Hi Glen. Your dream is very similar to mine but your execution is spectacular. We found 2.6 hectares in ZdN and negotiated a great price. Filled with coconut trees which produce a modest income and we'll put in a lot of fruit trees. Just finished putting up a temporary bamboo house, and have completed plans for dream home... BUT... turned out we have to scale the house way back because they cannot bring in heavy equipment over the connecting bridge. You and your wife have done an absolutely beautiful home.

Glenn and Ruby's story is truly inspiring, especially for those pursuing dreams later in life, embracing the opportunities granted by God. It also highlights the importance of finding a genuine, committed woman who stands by you until the end of the journey, uncorrupted by the modern world. Many of us touched by their story live as shepherds, not mere consumers, and it is uplifting to know there is a place where wisdom and life experience are valued by women like Ruby, with the 'breadwinner' character Glenn so lovingly described. Thanks for sharing their story and yours as well, it's truly appreciated.

There is a saying in the Philippines Rob. If you want to make a small fortune you start off with a large one. Undoubtedly there are many successful expat businessmen in the Philippines but there are also many more who have been financially ruined. The main reason for their ruination is the opposite sex. Glens advantage is his indepth knowledge of Filipino culture and wise choices in relationships.

@@glennlewman4186 Hi Glen, Great to hear of you Philippine experiance to date. Like you we also chose to set up home in the Bukid. We purchased a lot in the town of Talakag on the main hyway opposite the Central School close to the Plaza back in the early 80's. At that time we both worked in Nigeria with no real plans then to retire in the Philippines. In 2005 we did decide to retire a bit earlier than the UK retiral age and we built a 3 bed bungalow. My wife of now 40 years had the foresight to build a house on one level as she said as we get older we are not always able to climb stairs and carry out maintenance tasks. I'm so glad I took her advice. We moved to Talakag in 2008 bought a new Izusu Crosswind from CebuSouthern Motors in CdeO to be independant and to shop in CdeO 33Kms from our front door 30mins to Uptown SM. In 2013 my wife insisted I had a check up when back in the UK which we returned to each year as we kept an Apartment there (bolthole). I was diagnosed with Angina and had an emergancy Angioplasty proceedure carried out. I was either that or a heart bypass. Fortunstely the stents have so far done the job. My wife always had reservations however and discussed going back to the UK to live ss medical facilites are better and free due to my membership of the UK NHS which I had subscribed to all my working life. So in 2019 April after selling our property, vehicle and everything else we owned apart from the clothes we wanted and some sentimental items we left for the UK. By the way the proceeds of the sale of our assets arrived back in the UK before we did. We were fortunate to leave when we did to avoid Covid and all its problems. Our son and family live in the UK and our daughter who moved to Sidney ater she graduated has since moved to LA with her family. When in the Philippines we travelled extensively around the Philippines and drove all over Mindanao, Bohol and Camiguin. We loved the Philippines but in fairness as grand children arrived we have 4 now 2 in the UK and 2 in the US my wife wanted to spend time with them hence also the reason for returning to the UK. We have returned to Talakag twice since leaving last year September and this year July. Having just over 40 years association with the Philippines like you I garnered a lot of experiance and friendships and seen a lot of people pass on. I always say life is what you make of it and one mans meat is another mans poison. But the most important thing I have learned in life "No condition is permanent", incidentally both times we have recently visited Talakag we have driven past Libona having taken the Indahag road to our friends farm in Manolo Fortich. I still noticed a section of your road has not been finished hahaha!!! Take good care both. Regards Jim & Marilou Cunningham.

Great video for me to run across. I live near Dumaguete up in the mountains (at 2400 feet in elevation) between Dauin and Zamboanguita. These two are telling almost my exact story except for location. One difference is that I do have bars on the windows of our house for two reasons. One we sleep with our screened windows open at night and two because when you leave especially for several days or weeks someone might be tempted to steal your junk. In an area like this people do not have stoves, refrigerators, indoor plumbing or even water. safety is NOT an issue even at the end of the road 11 kilometers from the highway. Its very quiet and sometimes I get a little bored up here, 5 miles away from the closest foreigner. I just go into town for a coffee and pretty soon most of the foreigners remind me why i love the quiet of the mountain. Once your house and property is paid for you will struggle to spend $1000.00 per month for a wonderful life eating anything you desire. I also don't drink or chase the little girls (the two activities that drive your monthly spending way up). If you rent a nice western style house like ours it will add $600 - $700 a month easily to your budget. Crazy how close to our set up this couple has.😲

"so much better than living in a City" I agree Chrissy. I love what Glenn and Ruby are creating. The idea of a sustainable house and garden matches my dream. Using worm poop to create fabulous soil. Their house is way bigger than I would like, and I would prefer a bungalow style, but the big ideas are all the same. So, the question is, was Glenn serious about being adopted into the tribe to be able to access forest land? I would love to know more about that process, understanding that you don't own the land outright, at least for a period of time.

Hi Paul, thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Yes, both Glenn and Ruby were adopted into the tribe. The house is big and nice, but I hope the kids will grow to appreciate more the garden and gardening, and just everything and anything that they're able to enjoy doing, or the things that are available to them outside of their house and just within their property. Again, the house is surely going to look stunning both inside and outside. But I think even the most beautiful house that eyes can see will be quickly forgotten with just a simple glimpse outside through the window, it's just stunning, stunning.

It cost less than 100 bucks for the check up. The home looks fabulous, obviously he is his own contractor and he has US construction and agriculture experience.

Only thing missing to make it easy access for that new house would had been an elevator. Stairs are not friendly when getting older. I understand that he will have a bedroom on the main floor which is a good option. 😊 thanks for showing your setup of gardening and the construction of that beautiful house. 😅

For those of us that don't know, what are you referring to when you say land use rights? Is that private land you are leasing? Is it government owned land? What are the requirements to keep the land?

You buy the use rights from indigenous peoples- individuals- you need to improve the land, farm, and occupy as in guest house etc

Wow 😊, very interesting interview and hats off to Glen . He is definitely a creative and optimistic adventurer . I deliberately didnt call him a dreamer even though he has a creative vision that has been driving him to build his paradise on the hill. I admire his positive vibes but I am a bit worried about how he will cope with the steps and the incline as he gets older, because he stated that in his current state of health ,he isnt able to do much . I am wondering if a property on a flatter ground and a house without steps wouldn't be more suitable for him in the future? Ruby is a very lucky woman and I couldn't help but thinking that Glen must have a LOT of trust in her because technically foreigners cant legally own land in the Philippines and i have heard of so many horrow stories about foreigners building houses and then getting kicked out of them. But I suppose Ruby is a honest woman of integrity with a good conscience and high moral standards. What Glen is building is something that I wish i could do too, but on a smaller scale. I dont have half a million bucks to play with or 3K to live on monthly, but this has definitely given me a vision and an insight of what I could have in the future. I need to do some research, because I also would love to have a place in the Philippines with about 3 acres of land with a river running through the land and a nice house too( but not as big as Glen's) I retire in 5 years time from the UK and have never been to the Philippines, but I have spoken to a LOT of the wrong type of Filipinas on Cupid Filipina dating app. Unfortunately, I got scammed a few times, but now I have a much better idea of how many of the scams work and the mentality of the wrong type of Filipinas . I am going to start looking at fares and going to take the plunge. I am going to take a trip, rent a car and drive around and see what I find , learn and discover. I am not sure if there are trains or metros that can take me from Manila Airport to other Cities or towns..so if anyone reading this can tell me how to get around from the Airport, I would appreciate it. I saw in a video where the traffic is crazy like New York and that the taxi drivers can really try to rip you off. Seen a few videos of people taking boats to get to places , but I like trains and driving cars ( not fond of mopeds ) as ways of getting around. I am happy for a chat if anyone wants to chat . My WhatsApp is+447947657542 and I am on Facebook as Mark Con Smith, you can send me a message in messenger in there. Please dont send me a friend request without a message because I get a lot of friend request all the time, but I wont accept a friend request from someone that I haven't met in person unless they send me a message,so I knoe who they really are and why they are friend requesting me. Dont let that put you off though, i am a really friendly and chatty guy with a good sense of humour ans and I love meeting people, so I hope to hopefully hear from someone soon and if anyone knows of a honest, cute, intelligent Filipina without children, but wants kids in the future and loves farming and healthy living , I would love to hear about them. Thanks in advance 😊🙏🏾😊

The good thing is the foreigner was have a lot of knowledge about businesses and good investment. The most important thing is a woman who has also a knowledge about good investment too. And, sadly to some foreigners that spending their money in the Philippines for leisure, fun and different women. Or, a foriegner that have a bad addiction to drigs and alcohol. No wonder some foriegner ends up broke in the Philippines. You really have to think wisely not only for investment, but also for choosing a woman beside you.

This should be the example, don't go to the Philippines just to a have good time and be a loser in the end and become a homeless expat, go to the Philippines to be rich in a good way, not the Chinese syndicates ways. Philippines is a developing country so if you're from a well develop country and have a knowledge on something, like for example farming or construction use that knowledge to become rich in the Philippines.
