Especially when there's no competition. How on earth would one change water provider as an example? Here in Denmark we can change electricity provider, but it's so comical, like sure, some place 200 km from here, two islands away, is producing the power I'm using rn, riiight..

Nationalise the trains along with everything else. Got to return to the post war consensus. Thatcher screwed this country over.
@CaptainMainwaring-zv5iz
@CaptainMainwaring-zv5iz 8 ай бұрын
That won't help. The number of rail passengers has doubled over the last 20 years. If you think nationalisation will solve anything, just take a look at the NHS. The problem is mass immigration.
@DubhghlasMacDubhghlas
@DubhghlasMacDubhghlas 8 ай бұрын
@@CaptainMainwaring-zv5iz NHS issue is funding which Tories are responsible for under funding the NHS. And that is typically a conservative tactic under fund some government program say it does work to be able to build a case to privatize it. Which is what the Tories did with the rail system. Then they also give you scapegoat to blame all your problems on which is often people who don't look like you aka immigrants.

It's vital for investors, who make increasing profits a part of c-suite exec bonus packages, who push for short-term good at the risk of longterm harm. They don't care if a business goes belly up in a decade if their plan is to cash out or get a golden parachute in five years.

Rail in the UK has been an absolute mess since the privatization wave. Sure it has since been partially nationalized but the patchwork mess of different services in the UK makes no sense. Private rail can work if heavily regulated like in Japan of course. But what you always see in good rail networks is strong local monopolies whether they are public or private. the solution here is certainly not to spend less on it. Thats also part of the issue in fact. The UK has seen a lot more people using rail in the past 2 decades without any significant increase in service. Obviously the HSR projects exist but we all know how that is going. As for the whole cheaper for more. This is hardly the first time. Happens everytime when an industry runs out of things to improve in the immediate term. You often see a contraction of that industry afterwards as a sort of reset. Not to say this will work forever but it is not completely new. Though Pyrion is right in that things are changing over time. Certainly in terms of capital accumulation. And for the endless profit. Well what investors care about is the stock price increasing and nothing else for most. And the only way for is growth. As long as they can sell for a profit it doesn't really matter to them if things fall apart eventually.

I might be wrong, but a company's promise of increasing profits is what motivates investors to give them money to start in the first place.

If a train driver (a person who sits on a seat and occasionally moves a lever backwards and forwards) earns more than a specialist doctor or high court judge - then train journeys will cost silly money. Ban unions and employ normal sensible staff - costs will drop. It's so simple. I drive or walk everywhere.

In response to Flax believing that businesses have not always been as cheap/exploitative as they are nowadays: In some ways I think he is right. If you consider how things were produced in the past, making just about anything was an ordeal. Before fully automated production, regardless of what you wanted to purchase there was going to be a substantial labor cost factored into the price, as well as a craftsman/ worker whom had devoted a substantial amount of time and their reputation into the items production. In the past because everything required substantial labor to produce, just about everything was large purchase, people only owned a few sets of cloths, so those cloths needed to last, if they didn't, well then the tailor was going to get stabbed by one of their scammed customers. That said, since the birth of modern capitalism and the industrial revolution businesses have always been exploitative. Think about child workers, homeless/prison work camps, slavery, exploitative colonial trade (east India company), modern production outsourcing. Sometimes the people getting screwed aren't the consumers, and until recently the lower classes haven't really had any consumer buying power to exploit. Nowadays it's easier to obfuscate dodgy products, planned obsolescence in tech, synthetic materials that look put together, but break down quickly, corporations without faces or members of your local community to hold accountable, politicians like Nixon and thatcher that make dodgy business practices far easier than they already were. Its all just easier these days.
