Driving instructors suck and they teach a parking method that works on a driving test but is completely useless in real life. Here's how to bay park properly irl!

My instructor only taught me the 90-degree method, but after I passed the driving test, I found that the 45-degree method is more practical because someone behind you may steal your spot while you are lining up with the reference. However, I have discovered that in some situations, you need to use the 90-degree method or an angle larger than 45 degrees if you drive a big car in a tight parking space. There simply isn't enough space to use the 45-degree method. Therefore, both methods are useful and should be taught. To make this video more helpful, you should teach students how to adjust if they get the angle wrong or are about to hit the car to their right, for example, by doing a right full lock forward and a left full lock reverse. Btw it's the same for parallel parking. Real life is different from the exam
@MT-dn4tu
@MT-dn4tu 29 күн бұрын
The parallel park is definitely also worth mentioning. Who in their right mind would parallel park on the side of an empty road or when there's enough space to just glide in? You'll only ever be parallel parking between two cars, you won't be able to use your reference points with smaller spaces, you might be on a road where cars can't pass you and you can't spend all day lining up your reference points. They don't really teach you how to parallel park at all.

Real life parking is so much less stressful than the test thank goodness! I usually use 45 degree method for reverse bay barking and imagine I’m turning into a road when forward bay parking! But if 45 degrees is impossible to do, I do 90 but if avoidable, I don’t do it! Great content as always Francis you legend - keep it up! Hope that your well!

I started doing this method to park at work only a few weeks after passing my test as the carpark is almost always very busy and I was forced to park between cars. Doing the 90° method I was taught I realised how much it confused other drivers and also how difficult it was to park between two cars as I couldn't see the guidelines my instructor taught me to look for as easily. The more of these kinds of video I watch, the more I realise my instructor taught me how to pass my test, not how to drive in real life

I have almost never used the 90 degree method since passing. Relies too much on reference points that always change rather than spacial awareness I found. "Drive 3 bay lines on from the space..." My driveway doesn't have bay lines!

I was taught the 45 degree method and still practising it 1 month after passing the test. But in your defence, the best teachers are those who are reflective on their practice and like many others I have found your videos both informative and very reassuring. So go easy on yourself, I still love watching the videos for advice and for your most friendly demeanour. That is sometimes more important than teaching the perfect parking method!:)

I told my instructor the same thing when I was taught the "90 degree method". The instructor told me to understand the mechanics behind it and apply it. Which I broke it down to making sure the rear end of the car faces the space you want to park in to and having good spatial awareness - understanding what you are seeing in the mirrors and where the car is in relation to the environment.

I was only taught 90 degrees and haven't used it once since passing a few months ago. It's forward in if there's lots of space, 45 degrees reverse if it's between 2 cars. It's not something I have to do often so I'm still working it out!

I was originally taught the 90 degree method, but really couldn’t understand how it would make sense to use in real life. Think it’s great that you shared the 45 degree method with viewers, as it feels more practical to use in a busier car park! (Also, as you start the manoeuvre closer to the bay you want with this method, it prevents other drivers from stealing your bay as you’re doing it 😂)
@wrightwoodwork

The only time it's useful is you're looking for the space and spot someone leaving and drive past so they can get out. They bock traffic in the direction they go oe slow them down then you reverse in. As long as no idiot pulls through you're good

@wrightwoodwork
@wrightwoodwork 4 ай бұрын
@snipesjuanr7762 yes 45 is easier but if someone is about to leave you sometimes have to drive past so that they can leave the space. It's no use blocking them in as you need the space and they need to leave. It doesn't matter if you do 45 or 90 both start going into the space at the same 45 or more angle .

My instructor only taught me the 90° way, and it was the first thing I ditched when I passed my test. It’s not just more practical to do the 45° method (especially if your first car is a pretty long Mondeo), but it’s easier to judge and manoeuvre. There’s so much more leeway to manoeuvre, which means I can get into the space nice and efficiently, and nobody else is held up while I faff around. It’s a win for everyone. Just angle the car and whack it in! Can’t go wrong.

My driving instructor taught me the 45 degree method before any other bay parking, and it was very hard to get right, took me at least a dozen attempts before I understood it. I still prefer the 90 degree method for its simplicity, but honestly, I find all the reference points you have to remember on all your manoeuvres quite tricky.

Love love love this. So many instructors think it has to be done at 90 for the test. This needs to get out there. There are so many instructors that think lots of things are needed on test that aren’t and as such teach Way OTT. Ask your instructor if that’s the way they do it IRL. If not why do they teach like that?

Whether I reverse park a car or an artic lorry, I’ll always do the 45 degree prep. With a car I identify the bay then position my car at 45 degrees and then reverse in, guiding it in. With an artic I see the bay, full lock left, get the trailer 45 degrees, full lock right get the head 90 degrees to the bay, straighten the wheels and then reverse in. As the trailer straightens up with the bay, slowly decrease the angle of the head and eventually I’m in. But as I said, for both car and artic lorry, 45 degrees. If there’s not enough space to facilitate a 2-move reverse for the lorry I’ll just improvise. But for cars there’s always space to do the 45-er.

It's much easier to park in between two cars than an empty space imo. Without lowing the mirrors I can never see the lines in the mirror but can with the cars. I don't tend to use the mirrors though and physically look behind to see when I'm past the car before I start to straighten up. Reversing to the right is a bit easier for me as you can see the lines better.

My instructor thought me the 90 degree method. But when I was practicing on my Brother's car. And I did that method. He complained saying that in real life situation. Specially on packed and tiny bay car parks. You cannot do that 90 degree method. That's why he showed me the, go as near as you can to the bay you want, align yourself on the bay you want, as if you are in the middle of that bay . Then full lock to do the 45 degree angle then check mirrors and reverse back. As for me, I prefer to reverse park on the bay on the right. This is because with the side mirror nearest to me. It is easier to see the bay lines hahaha. (and I adjust the mirror down if needed.) And ever since then I use the same method and always do a reverse park. Even at home into the drive way. This makes it easier to drive out once you are ready to drive off.

I was teached the 90 degree method and haven't used it once since passing. The problem with the 90 degree is you always move away from the bay giving someone else the impression you have passed it. It's more difficult to learn from car to car in my learning experience I drove 5 cars in almost two years. The 45 degree method just makes sense and the 90 degree should just be removing from learning.

I realised after passing my test that all forward and reverse bay parks were always with no other cars around. So I passed having never parked beside/between cars! I’m now considering a parking lesson but can forwards bay park fine and reverse but can take me a few adjustments with reverse. Not parallel parked since before my test so aware I need to sort that too. So much you realise you didn’t cover after passing, my first challenge was to learn how to park up my drive on a slope and I’ve perfected that so I’ll perfectly parking too in time.

Was taught the 3 bays with a reference point. Have discovered this doesn't work, and usually forward park. In fact have discovered that not being taught to reverse round corners where there isn't a reference point is causing me issues, and also reversing up a hill (loads of them where I live). Plus you are not taught to use your mirrors with reversing so much to get througb the test.

What's even worse about this part of the test You can cross the lines in the car test You are not allowed to cross the lines on the motorcycle Mod 1 test, where you have to by hand, back your motorcycle out of a marked bay, and then reverse it into an adjacent bay, hitting the cones that mark the "lines" of the parking bay will automatically fail you. It's strange how out of sync the tests are in that regard, not sure what it's like for other vehicle tests in regards to parking.

Luckily my driving instructor showed me the correct way that also works in real life while cars are parked next to your chosen bay. He said he is teaching me that way because in real life you don't always find empty parking spot that has no cars parked around you

i was taught the 90 degree method by my instructor however my partner taught me how to do the 45 degree reverse parking and the latter is soooo much easier, i always struggled with the 90 degree. I always reverse park by the 45 degrees method

I've no idea how I was taught but it wasn't very well because it's been 13 years and I have never reverse parked in all that time. I also don't even forward park unless the bay next to me is also free

Taught the 90° method and i always say it's not practical in real life. I havent passed yet. I think i have a phobia for parking btw 2 cars. (Forward bay or reverse). I have to look for 2 spaces so i can park. Pls make a video on how to make adjustments if you are getting too close to the car on the right or left.

I'm a little bit confused. Are you saying that if you use the 45 degree method during your test you will automatically fail? That you can only use the 90 degree method in a test. Because I've been taught both methods by 2 different instructors, and tend to use the 45 way most of the time.

Nooo it doesn't matter what method you use on your test. you just have to end up within the lines and do great observation 😊

Thanks. I have to say that the 45 degree method feels more natural.

This would still work! just steer to 45 when you're at the second line of your bay 😊
