Yorgos Lanthimos: How to Create Disturbing Dystopias

If you're a fan of dystopias in film, then you've got to love Yorgos Lanthimos. He's one of the best writer-directors working in the industry today and a master of building strange parallel worlds that aren't too far from being our own.
But how can he distort reality to the point where it doesn't feel too unfamiliar and what does he do from a visual standpoint to support this? This is my analysis on explaining how this great director works and why it makes him a genius of dystopian filmmaking.

not really, both have a totally different style and stories. Yorgos is a master in his own right, there's no need to compare him to Kubrick. Kubrick is way grander when it comes to his films.

Edward M I think Lanthimos is a genius. And I don’t think he’s a new up and coming director. The Lobster got a lot of awards even an Oscar nomination for best Screenplay, Dogtooth got another nomination, and he has more films like Alps, The Killing of a sacred deer. Maybe in the future his work will be more recognized, but that’s usual with geniuses

One of the brightest analyses I’ve seen. Dystopian worlds so close to our own & deconstructing of our dysfunctional society but indirectly & with ambiguities that involve the viewer intimately to the point of discomfort. Polarizing if you look at public reaction in an age of escapism and the popularity of childish formulaic sequels. Ok so I’m a film snob. Comparisons to the work of Bong Joon Ho interest me and even take me back to early Warhol
