbin. I have to laugh each time I want to follow your direction to lie flat on my back for the rebound. I will be 80 in two months, and although I have practiced yoga for almost 40 years, I find that getting up, laying down, rollling over, etc:, is beginning to make me feel like a beached whale....however, I keep doing it because....yoga is a life style for me. I can't tell you how much I love to hear your voice, listen to your words of wisdom, and always at the end of class a beautiful poem. I hope you keep in your heart the appreciation I am sure we all feel, for being allowed the privilege of doing yoga with you. Namaste'

This class was amazing! I've been feeling a lot of tension in my body lately - mainly in my shoulders and hips, but also in my lower back and abdomen... After this class my body felt so much better and relieved! I even slept better during the night. It's incredible what Yin Yoga and holding the postures for long enough can achieve! I loved this class - I have been having a tight left shoulder and a week of query and mediation led me to intuit it was energy that needed releasing in my hips. The class today was spot on and I especially loved your poem. Tectonic plates imagery has been coming up a lot for me this year and in particular this last month so the poem resonated at every level of my being. I am experiencing held trauma in my shoulder so I didn't notice much difference...however, I know the differences can be very subtle and doing gentle yoga is always beneficial for me. So thanks so. much Melissa, because I am sure my myofascial sling is happier. namaste'

Would it be alright to substitute the figure 4 stretch with the pigeon stretch. I find I get a fuller stretch, and I can relax into it, or is the figure 4 stretch more beneficial in some way? For me, trying to hold onto larger thighs for a longer period of time is problematic for breathing, and for relaxation. I'm not opposed to toughing it out if the pose is more beneficial.
