this scene sold me on JoJos, because past all the great memes and jokes there's an honestly good story with stuff that really puts me on the edge of my seat. I didn't realize this until I watched the first episode with my father who grew up reading comics and watching movies with hero's like rocky, superman, and zorro who are paragons of ambition and justice. when we watched this scene together he was screaming at the tv "come on Jonathon get up and kick that basterds ass!" my dad really only ever watched one anime and that was dragon ball z when I was little but seeing him get so into this scene after only a single episode made me appreciate this show even more. I myself am a sucker for a good paragon which is why I think I'll always hold a place for part 1 in my heart.

Honestly people who say Part 1 is bad didn’t pay attention at all to Jonathan and Dio’s relationship, especially in scenes like this. It’s gotta be one of the most interesting and complex ones in the series. Really it was this scene that truly drew me into the story of phantom blood

The problem is, Phantom Blood is 30% stuff like this, and then 70% where Jonathan fights sub bosses we never heard of, that come out too quickly to get attached to them, making this part really weak in terms of character development You'd have Jonathan, Dio, Zeppeli, Speedwagon is a hit or miss since he's just a narrator, and that's it Compare this to any other part, and you'll quickly see the flaws Phantom Blood is not a bad part imo, just not up to the standards of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure

​@@dekumidoriya2928 in my opinion the phantom blood manga wasn't developed as well as I could have been, the manga fleshes the plot and characters out way more, it's still the weakest part due to arakis limited experience at the time and it being the first part testing the waters, but the manga really is so much better and a lot of people judge it as a part solely on the animation. Both are good but the manga is much better at giving a more complex story with more in depth characters. (Especially Speedwagon and Zeppeli who were noticeably very lacking in the anime)

@@saidi7975 But consistency doesn't automatically make something good, the Stand parts actually had what people loved the most about (that being how random stuff can become plot relevant during an arc, basically what people call the bizarre part of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure) Part 1 has a story as relevant as an NES video game like Castlevania or Super Mario Bros, it's just a compilation of boss fights, and i really felt that in the big middle of the part And it's not to say that boss fights compilation is bad, it's mainly how the story goes in Jojo, heck Stardust Crusaders is 99% of that, the difference i guess is that i felt that in part one more than in any other part When a new stand user came to fight the crew, i was always curious to know how it will go, when a new enemy came to fight Jonathan, i sighed, because it didn't felt relevant to the "Jojo standards" And it's not to say PB is garbage far from it, while i really dislike a big part of it, i also absolutely love some parts of it that i consider pure gold (Note that im talking about the anime from my first comment)

Dio is a very well written character, he had a horrific childhood at the hands of his father which made him bitter and heartless. In some ways you can understand his anger and why he does everything, but on the other hand you just can't sympathize with the guy cause his evil actions get worse and worse over time to where you just don't know whether to feel bad for him anymore or not. He's such a brilliantly written villain that I wish other movies and comics and mangas would look to this guy for inspiration
