5:30 Understanding methane
It's no secret that plant-based meats have been marketed as healthier and more environmentally friendly alternatives to real meat. However, these claims are not entirely accurate.
While plant-based meats contain some nutrients, they simply can’t compare to those found in real meat, such as protein, B vitamins, iron, selenium, and zinc. Plant-based meats may try to replicate these nutrients through added chemicals and synthetic ingredients, but they can never match the natural composition of real meat.
The production process of plant-based meats involves using chemicals and additives that may pose health risks. For example, the Impossible Burger contains yeast that creates a synthetic version of the blood protein heme from soy. This ingredient is classified as a color additive and hasn't been thoroughly tested for safety.
Regarding environmental impact, plant-based meats are often touted as a more sustainable option than real meat. However, they require a lot of resources to produce, including water and land. If we look at California almonds, they use ten times more fresh water than cattle.
On the other hand, real meat production uses resources that would otherwise be wasted. For instance, 85 percent of livestock feed comes from non-human edible materials, including corn stalks, beet pulp, and soybean plants.
Cows play a crucial role in maintaining the health of our land. They can graze on terrain unsuitable for growing crops, and their manure is a natural fertilizer for plants. Removing cows from the equation would negatively impact our food production system. One of the main arguments against real meat is the methane emissions from livestock. When looking at the big picture, these emissions are roughly 2.7 percent, which isn’t significant enough to make a real difference.
These emissions are also part of a natural cycle. Plants absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store it in the soil, which is then consumed by livestock and released as methane. This methane eventually breaks down to become carbon dioxide again, completing the cycle.

I’m Canadian and we were taught the four main food groups growing up. What interesting is that? Three of the four groups are not necessary for human existence. What’s even funnier is you can exchange one for another. You can absolutely live a long, healthy life being plant-based and you can also live a long healthy life eating just meat. They also list dairy as an essential even though a third of the world is literally lactose intolerant. It’s mind blowing. Then, as I got older, they changed it to the eating right pyramid, which had refined grains as the thing you’re supposed to eat the absolute most of. In the grocery store, you still find, low-fat, yogurts, and all of that, even though they taste worse and are bad for you. Pretty much everything I was taught as a kid was wrong. At least for adults, breakfast is absolutely unnecessary. It’s healthier to intermittent fast. Basically everything I was taught was wrong.

I live in rural Missouri in an area where lots of cattle are raised. With very few exceptions nobody feeds their cattle grain here. They are literally all grass fed, because it is expensive and wasteful to feed "row crops" to cattle. Now here are the exceptions that I've seen. 1. Some people will specifically ask for, and pay for grain finished beef. 2. In some cases farmers will plant winter wheat as a cover crop, for soil management. I've seen cattle grazing in green, immature wheat fields, which results in healthy cattle and also a wheat harvest in the fall. 3. During drought years when the corn crop fails I've seen farmers cut, chop and ferment the failed corn to feed cattle during the lean months when the grass won't grow. I've also seen failed corn crops baled for the same reason. Other than that, beef is 90 percent the product of grass and rainwater. Nothing else compares to it.

Well, there’s all the small ruminants. I’m going to make a case for sheep because goats and the camelids aren’t common. Sheep are way more efficient at converting grass if you are looking at yield by any metric but labor, and if people are going to nitpick water use my flock seems to drink about half the water my cattle do by weight. Also in remote areas sheep can tolerate walking a lot further to water from grazing because before domestication it’s what they were already doing. I like beef very much, but if we’re going to try and maximize our grassland acreage and steward it effectively I think we need more folks eating sheep. Lamb is more expensive primarily because it doesn’t benefit from the same subsidized gains as CAFO beef fed corn and soy, and because it isn’t viewed as a staple in the same way as beef. Energetically it costs less.

@@paulfay357 I think they’re a lot less intelligent than cattle, but all animals definitely have their own emotional lives. I guess being low rent and not able to end your life with a kick helps them be easy pets. I have hair sheep and a lot of diversity in coats. This time of year when they’re back grazing with fresh lambs sometimes I’ll see three generations of mothers all cudding together with their lambs. It’s probably very common for them to be in family groups, but I can only identify a few maternal lines without reading tags. I harvest a couple hundred head a year, but I don’t really have that issue because I love my flock and act in its best interest. It is not in a flocks best interest to keep all their progeny. Their evolutionary strategy is strength in numbers and they are in symbiosis with their predators. Without them the population will grow exponentially destroy their source of food, and collapse. I’ve got a couple friendlier ones with names, but when they have to go, they go. The way I see it we are members of a super organism which is the flock and all individuals will be replaced. I have replaced other shepherds and will be replaced just like it’s been since humanity brought the ovines into our fold. I take care of them and they take care of me.

It also makes my blood boil to hear these fools degrade our industry and perpetuate the false narrative that not only beef but all red meat in general is “unhealthy “ or “bad for the environment.” Ranchers are among the best stewards of the land, and what we go through to feed millions of people often gets misrepresented. The more we learn about nutrition and the so called “food pyramid “ that the snake oil salesman have been pushing for decades upon us, the more people are opening their eyes to what belongs on your plate, and that is beautiful red meat! There's another thing that's not mentioned and that's the machinery needed to grow, process and transport crops which is far more than needed for animal farming, you've got to plough the land, you've got to plant seeds, you've got to spray the crops, you've got to feed the crops, you've got to supply water for the crops, you've got to harvest the crops, fill trucks, store it, transport it, it's very machinery intensive.
@chrislee6650
@chrislee6650 19 күн бұрын
Also the majority of crops then have to be processed into food we can actually eat and needs other ingredients (and additives to preserve the food for further transport and often ultra processing), whereas we can just eat a steak or pork or chicken and get a nutritional meal. I think the move from cows and farmers to big chemical companies making 'food' is because the elites want to move the cash from the farming industry into their own stocks and shares.

Storing crops is by far not more resource intense than storing meat. Quite the opposite. One of the reasons why crops have replaced meat as staple when humans discovered domestication is because crops are cheap to mass produce and longterm store. Before the industrialised mass production of salt and ice, the only feasable way to preserve meat was to dry and smoke it, making it last, at most, six months. With grain, all you need is a clay pot and some wax or tar seal and the grain will be good for several hundred years. Also, you need only 4 accres of grain cultivation to feed an adult for a year, but you need a lot more land than that per person if you want to eat meat. Growing crops is labour intensive during seed and harvest, growing meat is labour intensive all year round in all seasons and weather. Before domestication of plants and lifestock, humans only ate plants that were seasonally available, and never ate grains or seeds. Meat was the primary staple even before we learned how to hunt. We were scavengers and carion feeders, only supplementing our meals with plant matter for the sweet flavour of fruits and berries or to get through rough times when carion or prey was scarce. And of course, there always have been medicinal plants. Inventing crop domestication completely adulterated and perverted our dietary habits.

Also for consideration.. cattle that graze on natural grasslands are harvesting land that often isn’t fit for farm land. And they do it happily and without complaint. Also there is a reduction on petroleum fuel used which never gets mentioned in these “scientific “ studies. Cough cough. Furthermore, beef raised on grasslands will have a much more natural ratio of 3 to 6 fatty acids. And if they are in a pasture vs a feed lot they will get more exercise (healthy) need less antibiotics (healthy) consume less agricultural byproducts (healthy) and be less stressed (also healthy). Like any “food” we are presented with, beef can be incredibly healthy for humans to consume or incredibly unhealthy. (Think fast food meat). The choice is yours.

You missed something important i.e. agrichemicals. I now live in a rural village surrounded by hilly land too steep for arable crops. It gets grazed by cattle and sheep, they eat the grass and they poo - and that's it. Fifteen years ago I lived in a different village 10 miles away and was surrounded by mostly arable (cereal crops) fields. While just bare earth, as the fields were for the winter months, the farmer would spread tons of artificial fertiliser on the land. During the growing season, the crop would be sprayed with chemicals (twice if I remember rightly). Although the farmer abided by the laws while spraying, I still shut my windows and brought my pets in. What is the environmental impact of the manufacture and transport of all those chemicals? When I moved here I soon noticed the much greater quantity and diversity of wildlife, from insects to mammals (I'm an amateur wildlife photographer )

Gotta love this, so good to see a Dr vocalising some broader knowledge on this subject. The only downside I see in the explanation about the waste of crops being used for cattle feed is no mention on if the crop was GMO and the issues around some chemical sprays ingested then you're still left with a meat that isn't so good for us. Hence the lean toward grass based and organic methods for stock feed. Also would be good to expand on the fake meat produced in the lab is out of cattle cells which therefore isn't truly vegetarian at all on a molecular level, so as far as I'm concerned is false advertising just less cows killed in the process!

Dairies get a lot more variety of grains combined to make their rations, but all of them use blends of silage, corn, grass, mineral additives, etc., to make the most nutritiously based food for these animals. A grass fed cow has only grass and mineral/salt licks to supplement what the grass lacks, but the grain fed cattle get a lot more. I've never seen any place inoculate cattle, except maybe calf breeders who are fighting a flu. But everything else, is completely nutrition based feeding.

That includes reject CANDY, cotton seeds, and yes, reject animal products. This topic is so complex though. My husband and I started eating vegetarian/vegan during the week and having meat on the weekends with the kids. We like having steak for a Saturday night treat. It's so infuriating you can't trust the FDA to have our best interests at heart. As to the complexity, the factory farmed beef, chicken, eggs industry is atrocious for multiple reasons, including environment and cruelty. Not to mention rain forest deforestation to produce beef, having an impact globally. Then there's the seed monopoly of Monsanto. What really burns my cookies is the absence of discussion of the impact of factory fishing decimating the ocean which seems to be the major environmental impact on carbon, instead of cow farts and fossil fuel. Gates is out there buying up land. Big corporations are in control of the meat and water industry. The Amish farmer in PA is getting stomped on. Where does it stop? I do think the standard American diet is too meat heavy. There needs to be common sense applied at some point. Our food production needs to go back to small independent farmers and the monopoly of the mega producers dissolved to begin with. Seed swapping needs to come back and Monsanto and Gates pushed out of their monopolies. Sorry for the rant... As someone who wants to do the right thing for health, environment, and animals, there seems to be no clear path. 🙄

I regularly get invited with friends to wait in line at food banks because of being low income and needing help with food, but doing low carb eating has made what I can eat out of a food bank box very limited because a lot of the food they offer is high carb with many additives.

@@Cervin_SuisseMost US beef starts on grass and then shipped to the feed lots to fatten on subsidized corn to provide cheap cattle for slaughter to the big four packers who monopolize the market and control prices. The cost of this industrial production is externalized so we have cheap food. We can change that by supporting domestic Grassfed consumption. If we move to consuming higher quality and smaller portions it’s better for our health. “Meat on the side of the plate”. Most of the grassfed beef sold in US comes from Uruguay and Australia and you can purchase grass fed at 5.99/lb and grassfed organic at 7.43/lb at Walmart. Relatively speaking that’s a great value. In terms of low cost beef the dairy industry generates an enormous volume of cull cows which keeps the prices low for the fast food industry and consumers on a budget.

I still don’t but recognize my biology might. What’s important is that we make sure the systems that manage this food source and all animal food sources are life-affirming and offer the animals goods days of being animals until that last bad day rolls around. All your pictures show cows on pastures and clean with space to run and frolic with other cows. People like me want that to be true for all the cows we eat, all the pigs and chickens too and all the fish as well! The way things are now most animals who are grown for food are treated in a horrifying manner, in a way that would make any person with a heart weep. And no particular diet or type of food should be forced on anyone. Some people thrive on keto, some thrive on vegetarian, and some do better somewhere between the two. And to be frank, when the climate grifters scream about "cow farts", I face palm. Lots of dairy farmers set up methane reclamation facilitie. They use those "cow farts" to power and heat their farms, and usually have excess to put back into the grid. Human innovation and adapting to changes is much better then drowning people in fear porn and propaganda.
