In addition, it seems like the new resin moulds are new moulds, and not just a cheap resin dumped into already existing moulds that were originally tooled for metal models. Their current, modern resin is great. The models are great. The FW lines of MESBG models are some of the nicest models I know, even given their tiny stature.

The character models are pretty darn good. I've never had any problems with Blood Bowl or Necromunda models. The large resin vehicles are still pretty dreadful though.
@ArynCrinn10 ай бұрын
It actually wasn't as simple as pouring cheap resin into existing moulds... As explained in an episode of the Painting Phase some time ago, one of the other motivations behind Finecast (other than moving to a more affordable material), was streamlining the packaging process. This involved "spruing up" the old sculpts, so instead of having to pick all the different bits, they'd just grab a single "sprue." Naturally, this required new moulds. What the company execs DID insist on reusing, to the dismay of the product design people, was all the existing spin-casting equipment, rather than all the pressure chambers that they wanted. Spin casting resin? Terrible idea.

You are obviously correct about the relative merits of the two models, but for the sake of fairness it may be worth bearing in mind that the Damsel is a lot younger, looks like she has a healthy diet, and probably takes a good deal more care of herself than old Leopold, who appears to be suffering from a number of ailments that afflict older men. It seems to me what you are showing us here is a) the difference between hand sculpted and digitally sculpted models and b) old highly detailed models vs new rounder, low detailed models (never got why people seem to believe that never models have more details than older models when it's clearly the other way around). There might be a slight improvement in the casting technique but I doubt that it's a big difference.

I was hoping someone would talk about this. New resin is nice looking for sure. If you look at their financial reports GW has been investing in more production in plastic and resin and more inventory capacity. Those one off made to order runs they have are an example of that. They are still growing that portion of their business as fast as they can. Liking the new resin and the increase in model releases these days.

So I don't want to be that guy trying to correct an ex GW employee, but I do have to chime in here and state that a good portion of the information being put out here is actually incorrect. - Believe it or not Games Workshop currently supports 3 types of resin mixtures; Citadel Finecast, and two forms of Forgeworld Resin. One formulation is severly old, and one is newer. I'm not entirely sure why the older FW resin is still being used, but I have to assume it has something to do with the older moulds not being able to support the newer resin. Good examples of each resin type would be the old Commander Farsight miniature (Finecast), old Horus Heresy MK 5 Assault Marines (Old FW Resin), and the New Brettonia miniature lady you're showing (New FW Resin). - The first model shown is not a Citadel Finecast miniature, it is of the older Forgeworld Resin mixture. Citadel Finecast miniatures are actually much more brittle, and chalky in texture. - The examples of the first miniature shown, and the critiques given have less to do with the material it's made out of, and more to do with how the miniature was sculpted by hand. You're just not able to get as crisp of detail with those than you are a CAD generated one. In fact I couldn't even really tell any blatent issues on the first model. It looked rather nice imo. Didn't want to step on any toes, but stuff I wanted to point out.
@MediocreHobbies10 ай бұрын
I understand all your point and agree with what you said. I do know the difference between fine cast and both types of forgeworld resin. Unfortunately I think I binned all my old fine cast stuff. The only point I was really trying to make was a large portion of the fan base have a bad taste in there mouth in regards to gamesworkshop and resin. And that the new sculpts with new resin and so nice and crisp I hope people give them another try. Good point about the hand sculpted v digital. I hadn’t considered that.

I was really excited about Finecast when it was released, because I had lots of experience with models that were really too large to be in metal, and the weight of them would pull them apart. So it was a crushing disappointment to me when my first model arrived with a multitude of bubbles, and the replacement I was sent was as bad, and GW were unable to tell me what their quality control standard was for a good quality cast with their "finecast" resin. It was such a bad experience that it stopped my involvement with the hobby for many years. So, a video like this, looking in detail at the new resin models, is something I appreciate, and might just give me enough confidence to give a resin model from GW another go. The new resin damsel models do look fantastic, so it would be a shame to rule them out entirely just because of how bad my experience with GW resin was in 2011.

I think the biggest issue with Failcast was the molds were designed for metal models and then converted to use resin which required GW to add numerous gates to the model. There were some gates that were almost impossible to remove. In my experience, if the model was designed to be resin, the quality of the model is fantastic and the amount of gates required is minimal. Ugh, the Failcast Servitors were terrible, I own two Failcast and 4 metal ones and the quality between them is very noticeable. The new models designed for resin should be fine, my worry is the old metal models returning in resin.

You should clarify that by "resin" you mean "sculpt". Of course various resins achieves better detail and strength, but what you are talking about is the sculpts and moulds. That is what determines the quality of the figure, not the material it is cast in.
@MediocreHobbies9 ай бұрын
Not entirely true. As the fine cast resin caused so many airbubles and warping.
@CatRaph9 ай бұрын
@@MediocreHobbies Yes but in the video you critique the details and sculpting of the models more than the bubbles and the warping. "This is supposed to be a peacock, it looks more like a pteradactyl". A rant about his badly sculpted face. I heard they were bringing back the Casket of Souls in resin and immediately bought a metal one instead; Failcast has left me extremely distrusting of GW resin products. I had Alarielle the Radiant's shards; she came in bits and pieces instead of being functional and GW did nothing to fix it. Can't find her anymore so I guess I threw her out which is a bit of a shame since I wanted to try repairing her... Oh well! The real problem is they charged a premium for their miniatures because they are advertising them as the highest quality. Then they produce some of the lowest quality models available on the market for that premium price. The loyal GW sycophants all trumpet the narrative of the highest quality though. I've never bought a fail cast miniature. I've got a few from Forgeryworld which have been pretty good generally as the forgeryworld guys spend the time to take their moulds off the 1 in 100 model GW produce in resin that comes out in decent quality. Plus their resin is much higher quality that GW's ever was. Since 3D printing became a thing for me in 2019 though, well there's no point in forgery world now either.

I had 4 squads of finecast striking scorpions to build a single 5 man squad. Beyond being burned by GW resin in the past, if I want to play with resin minis I can buy a 3d printer, all the stls, and enough resin to print a full size army for about the same price of an old world starter set, and the minis will look better than the 20+ year old stuff GW is pushing.

Hardly a fair comparison. While I do not doubt the new resin may really be of better quality, a lot of your criticisms are levelled against the sculpts rather than the actual casting process. It is a lot easier nowadays with computer designed miniatures to sculpt, pose and segment them such that they can be better casted, compared to the hand sculpted masters of the past. And I honestly don't get your beef with Leopold. His face is excellently sculpted, even if it's not to your liking. Better to compare a new re-release of an old model, rather than a new sculpt, if you really want to analyse just the quality of the casting and the material.

None of that Warhammer forge stuff was ‘finecast’, just old Forgeworld resin. I’m not sure if they’ve actually changed this resin, think they’ve just got better at casting it. You’ve done a disservice to how bad actually ‘finecast’ was/is. Those Warhammer Forge models are fantastic compared to some ‘finecast’.
@MediocreHobbies10 ай бұрын
It is indeed new resin.
@johnbruce400410 ай бұрын
That Damsel looks a treat. The resin seems different, smoother for one thing. Although some older resins were coarser, mould care was important and as they are used the surface would erode causing loss of detail.
@joek60010 ай бұрын
@@johnbruce4004 Each silicone mold can give from 30 to around 100 copies depending on the quality of the silicone (and its price). In time the oils in the silicone dry out because of the exothermic reaction of the resin poured in and loses its non adhesive quality. That means that the finer detailed silicone pieces are prone to tearing up or straight up going off the mold resulting to gaps. Its different to the little pot marks made because of air bubbles. That is why resin although can hold the best detail from all materials (even plastic) is so expensive. Cause the molds have to be done again and again limiting the profits. Now if you are a cutthroat corporation with complete disregard to quality control because tour main target group are fan boys that will take everything and say thank you, you dont have to re-do the molds so often.

@@joek600I always thought that finecast models were just adoption of old metal moulds to be used with resin, this is why quality was so much worse, they didn't use silicone moulds Though I may be wrong, I just retold what I heard
@joek60010 ай бұрын
@@gi1dorThats what i heard too. The finecasts were an effort to save money on metal and also to reduce the number of the pickers that filled the blisters from baskets with multiple pieces. The Failcasts were coming on a single frame, so basically we got terrible quality cause GW wanted to save on metal and fire low wage workers. But people should be aware that Forge World is not a guarantee for quality either, cause as I said they tend to use the molds to the point of collapse. Its really a matter of luck, if you get a pack that was early produced while the molds were still fresh, or one of the last batches that will come with all sorts of problems. The air bubble related holes and the slipped castings (result of not closing the mold properly, probably due to haste) are quality control issues that can happen even with fresh molds.

Finecast... what a joke, or more like theft... accidentally bought a finecast model from my local store once, didn't notice, and when I came home I looked at it and wondered what on earth was going on and why it looked so horrible, weird, wrong, and ugly. And the amount of cleaning that needed to be done was ridicules, and the fixing needed to make it not look like ass. Met a guy at the same store that heard me complaining to a friend and he shared his Forge World horror story. The annoying and disrespectful thing from GW is that while making these horrible kits other smaller companies like Raging Heroes and Privateer Press had figured out how to cast beautiful and perfect resin model every time for a lot cheaper than finecast and especially Forge World. Considering how expensive Forge World can be you expect quality, like the smaller companies can produce, but no. Then we have the issue of quality control, they claim to have it but considering what they let through it might as well not exist. It is great that they seem to have improved some of their resin models to make them actually look like what they are supposed to look like but I still don't trust them since there is no way to see what model has been improved and what model still looks like it was drawn by a 3 year old child and then left on the radiator to melt for a week. They had the opportunity to make this change a long time ago but didn't. So I will do what I always do, vote with my wallet and either get proxies from other companies or 3D printed models, for me it's too much money to gamble on quality.

Confusing Video, consistently conflates old forgeworld resin with Finecast. Finecast is way worse than the older forgeworld kits as as well as more extreme warping it has tiny extra tabs fixed all over fine details in a failed attempt to avoid air bubbles in the casting. (This comparison is really just between older hand sculpted forgeworld (which will likely be similar quality when they are reintroduced, you can make a new mould from the master but the sculpt is the sculpt!) vs a new digital sculpted model. There are cheerleaders for both styles, hand vs digital but like all art, beauty is in the eye of the beholder!

A few people missed my point and I feel that could be my fault. It’s not so much material or sculpts. All I was trying to cover was so so many people avoid gamesworkshop resin sculpts from previous bad experiences. I just want people to have an open mind about todays quality of material and sculpt. I own so so many old forgeworld kits and there are still more im hunting for. I’m a fan of the old style as much as the new style. But a lot of other people are not.

I get that Andy, I have models in all kinds of formats, metal, plastics, resins and while some folk will always prefer 1 style or material over another I think the single best decision from the Old World Team was to avoid Finecast altogether and stick to metal, plastic and forgeworld resin, just wish they'd do the same for the MESBG range. Lovely paint job by the way :-) @@MediocreHobbies

Fail cast was a complete bomb - both in terms of production method and quality control. GW customer service was horrible, and I ended up with several unusable models. Basically, wasted money. As for myself, I've moved on and purchased my own 3D printer with print results approaching mold-prouced resin models. I appreciate the review and your excellent paint job.
