As a US soldier, I was tough to solve problems first and worry about who gets blamed later, if you happen to survive and all. My first thought here was abandon a portion of the vehicles, pool the remaining gas and send someone back with fuel later if you can, or at least get ahold of someon who could bring up supplies. I was light armored infantry field medic in a unit with al different vehicles, including scouts on snowmobiles :)
