My first time watching Wait Until Dark (1967). I went in as blind as possible! Suzy DEFINED COURAGE as she slowly unraveled the clues and the very real danger she was in. Such a great watch. I hope you enjoyed my Wait Until Dark movie reaction & commentary

When I was in high school, my sister rented this and said I had to watch it with her. She then proceeded to turn off all of the lights in our basement tv room for the showing. When the film reached that big climactic showdown with all of the lights out, OMG, did my heart rate skyrocket! Then, when Harry just LEAPT out of nowhere, I think I jumped about five feet off of the couch. Four years later, I was at the video store with a college friend who had never seen this film, and I recreated my sister’s tactics, with the satisfaction of watching my friend just elevate off of her couch! So much fun. Stephen King called Harry Roat, Jr., one of the best villains in screen history.

Yes, but one of her very best of performances is in fantastic film so terribly titled that it’s no wonder young people won’t see it. Fred Zinnemann directed her and Peter Finch in ‘The Nun’s Story’. It’s fascinating, actually, how Hepburn’s character simply isn’t cut out to be a nun, and what she puts herself through as she’s unwilling to accept that. Oh, and she bought all of her OWN clothes from Paris for this movie. 🍿

Richard Crenna did such a great job in a rare role as a villain in this film. He always was the nice guy, such as geeky Walter Denton in the old "Our Miss Brooks" radio show and as Luke McCoy in "The Real McCoys". BTW, the first time I watched this movie I was eating popcorn and when Alan Arkin jumps out at Audrey Hepburn, the bowl of popcorn went flying all over the living room. When this movie came out in 1967, the entire theater would go black when Susy (Audrey Hepburn) turned out all the lights in her apartment. The audiences weren't able to see, putting them in the same position as the characters. Since then, safety regulations have been passed requiring a minimum level of lighting in screening rooms, even when the movie is running. So if you see this movie in a theater today, you won't have the same experience they had 55 years ago. If you watch it at home, it might be possible to block any light from coming into the room.

Another great reaction. Thanks, Chris. In the documentary, "A Look in the Dark," about the making of this film, Alan Arkin said that at one of the early screenings of the film, which he hadn't seen yet, he was giving an interview in the lobby, while the picture was being shown. He heard the screams of about a thousand people and it scared the hell out of him. He said, "What's that?" The interviewer said, "It's you!"

Roat was a tremendously difficult role to cast, as just about every actor who'd be appropriate for the part knew full well they'd have a very hard time shaking the image of tormenting a blind Audrey Hepburn. Luckily, Alan Arkin did indeed do very well for himself afterward.

@@CasualNerdReactions "Wait Until Dark" is a superior example of a "high concept" film, a movie with a simple but intriguing premise with lots of entertainment potential. Also, if you're unsure if you've seen Arkin before, he won an Oscar for playing the grandpa in "Little Miss Sunshine". He was also the film producer in "Argo" who always says "Argo fff yourself", and he was the dad in "Edward Scissorhands". Also, the year after "Wait Until Dark", he gave his best and most powerful performance as a deaf-mute in the criminally underseen gem "The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter".

One of the best jump scares ever! So glad you reviewed this film - I never feel like it gets enough love. Great villains, great heroine who turns the tables on her tormentors, turning a sizeable disadvantage into her greatest strength. My only gripe is Sam at the ending, insisting that she walk to him instead of immediately rushing to her arms. I get what they were going for thematically, but WHAT IS WRONG WITH HIM!? Deep cut Chris. One of the best thrillers ever. Based on a Broadway play (was lucky enough to see a revival yrs ago with Marisa Tomei and Quentin Tarantino which was excellent). Audrey Hepburn was such a great star and actress and this was so out of her comfort zone - I think this also is one of the first films to have a handicapped heroine in peril fighting back. In the '60s there was a whole genre of thrillers featuring actresses from the classic era, usually even older than Audrey Hepburn, being put in some kind of jeopardy. 'Lady in a Cage' had Olivia de Havilland as a wealthy invalid trapped inside her home elevator while her house is invaded by a gang led by James Caan. 'Eye of the Cat' had Eleanor Parker as a wealthy invalid (see a pattern?) whose nephew/heir (Michael Sarrazin) and his girlfriend are plotting to murder to get her money--except he's terrified of her numerous pet cats (has a classic scene involving a wheelchair and one of San Francisco's very steep streets).

This same year, Audrey Hepburn made another movie, Two for the Road, in which she's even better, maybe her all-time best. It's a wryly comedic look at a marriage, told not in chronological order but geographical order, intercutting a couple's 5 trips north to south through France.

Prior to this film, Richard Crenna was portraying Luke McCoy on the tv series "The Real McCoys" (think of it as the 1957-63 Waltons), so his 'brand' was young man of good character; this was a huge departure from that image. This was also a big departure for Alan Arkin, who 1957-66 had mainly played parts on tv series and mostly comedic roles. Jack Weston had already had an extremely varied and full career in film and tv by 1967, mostly character work but the full gamut from dark drama to ludicrous comedy. Still, Weston was not a name that sprang to mind when you needed an actor to portray a murderous minion. A departure, too, for the blind woman to be played by Audrey Hepburn. In all, an oddly-cast production. But DAMN! how well it worked. Such a GREAT MOVIE. I actually saw this film in first-run in the theater, and that last leap from a stabbed murderer made me scream and jump! But the slow movement of the fridge door, revealing Hepburn had survived the event...

To me, one of the chief reasons this film is so wonderful is the great script by Frederick Knott, with its intricate plotting in which each detail is essential. The same is true (and probably even more so) of his other screenplay (adapted from his stage play) for the 1953 Hitchcock movie Dial M for Murder. I strongly recommend that one to you if you haven't seen it: it sounds like the kind of thing you would love, just as I do.

This was a completely different role for Alan Arkin after seeing him a few years earlier in the cold war comedy "The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming" (highly recommend), then later "The In-Laws" with Peter Falk. He was pretty amazing in this and the jump scene made this 10 year old jump.

Audiences were warned that at the most terrifying part of the film the theater managers had been instructed to turn ALL lights in the auditorium off or as low a light level as was allowed by state safety standards. Audiences were warned to stay seated for their own safety.

Definitely one of my favorites! I first watched this in middle school with friends spending the night. Only, we watched it in black and white, and let me tell you we threw the popcorn bowl when Roates jumped out at the end! If you like, Audrey Hepburn movies, I would recommend charade. It also stars, Cary Grant, another amazing Hollywood actor. It is public domain so sometimes it’s difficult to find. It is a bit of a thriller, but not a horror type movie. It is another one of my favorites, it is very comedic and amazing!

You're the first one I know to react to this classic thriller! I hope others do the same soon! That climatic jump scare really got me too! The movie may not have been directed by Alfred Hitchcock, but it may as well.

I watched this in 1967, with my sister, when I was 12 on an Air Force Base in Japan ......oh my gosh.....at the time, it was the scariest movie I'd ever seen........when he lunged at her and grabbed her foot and when she's trying to close the refrigerator.......Audrey Hepburn is such a talented actress and a very classy lady........I recently heard filming was difficult for her because she was going through a divorce from the films producer .......she said Richard Crenna ( who i watched on the Real McCoys as a young child) was a friend to her while making the movie........Gloria really added to the movie.......she was also in the Broadway version with Lee Remick in 1966.......there's a video of her as an adult in San Francisco on KZbin............I watched the movie lastweek......it's still scary even though i know the ending is good.......I had forgotten that Gloria "borrowed" the doll............my dad worked at the base theater as an extra job.....his family could watch movies free........we probably saw 100 movies during the 3 years we were stationed there

Grant turned down the role in Roman Holiday because being 25 years older than Hepburn he thought it an undignified role, chasing after such a young "girl". He agreed to do Charade with a rewrite: that *she* was romantically chasing after *him* instead, which the filmmakers realized made the film a helluva lot funnier, and thus...the masterpiece that is Charade.

Hey, just found your channel, and I love your reactions. This is such a great movie, and it's so underrated. I love the scene where Susy smashes all the light bulbs, especially combined with the soundrack. I'm sure people have mentioned it, but when it came out, during the bulb smashing scene, each light in the cinema went out one by one, even the exit light, so the audience were left in the pitch black.

Just wait until they're older. 🙂 My dad has a collection of movies from the 50s to the 80s. When I was a kid, he'd ask me to watch An Affair to Remember over and over; and I flamed the heck out of that poor movie. Now that I'm older, I seek out classics (both films and music) on my own. So, don't lose hope- kids' taste change over time.

If you get a chance, check out Alan Arkin in Little Miss Sunshine! He’s a joy as the hard-spoken no B.S. grandpa in that movie, and you get to discover what I’ll call “grandpa’s revenge” at the end!

I first saw this as a televised play on HBO in 1982 starring Katherine Ross and Stacy Keach. Truly love that version as well. It was the original play staged and shot with television cameras. Stacy Keach and Katherine Ross were fantastic as well. The Quentin Tarantino, Marisa Tomei and Stephen Lang version was probably videotaped or archived somewhere for posterity. I would love to see that version even though it got very bad reviews. I wish there was some kind of video or filmed version of the original Broadway cast. Lee Remick and Robert Duvall sound like a fantastic pairing 🎭
