He is not lying or exaggerating. I took Mark's in-person class in Austin and can now paint at a level that I never dreamt. I had zero artistic experience and knowledge. I spent my entire career as a research scientist, never taking a single painting or drawing class in high school or college. In fact, I didn't even know how to add medium to oil paints, but thankfully for Mark's paints, the medium was already added. I watched his videos before attending the class in the hopes that I wouldn't embarrass myself or waste my time, but he took his time with me, explained the steps and let me at it. At the end of the week, I completed half of a still life, which people who I've shown it to, cannot believe that I did it (including art professors). I always thought that people who could paint were those rare people in the world who had "talent", but Mark's method breaks down the process into doable steps...draw the still life, mix the paints and put the paint onto the canvas. If you have an accurate drawing, your hallway there. Then, if you mix the paints and accurately match the values and colors, well, you've got the colors down. Now, you just have to apply the paint in the correct spots. Perhaps, it is a step-by-step process that the "talented" people come about naturally, but for the rest of us, it is a method that can get you to paint like they do. It really WORKS!

I just want to leave a big thank you Carder for your videos here on youtube. I have learned so much from you so I always try to give you credit when talking about my art journey!

You have been an inspiration to me. Your talent and generosity, conveyed through KZbin, gave me the confidence to finally start oil painting after years of thinking, "I'd like to paint," but not having a clue of how to start. Your KZbin videos help me tremendously, and I can only imagine that in-person classes are all that much more rewarding and helpful. I started with still life as you suggest, but I've now transitioned to landscapes and space art. Landscapes as seen from the various rocky bodies of our solar system are my favorite subjects. I'm a 20-year veteran planetarium director, science writer, and editor, and my art combines with them beautifully. Thanks for everything, Mark!

Dear Mark , I love your approach and I actually learnt painting by using your approach , after more than 10 years today I prefer more abstract painting not highly realistic . I think Surgent painting are abstract too ! actually we don't need a lot of details for a realistic painting !

It's a shame I don't have the chance to attend your classes in person (not in the US) but your videos here definitely transformed the way I paint. That one demo referencing the peaches got me inspired to paint my very first still life that I felt so proud of. Hope to at least go through your online classes soon. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

Can I use your technique with acrylics or gouache? I can't use oil paints.Even the water mixable paints make me sick. I clearly have some kind of allergy

Have you tried oil painting without the use of solvents?
@ATFstein3 ай бұрын
@@bdml77 use marks line it’s called Geneva fine art. Zero solvents
@bdml77Ай бұрын
@kakenetit2 yes, the water mixable oils don't require solvents but they still really bothered me. I hate acrylic because they're so unpleasant to work with but have found gouache to be safe for me and more workable than acrylic. I might give the water mixable oils another try outdoors and see if that makes a difference. I think I'm allergic to something in the paint

You can paint and draw realistic on traditional and digital. But digital can never replicate an painting or colored pencils. You can still tell its digital

Hi... I am not in art but I have a question. After camera invention what is the point to make realistic art??? Camera can deliver mor detail picture effectively and more easily, why I spent hours or days to paint or draw it ??? Abstract art or expressive art style more depth & opportunity to express feelings emotions spirituality etc.
@raf_lisz2 ай бұрын
Because it is not about creating more detail effectively. In fact when you look close at a lot of art that Mark enjoys in his other videos, it shows wild expressions of paint. When you crop these sections they essentially look like expressive art. By enabling yourself to paint "realistically" you learn a technique which you can apply to other styles of painting - please look at the romantic painters, Pre-Raphaelite, Symbolist painters or Surrealistic painters. They are not at all "realistic" but they understood the core foundation of that and changed it into what they needed. If you look early at Dali's career, he did "realistic" portraits and landscapes - I am sure this helped him in the end of his career to make those fantastical imagery. You wouldn't build a house on a bad foundation, build a cabinet with poor understanding of joinery, create music without basic music theory - the same applies here. "Realistic" painting provides a lot of foundational insight into structure, processes, colour theory and composition. Believe it or not - but restrictions create a greater sense of freedom in making and creation. My knowledge comes from selling various fine art materials to various professional artists, as well as being an oil painter. I hope this information helps.

We see differently than a camera. Do you want a realistic picture the way a camera sees it or the way a person sees it?
@Broody58Ай бұрын
Customers are a seperate skill you have to learn about besides your art. Some say "I'd like a.." simple.. They'd have no problem with a down payment. ( id always insist on it to cover materials) Then theres the ones who nit pick every detail & colors, everything.. but cant do it themselves. They'd Never have the down payment to start. Then the in betweens know what they want, particular, pay the down, but alter what id have chosen in the process. Those..id never sign when completed. Because i ..didn't create it, i just painted it. Made me feel like an art prostitute. I was asked many times, " what if i dont like it? I told them id give thier money back, but you dont get the painting. I never ended up giving money back, & they loved the paintings. Yes its straight up business. Your art is a product. & word of mouth is your best advertising. If it's really good, people will ask about it, signed or not. Give buyers a few business cards to pass along. Do what You think is right! If customer questions it in process, tell them the reasons of your choices. They usually go along & gain respect for your knowledge & expertise.

Photo realism is probably a good skills based education to progress to developing your own character style of painting. You have to tap into your soul identity. Painting like a photo???
@kakenetit23 ай бұрын
Mark is talking about realism, not photo realism. There is a difference.

some people have to take private classes and they will still fail with 50 years, some people can just use the right colors with ease because its "inborn talent" Sargent. You can also use this boring method if you like meassuring and sadness.
