Did you notice at 16:42 he says Jerry is deceased? I have seen con artists like this before, I have a friend who's cousin was a tweaker and broke into his grandmothers house the day after she died while the family was making funeral arrangements at the funeral home, went through her stuff and found the title to her car among her important documents, forged her signature as the seller and signed his as the buyer and then stole the car. Luckily the family noticed it when they came by the house that evening and was able to report it stolen. Police caught him driving it two days later. He claimed that she gave it to him before she died, but in reality she was suffering from dementia and her son had power of attorney over her and her estate so they were able to get the car back.

@@richardkehrli2400 Yes. Standard OP in VA...Like he said, you have to be able to get where you are going to title the car...Ex: Bought a car in VA Beach years ago, and lived in Richmond @ the time. They signed it over( After I paid of course), and I titled it when I got home. The missing "key", here is the BILL OF SALE; The document that shows who he bought the car from, and how much $ was payed (for tax purposes). Your comment confuses me, because NO STATE can tell you when you can (or can't) transfer your legally owned property...? Like, what happens when someone buys a car in a different state, and moves to your state before getting their car registered...? I'll be dammed if I'm driving all the way back (twice), because a notary didn't put their "seal", on MY property...Legally (In all states), the bill of sale is all that is lawfully required. With it, and the signed title, proof of ownership has been satisfied...In VA, a clear title is proof of ownership...And, I would NEVER leave it in the glove box! Someone can steal the car, then, legally register it in their name...It becomes their car....

Amazing the things some folks try to pull - and how they will lie right to your face. This is why you always do two things; 1- make sure you have the seller sign the title at the DMV or in front of a Notary who also notarizes the bill of sale (and do NOT keep title in car!), and 2 - as some folks are finding out now (Aug. 2023) make sure your current address is on your photo ID just in case something happens in your neighborhood and you need to access your home to get essentials out (or pick through the rubble left). Great job there, Jeff, going with your gut and following the law. Hope the owner (who is NOT dead) was glad to get his Flex back!

It quite interesting because I grew up elsewhere and the registration can't be left open the seller is responsible for posting off the registration so its their responsibility until the transfer is registered. Not saying people don't trust the buyer to post but they shouldn't. Though registration isn't proof of ownership but there's no legal form for ownership. And registration is what is used.

Learned this lesson when I sold a business vehicle and didn't 1-ask to see the "buyers" drivers license and 2- didn't personally fill that info in on the title under buyers info and have him sign it. Got a ticket 2 weeks later for having it sitting in a Park and Ride lot with a for sale sign on it. Douche was trying to flip it without paying the sales tax. After paying for the ticket and going to court to show proof that I had sold it, I got my money back for the ticket in 2 weeks. Ever since I make sure titles are signed and filled out completely.

Yes, that’s something I see regularly happening in the US and it boggles my mind. I’m in Canada and EVERY time a vehicle is sold, we BOTH go to the DMV to have the ownership/registration (what you call “title” in the US) changed to the new owner. I would NOT allow the vehicle to leave me until the new owner has license plates AND insurance on it - otherwise any and all damage & problems get laid on me. It’s super weird how the US has so many different rules & regulations that are handled in a very standard format the world over. We also do “plate to owner” in most provinces, so we REMOVE our plates immediately on sale so it actually can’t be driven anywhere until new plates are put on it. Good practices for sure. Don’t sign the title over to anyone - go with them to the DMV and don’t hand them the keys until they have a freshly printed title/ownership. Period. 😜🤠👍🏼☮️

BILL OF SALE!!! I kept shouting that to the guy that was trying to pickup the car... If he had in fact purchased the car, there should have been a bill of sale, even if it was just a hand written document... Because the last time I ever SOLD a car, I made sure I had paper work showing I was no longer the owner in case the actual owner did something with the car, didn't want it coming back to me. So there should have been a bill of sale. Great job!

If the title is filled out completely and correctly a bill of sale is not necessary. Typically a bill of sale comes in if the title has a lien and it needs to be cleared for the bank to release the title. The owner gives a bill of sale so the buyer has proof the vehicle has been purchased and for how much.

In most states, (I'm a retired sales tax auditor), falsifying the sales price between a buyer and seller is a Felony. Not that anyone would prosecute it as such (at least in Idaho), but it's always wise to have a complete Bill of Sale in addition to the signed Title. If the sales price is deemed to be "too good to be true," the state usually investigated and assessed tax at the Fair Market Value.

@@88KeysIdaho I my case, the sales price was fair. I had a car with a damaged engine and therefore the vehicle was worth just $$$. The guy buying it was a mechanic that wanted to flip it. This is why I like my state, tags do not transfer with the vehicle so if I sell my car to someone, once I sign the title as the seller the tags stay with me and get turned into the DMV where it's noted that the car has been sold and no longer of my ownership. Years ago I sold an old 80s caprice to someone and 6 months later the local PD calls me saying they towed my caprice from the side of the highway with no tags and impounded it for being abandoned and explained when they ran the VIN# it came up as titled to me. I told them that I sold it 6 months prior and it had no tags because I already turned them in. They tried to tell me since it was still titled in my name I owed them $2800 in impound fees, I told them I had proof via sale agreement receipt and gave them the name and phone number of the buyer, either they could take it up with him or auction it off ass it was no longer my problem. Dude called me 3 days later wanting to know if I could apply for a duplicate title because he "lost it, that's why he never got it transferred to his name" I told him best of luck, not my problem after 6 months.

Kudos to you and your professionalism!!! Your business is one of law and you can’t be ruled by emotions. My goodness, who knows how long the owner has been trying to figure out who on God’s earth will he get his really nice car back!! The dob stories are just endless. Wonderful wonderful you were guided by law and very clear guidelines in you line of work. If that was me, I would be forever grateful to you for sticking to what you knew was right!!👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽🤩🤩🤩

I could see this tow was going to be trouble from the start. A good idea is not to leave your car title in the glove box. Nice job following the law and not believing the BS story.

I'm curious if after you found that out if the other guy or woman came back to try to get it or stuff out of it?

I love this video!!! Jeff you did a great job, the stories people come up with. What does moving to a different state have to do with you signing the title, who in their right mind would not sign a title if you bought it from someone (someone trying to steal it) thats who. And you know that dude and girl are togther they just thought that dude would be able to manipulate Jeff into giving him the car easier than giving it to her. I just wish I knew if the real owner came and got the car or what!!!!!!❤❤❤❤❤
