Groucho Marx - You Bet Your Life

10 жыл бұрын

Well, the clear highlight of this show (as always when this happens) is Groucho doing a bit of spontaneous dance, this time Flamenco-style, (starting at 17:40). But Elizabeth Howell from couple #1 is also a highlight, a fascinating, strong, accomplished woman who has some very interesting things to say. Not to mention smoking one of Groucho's cigars.
COUPLE #1: Elizabeth Howell, originally from Wales, who speaks 18 languages / Tony Felice, masseur from the Ambassador Hotel, who also came from somewhere other than the U.S. (I'm not even going to try to figure out what he said). He only speaks 9 languages.
COUPLE #2: (returning from last week) Santa Heredia, Flamenco dancer who does a number / Charles Callaci, who says absolutely nothing until the quiz

They certainly don't make them like that anymore. Most of them today could not even tell you the name of the river where Cincinnati is located!

vova47 - She did the con on you too, I see. She lied to Groucho. She did not say, "I love the smell of that cigar". [That would be, "Saya suka bau cerut itu"] She actually said, ["apa khabar terima kasih"] - "how are you, thank you", common phrases tourists learn, to politely greet locals. [She said something in the beginning, but it was pronounced so badly, I cannot locate it, as there are too many possibilities]

R J - Genius is hardly the correct word. Con would be a better descriptor. She spoke basic words a tourist would learn to meet a local. "apa khabar - how are you & terima kasih" thank you. More words in the beginning, but her pronunciation is way off...imagine that. Also: Nowhere in the history of the Royal Navy, was there a Rear-Admiral Howell - You don't have to believe me, search this : Royal Navy (RN) Officers 1939-1945 www.unithistories.com/officers/RN_officersH6.html The 1st minute in, and I felt uneasy with her presence. Funny, yes...but in a strange, BS sort of way. She probably conned her way through America, playing on the generosity of wealthy Americans who loved someone from another country, whom they believed was connected to top brass. No doubt she was well read, however she had a totally fabricated history, and Americans bought it all, hook, line, and sinker. Absolutely, a female con! Believable, if not for history books. Also, she made no eye contact when relating a story, that should have come from the heart...instead, came from the head. Eye contact, or lack of, is telling.

@@rj6683 You popped in as I was shutting down, so I'll end my night with you. I'm nearly through my 7th decade, and have seen a lot of things in life, that most people today have not...only because most take for granted, and don't look for the clues. While I'm not professing a Sherlock Holmes level, I do pay attention to little things. The eyes always give a bad crook away. People lying will never look you in the eyes. That's the acid test for me, the eyes are the doorway to the soul, or if you will...the spirit. From years of looking for certain things, I can pick out certain types of people, and be correct 99.9% of the time, as there is always one, who will fool everyone.

I'll share 2 things with you, as you seem to be a real person, and not an ass-of-jack. First You can fool some of the people all of the time, You can fool all of the people, some of the time, but, you can't fool all of the people, all of the time. Second A wise person, learns from their mistakes. A wiser person, learns from someone else's mistakes. Don't be afraid to speak second. Test the waters before jumping in. I'm starting to remind myself of Columbo. One more thing...lol If we took an inventory of ourselves, and then checked out some of the things we take for granted, daily, and without question, we can surprise ourselves at how many "mistaken beliefs" we have in our memory, and well installed in our memory. One example, and I'll have to stop. That's the worst thing about meeting someone for one day, and then never talking to them again...everything has to be said in one sitting. Mistaken beliefs: One that I noticed in my life, that mess me up for years, and one I took for granted, without thinking. When I was 10-11-12 years old, my parents would work on a problem I was having, while I slept, saying don't worry about it, it will be ok in the morning, and fix it by the time I arose. Well, never falling back on the reasons why every problem was ironed out, life went on. Later in life, when I was living on my own, when a major problem occurred, I would sleep on it, thinking it would be gone in the morning. Being that this was adult life now, nobody was fixing anything while I slept, and it was a horrendous awakening, when I went through the next day, and the problems got much worst, and worst again later, that I had to reach out to my parents to help again, which they did, but I learned something from it. I had never had life properly explained, and like me, they forgot certain things, as they were far between. Still the seed was planted, and the child's mind finished the story...incorrectly.

I think it's nice that Groucho got to work in plugs for all three of the three things he was proudest of in 1960 -- "Groucho and Me," "The Mikado," and Melinda. One has to wonder how well those two polyglots spoke each of their many languages. Unfortunately I'm no judge of Malay! But either way Elizabeth Howell is a hugely interesting and entertaining character. Tony Felice says he comes from Dalmatia, which is in Croatia. But interestingly, he doesn't list Croatian (or Serbo-Croat, as it would have been more common to say in 1960) among his nine languages. He seems like he's part of the native-Italian-speaking minority based on his accent and the fact that he chooses to speak to the other contestant in Italian.... but's still a but funny that he'd know nine languages and they wouldn't include the main one of his country!

@@crispincain5373 The "You Bet Your Life" revival began on KTLA. NBC was about to destroy all 11 years of the show, but somebody had the good sense to call Groucho's partner, John Guedel, who told them to send all the episodes that had not been destroyed to him. Guedel was quite aware of the revived interest in Groucho, and he persuaded the general manager of KTLA to put it on. KTLA aired it five nights a week at 11 PM and the ratings were so good that other stations picked it up.

They don't lose the money they won in the quiz. Under the rules during the last two years of the show any couple that wins at least $500 gets a chance at the wheel. One contestant picks a number for a total of $10,000; the other picks one for a total of $5000. If neither number comes up when the wheel is spun, the question is worth a total of $2000. So this couple had its $700 augmented to $2000, divided equally; had they missed the question they would have kept the $700 ($350 apiece).
