This is the furthest thing from a moon salutation on the internet. It is a variation of the sun salutation, surya namaskar. Why this comes up at the top of a search for moon salutations is rather mindboggling, lol.

Well not really. This is Chandranamaskar designed by Bihar school of yoga in the early 1960s. The Chandranamaskar that you are referring to was designed by the kripalu centre in the late 60s. Both schools call their practice Chandranamaskar. So technically both are correct. But yes, the kripalu foundation Chandranamaskar with its 16 steps has been created to complement Suryanamaskar.

This is indeed a moon salutation! You can find it cited in the book The Complete Book of Ayurvedic Home Remedies by Dr. Vasant Lad

Thank you so much for posting this, Yoga International team! I am following Dr. Lad's Ayurvedic Home Remedy protocol and his moon salutation matches this one. It is so so helpful to have a video version to understand the details of the sequence 🙏

This is an excellent softer alternative namaskara for that could be used as a warm-up in gentler, more looner-energy, yin-ish practice late in the evening. Love this! Will incorporate into my own practice and teaching.

This is the sun salutation - the Surya Namaskar, the moon salutation is totally different. Thx

Ah, okay...(?) 🤔 Nevermind what the title says or how this flow is distinctly shown - why don't you go correct the instructor in the video rather then me? Thx.

In truth, there are a few different variations of what practitioners can describe as the "Moon Salutations". This particular flow is actually pretty similar to Chandra Namaskar as taught by Swami Satyananda Saraswati in his seminal yogic textbook Asana Pranayama Mudra Bandha (1969 Yoga Publications Trust). Go see for yourself.

It is the one version recommended by Dr Vasant Lad, who brought Ayurveda in the West, opened schools to teach traditional Ayurveda and yoga

Knee extending over your ankle will result in knee injuries when you are in chandra namaskar
@borntobefree9374 жыл бұрын
In a knee joint that is moving straight forward and backward, we are weight-bearing through the center of the knee joint and through the center of the ankle joint below it. In this case we can flex and extend the knee through whatever the range of motion is that the flexibility and strength of our muscles allow. So yes, provided that you have the strength and flexibility to do so, and that it does not cause pain for some other reason, bringing the knee in front of the ankle in poses such as side angle, warrior 2, or utkatasana will be fine for most people. It’s normal movement. Notice that your knee goes in front of your ankle every time you walk up a flight of stairs or go for a hike uphill.

@@priyrasta26 I was taught that if the level of the hips is below the knee then the weight is taken off ie in a low lunge so no danger for the knee joint. standing is different; the knee/ankle bear the weight of the hips/upper body 🤓

@@louisehallam8340 i would check this with a health care practitioner - i have -which is why i am recommending NOT to do this... everyone who teaches yoga IS NOT a doctor and its sad as i have been practicing for over 3 decades and very carefully - the only time i got injured was because a yoga instructor touched me! yoga injuries are accumulative - and are not like stubbing your toe...but if you think you are safe doing this - go for it and best of luck... but please remember - a yoga teacher is NOT a doctor - which is why disclaimers exist ...
